John Gilhart purchased this house in 2005
We visited Duck Key on family vacations and fell in love with the island, the people and the surrounding Florida Keys. In the summer of 2005 we hired a real estate agent to look for a second home. We wanted to make sure that we looked throughout the Keys before we made a final decision on location. We started in Key Largo which is at the top of the Florida Keys and visited each island all the way down to Key West. We found that there are several beautiful areas but none that had the consistent quality of houses, beautiful flow-through clean canals, privacy and exclusivity like Duck Key island. We chose this house because of its old Florida charm and the proximity to the main island inlet to the ocean. We have enjoyed this beautiful tropical paradise since then and enjoy sharing it with our guests.
This house has a 350 SF elevated porch facing the water. There is a swing, lounge chairs with foot rests and two tables for outside dining that seat four people each. You can watch the fish and wildlife from the porch while relaxing in a lounge chair or the swing. Most of the time the water is so clear that you can see stingrays, tarpon, snook, nurse sharks or the occasional turtle or manatee. You can also sit around the fire pit by the dock at night and roast hot dogs and make 'smors' while watching the fish around the underwater lights.
We come down to the Keys several times a year, and usually stay in the Islamorada area. This year we wanted to venture closer to marathon and chose this Duck Key home. Since we always come down with an 18ft boat, dockage and trailer parking is always a huge concern. This house has ample trailer parking, and the front yard has plenty of space to maneuver the trailer which was very comforting. Boat dockage was also very easy, even with the owners boat there on a lift, so dockage was not a concern, however a larger boat might need to use the local marina. The downstairs commercial ice maker and chest freezer were a very welcome addition, and we used them extensively.
We are quite use to rentals as we come to the Keys every year; our first impression of this house compared to others we have rented was a complete surprise. It was obvious to us that this house had recently been re-modeled and gave the appearance of a brand new house, and on top of that easily one of the best equipped homes we've enjoyed. From the appliances, linens, and overall appearance, we couldn't have been happier. Even the neighbors were friendly and helpful with local advice. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this rental to friends, and hope to return again.
Beautiful home, Fantastic location. Well furnished and equipped. I only wish the ice maker was working. We fished and dove for lobster 2-3 times daily for 14 days. 4-6 bags of ice daily from the ship store added up quickly.
I recently spent two nights at this house in Duck Key. I had two friends visiting from out of the country and we planned a weekend excursion in the Keys. I cannot say enough positive things about both the house and the owner. The house was perfect-beautiful, spotless, quiet-and my friends commented that the weekend in the Keys was the highlight of their month-long vacation to America! The house was fully equipped with everything from dishes to board games and books. We ended up spending more time at the house than we intended! The owner, John, was exceptional as well. He went above and beyond to make sure our stay was as pleasant as possible, even giving us directions to the nearest store and recommendations on food delivery service! I definitely plan on returning in the near future for a girls weekend, and would highly recommend this house to anyone looking to spend some time in the beautiful Florida Keys. A piece of advice to future renters: spend some time on the outside deck, especially of the evening. The canal lights offer a spectacular view.
We spent a very peaceful and relaxing long weekend in this wonderful home. Excellent accommodations! Clean, beautifully decorated. Fully equipped kitchen, large dining and living space. The dock area was great. We were able to lay out on the floats and we got some kayaking in too. Would definitely stay here again!
Another wonderful year at Duck Key, Fla!! This completes four years and each year it gets better!! Great location, beautiful house and a great variety of eating places in the area. Sunsets are breath taking, fishing is plentiful, something for everyone!!!
The house in Duck Key suited our needs perfectly. It was well equipped, had a nice view of the canal and a super outside deck which is where we spent alot of our time there! The use of kayaks was a nice touch! It was quite quiet but handy for visiting other sites in the keys. Not many restaurants there but close enough to Marathon.
Tennis at nearby Hawks Cay Resort was nice too.
John the owner was very good with communication by email.
There is a new Aquarium open to the public in Marathon near Vaca Cut
