San Francisco House Rental Photos and Description

House; 2 Bedrooms (queen beds); Sofa Bed (queen), 2 Full Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

This spacious, 3-story, architect-designed and stylishly-furnished house is my private home when I'm not traveling. It sits high on the north slope of Potrero Hill, one of San Francisco's most appealing neighborhoods and a restaurant mecca. Just minutes from downtown San Francisco, it is the perfect short-term residence for vacationers or traveling professionals and executives.

My Potrero Hill House offers sweeping views of downtown San Francisco and the San Francisco Bay from the living room, kitchen, both bedrooms, and from the balconies off the living room & master bedroom (I was standing on the master bedroom balcony when I took the photo of the view of downtown). The large, open living room has a soaring cathedral ceiling with sunlight streaming through the two double French doors, and a huge skylight. The living room features a Steinway grand piano, a dramatic marble fireplace, an award-winning staircase, antique Japanese furniture, original art and sculpture, a high-end stereo sound system, a 46-inch HDTV, and BluRay DVD player.

The master bedroom suite, a private sanctuary that occupies the entire third floor, has a 'wall of windows' framing a magnificent view of downtown San Francisco and the Bay Bridge (see photo), a sitting area with its own fireplace, a 54-inch HDTV, antique Japanese tansu chests, a balcony, separate dressing room, Japanese-inspired bathroom, and a private redwood deck that floats among the bamboo and Japanese maples in the rear garden.

The second bedroom is smaller but equally stylish with a queen bed, a 42-inch HDTV, and its own large bathroom. There is also a leather couch in the living room which opens into a comfortable queen-size sofa bed.

All three TVs have Xfinity (Comcast) HD cable service with hundreds of channels and many free, on-demand movies. In addition, the TV in the master bedroom provides free access to Netflix. A guest computer with high-speed broadband Internet access is provided, and there is free high speed broadband WiFi throughout the house.

As you have probably already gathered, I am rather fond of my home, but my opinion is shared by others. Previous guests have said 'it is like staying in a miniature museum', 'an architectural gem!', 'one of the most beautiful houses I have ever seen', 'incredibly peaceful, a wonderful place to relax'. A real estate professional who stayed for two weeks said, in his review on one web site, 'I have rented many houses in various locations throughout the years. Bill's house was the best ever.' If you need more convincing, just read some of the more than 50 5-star reviews my house has received.

Of course I appreciate all the compliments, but the point is that my Potrero Hill House is more than just a place to store your suitcase and sleep while you are visiting San Francisco. It will be an intimate part of your experience. If you or a member of your family plays the piano, there is a Steinway grand in the living room. If you are a history buff or armchair explorer, you will find one of California's largest private collections of books on Alaska and Russian America. If you are more into literature, there is an extensive collection of books by and about Mark Twain. If you appreciate art, the walls are covered with original works by contemporary artists, none of whom are particularly famous -- yet -- but all of whom are extremely talented and, I am fortunate to say, personal friends of mine. Scattered throughout the house you will discover Eskimo and Native American art and artifacts, sculpture, antique Japanese tansu chests, Persian carpets, and many other treats.

Located high on the coveted north slope of Potrero Hill, my house offers incredible views of San Francisco's famous skyline and is just minutes from the financial district, Moscone Center, Union Square and the SF Giants' ballpark. You can reach any other part of the City (Fisherman's Wharf, Golden Gate Park, the Golden Gate Bridge, etc.) in 20 minutes or less. San Francisco Airport is 15 minutes away, Oakland and Berkeley are 30 minutes away, Stanford University and Silicon Valley are 30-45 minutes away, Sausalito, Tiburon, and Mill Valley are 30 minutes away. Napa Valley and the wine country are just an hour away, Carmel and Monterey are 2 hours away, Lake Tahoe and Yosemite National Park are 4 hours away.

Potrero Hill is justly famous for having the sunniest and warmest weather in San Francisco. Fortunately, the hills to the west usually protect us from the chilly evening fog that typically covers most of the rest of San Francisco. This safe, quiet, upscale neighborhood is a true delight. Several of San Francisco's best restaurants are within walking distance, including French, Italian, Chinese, Thai, Middle Eastern, and the much-loved Goat Hill Pizza, one of the best pizzeria's in town (all-you-can-eat on Mondays!). Farley's, whose motto is 'friends don't let friends drink Starbucks', is a classic 1950s coffee shop that draws customers from all over the city. If you like beer, the Anchor Steam Brewery tasting room is four blocks down the hill. And then there is Dogpatch, located on the east side of Potrero Hill and just a few blocks away. Home to working-class families for more than a century, Dogpatch, now the 'Dogpatch Historic District', has been discovered by young techies, artists, restauranteurs, and winemakers and is being transformed into one of San Francisco's trendiest new neighborhoods.

Finally, one of the best features of my neighborhood is that it is one of the very few places in San Francisco where there is never have a parking problem for you or your guests! Parking spaces abound and no permit is required. But if you prefer to use public transportation, there is a bus stop one block away.

To make certain that your stay is trouble-free, my house manager lives in a small cottage at the rear of the garden and is ready to assist you as necessary.

In my humble opinion, you will be hard pressed to find any other rental property in San Francisco as unique and wonderful as my Potrero Hill House -- and my low rental rates make it one of the best values in town! So, why stay in a pricey San Francisco hotel or sterile corporate apartment when my house offers twice as much for half the price? Why deal with an agent or property manager when you can deal directly with the owner? My Potrero Hill House is truly one of the best accommodation values in San Francisco!

My rates include all taxes, so when you compare my rates with a hotel, don't forget to add to the rate quoted by the hotel both the 14% San Francisco hotel tax and the 8.5% sales tax. Many San Francisco visitors are shocked when their final hotel bill turns out to be 25% higher than they had anticipated.

PLEASE NOTE: Maximum occupancy is six persons. Minimum stay is three nights. Minimum age is eight years old. Please check my availability calendar before making an inquiry. Because I travel so much, email is my preferred method of contact.

About The Owner

I am an entrepreneur, venture capitalist and consultant who has spent more than 25 years in Silicon Valley. I have started several companies of my own and worked with dozens of other embryonic technology ventures providing concept validation, strategic analysis and planning, interim management, mentoring, and investment capital. In a moment of whimsy or insanity (the jury is still out), two friends and I recently put together a group of investors to buy a ruined 17th mill on the Tiber River about an hour and a half from Rome, Italy.

Guestbook comments from the owner

***** Excellent!

Bill: It was a good stay over at your place. It was a comfortable, great priced accommodation where you can really relax, and there was ample room to move around and enjoy. We loved the fireplace and all the windows and use of wood. The kitchen was great. All your books and art give the house a unique, personal feel. You had everything an out-of-town tourist needs!

Just as spectacular as the pictures make it look

  • 5 of 5

We were married in Muir Woods on this trip and spent half the time on a "mini-honeymoon" here. We were originally looking to stay in Marina, Pacific Heights, etc., but saw this and decided to try off the beaten tourist path instead. This was indeed a memorable place. The views are spectacular (being high on a hill), the house is spacious and very elegant, and it really makes you feel like you're living in the city rather than just being a tourist. I've stayed at many good VRBO properties but this one is at the top.

A Whole Foods is conveniently located nearby. We had a car but had no trouble parking the whole time. The neighborhood is very quiet and friendly, with a lot of small restaurants and cafes nearby. It's definitely worth checking out this part of the city!

Great location

  • 5 of 5

Four of us were visitors for several days. It was great to be in the Potrero Hill area. We used small markets and explored the neighborhood restaurants. Each of the restaurants was excellent and reasonably priced. The house is quite roomy and comfortable for two couples. We were blessed with wonderful weather and enjoyed the deck for a glass of wine and a snack in late afternoon. The decor is amazing. We would return.

Owner's Response: Many thanks, Joe. One of the things I myself like most about my house is its great location. I love living in a quiet residential neighborhood with plenty of parking and a dozen good restaurants within walking distance and yet still be just 10 minutes from the center of one of the world's most amazing cities and less than 30 minutes from an international airport. -- Bill

An oasis in the city, great location & amenities

  • 5 of 5

The Potrero Hill House is superb and lives up to the expectation of the pictures. It's in a quiet spot, with a village centre nearby of independent restaurants and coffee shops. Parking is no issue, and of course we had to go to a ball game which is close by.

The house is close to the city but a haven away from it. We loved the local restaurants, the views of the city and the house itself -- the open, quiet space, and the décor. This was one of the highlights of our trip, we should have stayed longer.

It was ok not to stay in the centre of town. In some ways, it's more authentic to stay in a suburb which is 10 minutes on the bus to downtown, and 30 minutes to the waterfront.

We recommend that you use the local restaurants in walking distance. Buses are great although I drove around easily enough and parking was ok. The Anchor Steam Brewery and a Whole Foods store are nearby.

San Francisco with a twist

  • 5 of 5

This was our first time staying in this part of he city. Needed to reset my expectations. Found what we needed and used Uber to get elsewhere. The residence is very comfortable and spacious. I am an accomplished cook and found the kitchen well equipped. I could have used sharper knives, though. I was able to whip up a dinner of cream of green peas soup, tossed salad with citrus vinaigrette, chicken and rice, strawberries with lemon syrup and wedges of cheddar and triple creme and dried figs. As you can see, I managed!!! Lots of storage space available.

We most liked the very comfortable feeling of home, watching sunsets from the living room, with friends and champagne, listening to some of the owner's CD selections – and the easy parking was a blessing.

We weren't as close to Union Square as we would have liked. However, with more time to explore the area, I am sure that the gems of the Potrero Hill would be revealed.

Lovely Potrero Hill house

  • 5 of 5

Not your typical rental. Personality and carefully considered design. It felt like our home away from home. Great view at night from the bedroom. The entire experience has been well thought out.

Potrero Hill is one of SF's best kept secrets. Don't bother driving (and dealing with parking) anywhere else for dinner (other than maybe Dogpatch and the eastern Mission). Uber really IS terrific in SF. Tell your children to move to SF and have grandchildren.

Potrero Hill House

  • 5 of 5

The home reflects an eclectic mix of the owners travels, interests and style. We were very comfortable in every way. The view was spectacular and the furnishings/books/art were fascinating. I am fussy about beds and these were comfortable. There are too many things to see and do in San Francisco but Potrero Hill is my new favorite neighborhood because it is quiet and so easy to get to everything from there. Also parking is included with the property so no worry about circling the block endlessly. The only thing we regretted was that we were part of a wedding party so did not get enough time to really enjoy cooking and
