And Casa Mar y Luna is quite simply the best, most spectacular villa available to rent in Southern Costa Rica… we call it Barefoot Elegance at its best.
Introducing Casa Mar y Luna
As seen in the LA Times, California Home and Design and Unique Homes magazines, Casa May y Luna is a rare, once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to stay in one of the most breathtaking homes on the Pacific Coast of Costa Rica.
Casa Mar y Luna was designed from the ground up to enable guests to enjoy and experience the stunning beauty of it surroundings in comfort and offers a multi-sensory experience for a memorable Costa Rican vacation. Its location is unmatched in the area: panoramic ocean and mountain views, private, but only two minutes from the Coastal Highway and less than five minutes to the nearest beach. The owner’s assistants are available to offer local travel advice and handle any concierge service you may require so that you can focus on your travel experience and enjoy the house.
Drawing on the original owner's travels to over 50 countries, the house incorporates unique design features in an elegant yet minimalistic approach we call Tropical Elegance. The house was designed to provide a luxurious and comfortable vacation experience. There are 4 bedrooms, 3 large and one smaller, each with its own distinct personality and view. With the open air living room as the focal point along with the adjacent wrap-around infinity pool, our guests often find it difficult to leave to go enjoy the beaches and the rain forests and their abundant activities. You can literally lounge from sunrise until a starry or moonlit night in the outdoor living area, family room, or any of the bedrooms and adjoining decks and never tire of the views and tranquility. You can see an amazing variety of birds, including toucans and parrots, monkeys, sloths and coatamundis in the surrounding trees and of course, enjoy the ocean view where you can see almost the entire southern Costa Rican coastline. And the fabled Costa Rican sunsets are indescribable.
Ideal for couples or families traveling together, the house sleeps between 7-10 people in 4 bedrooms (with 4 ensuite bathrooms). The pictures offer a glimpse of the aesthetic beauty that the area and the house itself offer for discerning travelers.
We especially take pride in our personalized, attentive service...we can help you craft a unique, memorable, and authentic travel experience making you feel like an 'insider' during your stay in beautiful Costa Rica.

We are an American corporate lawyer and Australian sailor/surfer/entrepreneur who moved to Costa Rica to run a solar power system design and installation business. We fell in love with Costa Rica over many years and the Costa Ballena and Casa Mar y Luna in particular on a trip in October 2011. We looked at many properties on that trip and as soon as we saw Casa Mar y Luna we knew we had found our place--nothing else compared. We're pretty sure you'll agree!
Susan Farmer or John roy purchased this house in 2011
Why Casa Mar y Luna? California Home + Design article 2007: A long exterior walkway, connecting the master bedroom and children’s rooms with the open-air living room, offers sweeping views and the exhilarating
sensation of walking on treetops. The open kitchen, which Torres calls “command central,” looks out onto the formal dining room, living room and family room, which seem to almost float over the ocean. An inviting infinity pool, its curves echoing the contours of
the shoreline below, is visible from all the common areas.'
Why Dominical? Frommer's 2008: 'With a stunning setting, and miles of nearly deserted beaches backed by rainforest covered mountains, Dominical and the coastline south of it are excellent places to find uncrowded stretches of sand, spectacular views, [and] remote jungle waterfalls….'
LA Times 2007. “You’re in Dominical, a tiny village nestled between the verdant rainforest and the Pacific on Costa Rica’s spectacular central coast. Minimally developed and staggeringly lush, Dominical is an unspoiled paradise, adopted home of surfers from all over the world, who come seeking epic barrels and a stress-free way of life.”
Dominical is the 'real Costa Rica'. Plain and simple. We loved the amazing combination of lush, magical rainforest with the drama and energy of the ocean. In fact, we have traveled all over Costa Rica and this area is environmentally and topographically special. Some people says its' 'Where the Mountains meet the Sea'. Others call it 'Big Sur (California) in the Tropics'. Whatever you call it, it is simply unparalled anywhere in the world. We also like the fact that the area is not built up and still naturally beautiful. At the same time, there is every activity, tour, and excursion imaginable. Whether you stay with us or with someone else, come to Dominical.
Our cook can prepare authentic Costa Rican meals or other delicious food if you don't feel like going out to one of the local restaurants. Our guests have commented that our local cooking was one of the highlights of their stay...a real opportunity to enjoy real, local food. Meanwhile, the caretakers are available to offer local travel advice and handle any concierge service you may require so that you can focus on your travel experience and enjoy the house.
Our objective is to guide you so that you travel like a local, experience the best of what our rich environment offers, and weave together a special story about your Dominical experience. Based on our extensive experience in Costa Rica and Dominical, we can customize every visit for your group. Whether you want to find the best surfing instructor, the best 'fine dining' or hole in the wall restaurant, or the 'can't miss' tour, we'll make it easy for you. A last minute couples massage? Done. Whipping up a Costa Rican style happy hour platter for the new friends you met on the beach? The point is we know the best places, the best services, and we provide you with authentic, warm Costa Rican hospitality to ensure you travel like an insider.
The possibilities are endless, but here are a few.
• In-villa massage. We have 2 or 3 favorite masseuses in the area who will come to the villa…enjoy a sunset massage right on the terrace while you listen to the birds and the waves in the background.
• Personalized or group yoga. There is arguably no better place to learn or improve yoga than in the midst of the rainforest or on an idyllic beach. We can arrange yoga instruction right in our villa…or you can join group classes nearby.
• Beach excursions to tranquil beaches. Karen can pack a lunch and a cooler full of drinks. There are countless out of the way beaches in the area, and we’ll point you in the right direction.
We stayed here 3 nights in March and had a wonderful time. The house is stunning and the views of the Pacific are amazing. Jose and Cecilia were very helpful during our stay. There is easy access to beaches and good restaurants in the towns of Dominical and Uvita. Beautiful waterfall to visit and swim in just 5 min from the house. The house had recently been repainted and refreshed after a prior review which only rated the area and property as 3 stars. We found the Dominical area to be lush, full of monkeys, toucans and sloths in the property's trees, plenty of things to do, including surfing, ziplining, canyoning outing, white water rafting and had a great time. We didn't encounter any crocodiles!!!!
This house must have been stunning in 2006 when it was built. However, I doubt a cent has been put into maintenance since. In the tropics that's a recipe for disaster. Everything is falling apart. Was actually depressing to witness as with a little upkeep every year this house could have been kept up to standard. In terms of the area. Don't expect to lounge on the beaches. They are rough with zero amenities and in Uvita there are signs everywhere warning tourists of crocodiles (and you have to pay to get onto a beach with no toilets or chairs....it's a national park).
I have been coming to visit Dominical and the Ballena Coast region for 10 years now and have stayed in quite a few homes in the area. My family and I stayed at Casa Mar y Luna for two weeks on our previous trip and enjoyed every minute of it! The house is modern and comfortable, offering some of the most incredible ocean/whitewater and sunset views in the country! Although the home is just a minute off the highway , it feels very private and you can't see or hear any neighbors below, behind or to the sides of the home. The rooms are very comfortable (4th bedroom is smaller, but nice) and the Master Suite with private balcony (the views get better as you go up) was a perfect spot for my wife and I to take refuge, while the kids played in the pool below. Most of our time was spent in the spacious, tropical outdoor patio area, swimming in the incredible infinity pool, taking in the majestic ocean views and enjoying the daily visits of monkeys and toucans in the lush stretch of jungle that comes up to the side of the patio. Jose and his wife Cecilia are very accommodating and helpful. Many of the other luxury homes I have stayed at in the past are very difficult to access (sometimes dangerous), as they are located 10-15 minutes off the highway on steep, bumpy 4x4 roads It was such a pleasure to finally stay in a home that has such easy access to beaches, surf and amenities of Dominical, yet enjoying an elevated, birds eye ocean views, privacy and cooler breezes that come with being situated up on the mountain. We will certainly be back to this home in the future!
We had a wonderful time at your place. Gorgeous sunsets, the howler monkeys, toucans, whiteface monkeys all showed up to entertain us. You have a special corner of the world there. There were 4 adults and 2 kids (5 & 7) who stayed for 8 nights.
Jose was a real sweetheart. We managed to communicate in our limited Spanish & his limited English.
However, there are some issues right from the start when we arrived. Not being able to jump in the pool upon arrival, which the kids were so looking forward to (it is a beautiful pool!) was a challenge. The caretaker told us to wait until the next day as he just chlorinated the pool. As we got to unpacking, we realized that we would have to find our own bedding. There was a sheet on each bed with decorative pillows but that was it. After a long 2 days of travel we had to make all of our own beds.
We managed to find enough bedding here and there in the house.
The towel supply was very limited. There were mostly bath mats that we used for pool towels.
The kitchen sink faucet, which we tried to tighten, needs to be fixed as it was almost to the point of falling apart every time we turned on the tap - which was often since there is no dishwasher. We did read in the description light duties for helping with dishes. This was never offered once we arrived.
Wine glasses are down to 3 red, 1 white. A nice home and especially those who enjoy wine would expect there to be wine glasses stocked.
The frying pans are worn through the surface and not healthy looking.
Even a few more plastic deck chairs would have been so useful after being in the pool. There was only 2 lounge chairs and one very old plastic white chair. We didn't want to sit on the couches and get them wet.
Jose had the air conditioning unit in the family room turned on along with the fans but it was so hot. Upon investigation, we realized he had the unit on, but the tube that needs to go outside the house was lying in the corner unattached, so it was blowing hot air. We really found it unbearably hot.
The rental agreement , as I understood it, would include light housekeeping. We did it ourselves, nobody showed up for that. Our 8 days of garbage stayed in the house and started to stink.
Lastly, as we returned from a trip from the beach, Jose & his kids(?) quickly jumped out of the pool & headed back home.
This doesn't mean for one instant that we did not enjoy ourselves. We just make the best of whatever situation we're in & have a good time.
Took the whole family of 5 to Domincalito last Thanksgiving and despite a unfortunate incident had a wonderful time. The house is well appointed, but the real show stealer is the outdoor living. The palapa provides wonderful outdoor living with amazing views and the infinity pool is stunning. The caretakers, Jose and Cecilia were incredibly hospitable and catered to our every need. Unfortunately, we got robbed while sleeping and they took computers, phones, cameras... completely cleaned us out. Costa Rica is an incredible laid back country, but don't let your guard down. We did and did not lock completely up at night and regret it. We will be back!
Many thanks to Jose and Cecilia for taking care of us during our stay. The house is truly amazing. We spent most of our time in the pool or under the palapa and watched the monkeys and the wildlife all around the house. Also very close to Dominical surf breaks. We look forward to the next trip down!
A wide variety of outdoor activities are located nearby including fantastic horse back trips to stunning waterfalls and beaches; canopy tours; whales and dolphin watching excursions; sportfishing; white water rafting; surfing; and canyon and waterfall climbing excursions.
