About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Come stay in our charming, warm and cozy, place surrounded by whispering pines amidst a Hapu'u Fern & Ohia Rain forest. The entire house has just been through a major remodel and everything is sparkling fresh and new. This is the BEST place to stay if you want to visit Hawaii National Park and the most active volcano in the world, because the entrance to our neighborhood is actually within the park itself.

You couldn't be any closer! But more importantly the weather is wonderful. The village is always dark, damp, and dreary but we are just over the crest of Kilauea and it is usually sunny with light occasional mists. Perfect!

Golf, hike, bike and explore! Located in the Volcano Golf & Country Club, the Golf Course the oldest course in Hawaii, I think it's the most unique and beautiful. Where else can you see Nene Geese on the 4th hole?

There is so much to do, you will want to stay at least a few days. Go swim with the turtles at Punaluu Beach just a few miles down Hwy 11. You may want to make this home base for visiting the rest of the island. Kona is 98 miles away, Hilo 28.

Treasure the peace and quiet you will experience being in Volcano. It is a perfect retreat for a writer. Get away from it all! Come visit Hale Kolokea!

About Julie or Steve

We live in Kona on the Big Island but love to get away to the Volcano area where it is cool in the Summer and crisp in the Fall and Winter. There is nothing like seeing the snow on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa from the upcountry of Volcano. In the summer, the cool air and whispering pines make us feel like we have traveled to some distant enchanted forest. We LOVE IT!

Julie or Steve purchased this house in 2007

Why Julie or Steve chose Volcano

We bought in this location because it is close to home, but a world away. It allows us to get away and forget the hectic pace of everyday life. Volcano is an extra special spot on this planet and once you come and stay a few days, you'll know what I mean.

What makes this house unique

This property is so close to Hawaii Volcano National Park, you can walk instead of drive. I like to bicycle to the park. Golfing, Wine Tasting at Volcano Winery, snorkeling with turtles at Punaluu, you get it all here. My favorite hike is to Mauna Ulu where you are standing on top of a volcano, smack dab between 2 active volcanoes-Pu'u Oo vent and Halema'uma'u.

Totally Unacceptable and Dirty for the Area!

  • 1 of 5

My family booked this property at the last minute. Wow, to bad only hindsight is 20/20. You need much less than 20/20 vision to be able to stay in this house. Understanding that it had been vacant for a little while before we arrived, the property was not up to standards. The property needs much maintenance and upkeep. It was unhealthy as it was dirty, cobwebs, stinky, and covered in MOLD. We had booked this property for three nights and ended up leaving the next morning after we had arrived. All of our party slept on top of the beds because we were afraid to use them. All of the kitchen pots/pans, coffee maker, towels are old and dirty. The refrigerator was moldy and black! I think they shopped at a thrift store to stock this property. Once we contacted the owners and provided detailed photos, their solution was to send a cleaning person over to "wipe down the window sills". Please, take your time and look around for something better for your money. This home needs much work and attention. The decor is 1990 silk flower and worn furniture. You would do better staying at a Motel 6. Don't let is ruin your stay in the area as it did ours there are MUCH better places to choose from for the price.

Pleasant home for a family stay in volcano.

Verified Stay

Steve and Julie have a very comfortable and conveniently located home that allows you to fully experience the Hawaii Volcano National Park. Hilo is not too far away and shopping is not a problem. I would love to return to stay sometime in the future. Mahalo for opening up your beautiful home to us.

Loved this house!

  • 5 of 5

We shared this house with another couple and their children for a three-day weekend. Everything was exactly as the listing stated. The pictures online don't accurately show just how adorable this house is - you have to see it for yourself! The layout was great for us since the master bedroom w/bathroom was on the opposite side of the house from the other two bedrooms and bathroom so each family had its own space. The kitchen was large and well equipped for making family meals. Everything was clean and well-maintained. The house is located near the golf course and winery and is only a few minutes to the National Park. It was a great, quiet location which made for a very relaxing vacation. We love watching the lava in the crater late at night and watching the sunrise at the crater as well. There are also several neat hikes in the park that visitors should check out. Our favorite restaurant in Volcano is Thai Thai (try their lychee margarita!). The owners gave us a prompt response after our rental request and they left clear instructions for us at the house. Julie was very friendly and professional in her communications with me. I would definitely recommend this property to family and friends and we are hoping to stay there again as well. Our only recommendations would be to stock a little more toilet paper and the men in our party wouldn't mind having an outdoor grill. Thanks so much Julie and Steve for having us. We hope to be able to come back soon!

perfect for a family

  • 5 of 5

We 3 have stayed in this house for a month.

This house is very clean, cozy, quiet, private and comfortable in a peaceful neighborhood !!

It's perfect temperature in Summer and almost no gugs here.

I and my little son loved to take a walk in this friendly neighborhood as we see the Mauna loa and Nenes on the golf corse and to stay at the lovely yard with the bard's singing.

Its less than 5 minutes driving to Volcano national park, and also it's easy to get to both Hilo ( and Pahoa, Hamakua Corst etc...) and Punaluu ( and Naalehu, South point, South kona etc..).

Thank you very much for your great help, Julie.

We are looking forward to come back soon !

Very clean & comfortable, super helpful owner

  • 5 of 5

Julie's house in the Volcano area was excellent for us. We'd rent from her again the next time we're in that area. Here are some of the highlights:

1) Location is great. Maybe 2 miles to the National Park entrance, which makes getting in and out of the park a breeze. Nice, quiet neighborhood that's very relaxing after a long day of hiking. Property is fairly private and has lots of green space.

2) House was very CLEAN! Comfortable and has everything you need. Beds are comfortable, kitchen is well equipped with pots/pans/cooking oil/some spices/etc... Julie's maid does a good job cleaning because we found no issues and we tend to be very particular about wanting very clean space.

3) Julie was super easy to work with. Always responded quickly to emails and text messages. Very easy interaction, easy to get payment tied up, easy to communicate with. Made booking, checking-in, checking-out as simple as could be. This is less common than you'd think.

Comfortable, great home close to Volcano NP

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in this house. Julie was prompt in her responses as we planned our arrival and for any questions I had during the stay. There were all necessary instructions provided. It is well equipped and clean. The beds are comfortable. It is much bigger than in the pictures. It is close enough to the park (short drive). We really enjoyed staying here and would definitely come back.

We went with an infant (and Julie had let us know that the house is not particularly baby proof), and the furniture etc. in the house is not very baby friendly (has sharp edges and corners). So we had to be very cautious when DS was crawling around. One small per peeve was that there was no bath soap in the bathrooms.

We had some soap with us and enjoyed our stay nonetheless. No other issues. Everything else was perfect.
