The 'Bamboo Hideaway' has an excellent ocean view. It is situated close to an old stand of large bamboo, hence the name. Entry and parking are private and at ground level.
This accommodation offers slate floors, granite counter tops, King bed, full bath, cooking facilities, refrigerator, and kitchen island. A large screened lanai encloses the dining and lounge area with a full 10ft.sliding glass door to the lanai and two very comfortable lounges. Free laundry facilities are available in the garage. Shopping is close as well as 12 min. to ocean snorkeling and kayaking. Coffee and macadamia farms to visit.
A short 10 min. drive will take you down to the beach, Capt. Cook monument & Place of Refuge. Great snorkeling and kayaking.
The accommodations are compact but well designed, very pleasant decor.
There are several very good restaurants and a grocery store within one mile drive.
This is a smoke free environment for your enjoyment. Sorry no pets.

We have stayed at House of Refuge many times, always in the upstairs unit. This was our first time staying in the downstairs unit, and we were wondering if it might feel a bit small. To our delight, it was not too small or crowded and worked great for us. Everything we needed was right there at our fingertips, and the view was still fantastic. We have rented exclusively from Nancy and Greg at House of Refuge for many years after exploring several other options on the Big Island. The location is perfect for privacy, peace and quiet, and convenience to the south Kona sights and beaches. Now we have experienced both the Bamboo Hideaway and the Captain's Suite, we have two good options for our visits. Your hosts are friendly, accommodating, reliable, and respectful of your privacy. This is one of those rare vacation rentals that you don't have to worry about - it's all good!
This was our second visit to the Bamboo Hideaway and the two of us found it just as comfortable as the first time. Captain Cook is a great location for anyone who wants to be out of the hubbub but still close enough to pop out for a meal or a movie. We cooked breakfast and dinner in the room most days and had a hard time prying ourselves off the lanai to go to the beach. The birds, geckos, rustling bamboo and, of course, the view are enough to keep you entranced for weeks. Though we only saw them briefly on each visit, Nancy and Greg are very nice and ready to help if you need anything. The highlights of our trip were sampling poke in many flavors, seeing lots of turtles and taking a tour to the top of Mauna Kea (with Mauna Kea Summit Adventures).
As others have said: everything as advertised and more ! The private, screened-in lanai overlooks the ocean for great sunsets; snorkeling gear/beach chairs/umbrellas/coolers all provided for free use; close to Captain Cook and great pizza/shopping; cooking facilities, microwave, refrigerator, coffeemaker, free laundry, cable TV and all kitchenware/spices/etc supplied;. But all of this misses the charm, the peaceful allure, the solitary restfulness of staying here, that wonderfully intimate lanai... My wife and I (both 55+) loved this, and will be back when we can.
This is a very nice, well kept, and well furnished rental. Nancy and Greg were pleasant and helpful. For the most part it is peaceful and quiet. We were somewhat surprised that this unit is below the other rental unit, for some reason we thought they were separate, therefore the extend of peace and quiet is dependent on whoever happens to be above you. Some issues with barking dogs, both the owners, and the neighbors. We didn't spend much time there except for meals and sleeping, and it was usually quiet during the night. There really isn't anywhere to go for morning or evening walks, unless you go uphill to the highway. Parking is tight. If you want a place to just laze around and relax, or if you are out and about all day, this is a great place.
The Bamboo Hideaway is hidden away on a hilltop with an unbelievable view which you can enjoy from the huge screened in lanai that has two comfy lounge chairs and a table and chairs to eat at! To sit out there with a morning cup of coffee or a glass of wine was absolutely what I envisioned when we booked this unit and we never got tired of it. Super clean with spacious bathroom, comfortable bed, bright and airy. Nancy was terrific at accommodating any issues we had. A great place to explore from and so great to come back after a day of exploring to this quiet and relaxing place!
My wife and I spent 4 wonderful nights at the Bamboo Bungalow. It was everything as advertised and more. All the beach gear was super...chairs, umbrella, snorkel, fins, cooler..and even home grown bananas if you wanted!! The best part of every day (morning, afternoon, or evening) was just relaxing on the beautiful large porch with a great view of the ocean. Location just super...down the hill from a local grocery store, nearby restaurants, and quick access either to Kona or towards the Volcano. We hope to return and highly recommend this as a place to stay.
