You will stay in Gozo which compared to Malta is more quiet, relaxed and laid back. Far away from mass tourism, but very lovely and not boring. The ferry to Malta is just some minutes away.
Ghajnsielem has a population of around 3,000 and is the first Gozitan village that will greet you as soon as you leave Mgarr Harbour towards the Gozitan heartland and while still aboard the ferry, you could not help but notice the welcoming landmarks of the harbour village of Ghajnsielem. Lourdes Chapel with its sharp steeple and underlying niche of Our Lady of Lourdes, Fort Chambray on the left-hand side dominating the high grounds and, on the distant background, the towering belfry of Ghajnsielem's Parish Church. All amenities are closed by like supermarkets, bars, seafront and award winning restaurants, playing field for the children where they can play and enjoy themselves. Just ten minutes away down to the Gozo Ferry Terminal you can find Tourist Information centre where you can book all trips to
Comino, Blue Lagoon and the Gozo Ferry. There will also be the bus stops to the capital, Victoria Centre & Citadel
and other interesting places in Gozo. Ghajnsielem is blessed with fantastic open spaces, five beautiful churches, the Apparition Monument, Red bay and local craftsmanship workshops. Ghajnsielem is also home of Gozo's favourite pasta dishes, ravioli, local pizza known as ftira, fresh fish, traditional bread and of course its mouthwatering pastries - a ritual souvenir for all our special guests!
We highly recommend this apartment. It is well-equipped and very convenient to the ferry, restaurants, grocery store and bus stop (a weekly pass for Gozo buses is such a bargain). Karen and Uwe are eager to ensure that your stay goes smoothly, and Jeanluke was so kind in getting us settled in and generally looking after us. The location is ideal for day trips all over Gozo and a comfortable place to come "home" to at the end of the day.
What a delightful place! Karen and Uwe (and their son, Jean-Luke) looked after us all really well in this gorgeous apartment, which is only a stone's throw from the main ferry at Mgarr (5 minute walk) and to the main centre of Ghajnsielem.
Gozo itself is beautiful, the buses are unbelievably good value (AND reliable!) and the weather is glorious! A sweet little pool is shared between the apartments, and everyone is very friendly and welcoming - the locals in the twon centre, too. Try the triple burger at the Clubhouse, if you dare!!
So, thanks again - the apartment was clean, contemporary and definitely the best located of all the apartments in the complex. We can't wait to be make our second visit to Gozo...
Angefangen vom Toaster, Kaffeemaschine, Backofen, Waschmaschine ist alles vorhanden was man täglich braucht.
Mgarr Harbour is the largest fishing village on Gozo. In addition to the ferry terminal, a yacht marina is also located in this town. Mġarr is overlooked by Fort Chambray, constructed in 1749 by the Knights of St. John. The Gleneagles bar, which stands next to the original jetty in the harbour, was constructed as a cabin for ferry passengers in 1732 and has a unique sloping roof. In this Harbour, there are good restaurants specializing in Maltese, Italian and Chinese food. The port is linked to Ċirkewwa on the main Maltese island by the Gozo Channel Company ferry service, which operates every 45 minutes during the day. In this ferry terminal, you will find a Tourist Information Centre where you can book your Trip to Comino and Blue Lagoon or maybe hier a small boat. Here also a bus Route connects Mġarr to Victoria, the main city on Gozo.
Gozo is the sister Island of Malta.
Gozo is an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is part of the Southern European country of Malta, after the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest island in the archipelago.
The village of Ghajnsielem has a Population of 3,000 People and is the first Gozitan village that will greet you äs soon äs you lease Mgarr Harbour towards the Gozitan heartland. As soon äs you enter Mgarr Harbour, weile still aboard the ferry, you could not help but nötice the welcoming landmarks of the harbour village of Ghajnsielem. There is also a lovely playing field where children can spend their free time.
The Azure Window + Fungus Rock, Dwejra, Gozo.
The Azure Window, a natural arch formed millions of years ago when a limestone cave collapsed, is one of the features of the island. It is situated in the inland sea, Dwejra bay. The shallow inland lagoon is linked to the sea via a 100 metre cave in the cliff. On calm days, small fishing boats carry visitors out to sea through a tunnel in order to see Fungus Rock and the Azure Window from the back of it.
The Citadel, Victoria, Gozo.
The Citadel, which lies in the heart of Victoria, Gozo ia a historic fortified city or castle. The Citadel is on Malta’s tentative list of future World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, who describe it as a small fortified town. Withing its walls lies a fine 17th centure baroque Cathedral designed by Lorenzo Gafa, the Maltese architect who also built the Cathedral of Mdina. An old prison is located within the citadel as are the Gozo Courts of Justice as well as the Cathedral Museum, the Gozo Museum of Archeology, the Folklore Museum, the Natural History Musuem and the Old Prison. A visit to the citadel is a must and the fatigue of going up the hill is fully rewarded. From the fortifications there is a superb view all around the horizon with vistas over the tiny fields cut by yellow stone walls, domes of village churches rising from the clusters of houses and the Gordan Lighthouse.
Ramla Bay, Gozo.
Ramla Bay is located at the bottom of a rich and fertile valley on the northern side of the island of Gozo. The village of Xaghra, located on one of the hills of Gozo, overlooks this valley. The Bay can also be reached from the village of Nadur. The beach is quite wide and sandy. It is a prticularly golden-reddish sand which makes this beach different from all other beaches in Gozo and Malta. Locals often refer to this beach as the ‘Ramla l-Hamra’ – The Red Sandy Beach. The area around the beach is quite interesting and provides some very rich historical treasures. Roman remains lie beneath the sand and the famous Calypso Cave overlooks the Western side of the beach. Calypso Cave is in fact a series of caves and according to some, these extend right down to the sea.
The Ggantija Temple, Xaghra, Gozo.
The oldest free standing structure in the world, Ggantija was built when the temple building Pharaohs were still barefooted nomads. This temple is oldest than the pyramids in Eygpt. It has been designated a UNESCO WORLD HERITAGE SITE. The legend holds that massive stones were placed by a race of giants. Certainly, the thought of creating a structure as complex as this way back in 3,500 BC certainly makes you scratch your head in wonder. The stones, some of which weigh over several tonnes, still stand firm today even though no mortar was used in the temple’s construction.
Calypso Cave, Xaghra, Gozo.
Overlooking the red sands of Ramla l-Hamra, there is a cave where Calypso kept Odysseus a “prisoner of love” within the cave for seven long years.
Comino and Blue Lagoon.
Comino is an island of only 3.5 square kilometers and is situated between the islands of Malta and Gozo. It is a paradise for snorkelers, divers, windsurfers and ramblers. Comino is car-free and apart from one hotel, is virtually uninhabited. The island’s main attraction is the Blue Lagoon. Comino is also worth a visit in winter and is ideal for walkers and photographers.
