Convenient to the Appalachian Trail and many favorite hiking trails (with waterfalls!) for all different skill levels. For shopping, fine dining, scenic drives or even gem mining, you are in the right spot. The owner can make recommendations or suggest an itinerary upon request. Gambling is available in Cherokee. Cashiers, Highlands, and Franklin are all within a short drive where great shopping, dining, arts/crafts, live music, and even summer theater can be found.
Our nicely appointed, comfortable home sleeps 4 adults comfortably in two private suites. Two full sized futons are also available in the loft. The well supplied kitchen, with wine refrigerator, accommodates any gourmet cook. Outdoor grilling with al fresco dining on the deck or screened porch makes every meal special. The interior 18 ft ceilings with exposed timbers and expansive glass doors and windows provide a tree-top mountain experience. Every interior direction brings the outdoors in with the beauty of the hardwoods and mountain laurels. Enjoy a Scandanavian wood burning stove as you relax in the living room. Kiln-dried, seasoned fire wood is provided. The downstairs suite has a wonderful gas fireplace wrapped in the native stone.
The property is located about 2 1/2 hours driving time from Atlanta and only about an hour from Asheville.

We are busy professionals in Atlanta, GA and love our get-a-way abutting the Nantahala Forest.
We purchased the Buck Creek property in 2001 when it was an elaborate "Swiss Family Robinson" campsite! The former owners had enjoyed it as such when their children were young. It also sported a small single-wide trailer and a large deck overlooking a beautiful, rushing creek. A few years later we traded the trailer for excavation work and constructed the home of our own design, doing much of the finish work inside ourselves. It was a labor of love and we've enjoyed sharing it with family and friends since our first Thanksgiving in 2003.
SUMMER: On our mountain it is always at least 10 degrees cooler than Atlanta and there's nothing like the screened porch and hot tub after a summer day hiking. There's a real, old fashioned swimming' hole just a little way up the private road with stone steps leading down to it.
AUTUMN: Of course, fall is the busy season as this is one of the top leaf looking areas in the country.
WINTER: If you're from an area where it never snows, you're in for a treat. Our private road is gravel and usually passable in all but the heaviest of storms. The State Road is also cleared of snow promptly and well-maintained.
My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our four day getaway at Buck Creek. It was all that was advertised and more. Carol was most helpful with getting us in at the last minute. The house is situated in the perfect spot along a small creek that gives a constant water flowing sound for supreme relaxation. You have porches, patios, and views that will keep you relaxed all day.
What a neat place. I hope to return soon.
Because I'd love to keep this property a secret, I almost hate to leave an honest review. We have had an amazing two weeks--a reprieve from hectic schedules and concrete. The photos do not do the home's decor and superior construction justice.The light and views are amazing. This property has the best appointed kitchen we've ever used in 7+ rentals in Highlands. The rushing creek is amazing for exploration and for sonic ambiance. We loved hot tub soaks--especially for our daughter with juvenile arthritis. Our pup loved spending her holiday with us, and we appreciated having a dog friendly rental that was really nice. We can't wait to return next summer! A few logistical notes: It's about a 20-25 minute drive to downtown Highlands which simply means we planned our outings carefully. The internet access is wonderful and fast, so we didn't miss having cable tv. Our kids watched dvds and I watched a couple of streaming films on Netflix. Bring a lightning cord or hd cord, and you can stream movies or series to the flat screen in the loft.
Beautiful area with plenty to see and do, very nice little town of Highlands, and yet not overly busy and crowded (as were Bar Harbor and Acadia when I visited Maine last year). The house is lovely in design and setting. It felt very much off the beaten path, but was not too isolated. The owners have thought of every creature comfort one could wish; they are also extremely helpful, as when I had to change my original reserved dates. I was with my teenage son looking for quiet and relaxation, but it would also be a great place for a couple or fun for a larger group of people.
We recently completed our fourth rental of this wonderful house. It is a lovely home which feels comfortable yet contemporary. It is always clean, well appointed, and ready for your visit. Any time we have encountered a problem, the owner has responded right away. On this visit the microwave oven stopped working. While we were at dinner the day we reported the problem to Carol, a new microwave oven appeared. Now that's service.
We look forward to using this property in the future. We've never been disappointed.
First of all, I should mention that Carol was incredibly accommodating before we even left home to head to Highlands. Severe winter weather was in the forecast, and I was monitoring the situation closely (not even knowing what, if any, sort of weather policy applied to my reservation). Before I even expressed any concern to Carol, she reached out to me and offered to let us move our dates if there was a danger of our trip being affected by the ice and snow. She was extremely flexible in letting us wait to make a "game time" decision on whether or not to delay our trip, since the property was available in the days following our stay. We did end up delaying our departure by a day and were glad we chose to do that.
The property itself was even better than the photos and description convey. It was just the right distance from town to feel very secluded, yet with everything still within a reasonable (and gorgeous) drive. The open layout of the home and the modern style and amenities made it very different than the kitschy, cookie-cutter cabins we've rented in other destinations. The creek and white water made for such a refreshing backdrop. We loved that there was no TV in the main living area. We enjoyed just relaxing and playing checkers in front of the wood-burning stove, a great feature.
As someone who likes to cook on vacation, one of the biggest perks was the fact that the kitchen was so well stocked. We liked not having to worry about buying things like salt and pepper or coffee filters. It's obvious that the owners use the property regularly, and renters benefit from that. There are books to read, games, movies, and an extensive CD collection. I mentioned to my husband that it felt more like house-sitting for a friend than renting a sterile, impersonal property.
I would highly recommend this property and will definitely stay here again on our next trip to Highlands.
The rushing water from Buck Creek will cause you to leave the windows open for the sound. House is literally in the woods above the creek. There is a ton to do in the outdoors. We hiked, climbed, rafted, played golf, shopped and then came back to relax in the hot tub. We walked up the road and discovered a swimming hole down in the creek.
Best of all, the temperature hovered around 75 with minimal humidity and went down to 60 at night. A little different than Louisiana.

Reservations during peak seasons (April - November) require a 7 day minimum stay. All other dates require a 3 night minimum stay.
A damage deposit of $250.00, plus 6.75% occupancy tax, and 50% of rental fee is due within one week of reservation confirmation. Remainder of rental due 30 days prior to arrival. Personal checks accepted.
