Come stay in our charming, warm and cozy, place surrounded by whispering pines amidst a Hapu'u Fern & Ohia Rain forest. The entire house has just been through a major remodel and everything is sparkling fresh and new. This is the BEST place to stay if you want to visit Hawaii National Park and the most active volcano in the world, because the entrance to our neighborhood is actually within the park itself.
You couldn't be any closer! But more importantly the weather is wonderful. The village is always dark, damp, and dreary but we are just over the crest of Kilauea and it is usually sunny with light occasional mists. Perfect!
Golf, hike, bike and explore! Located in the Volcano Golf & Country Club, the Golf Course the oldest course in Hawaii, I think it's the most unique and beautiful. Where else can you see Nene Geese on the 4th hole?
There is so much to do, you will want to stay at least a few days. Go swim with the turtles at Punaluu Beach just a few miles down Hwy 11. You may want to make this home base for visiting the rest of the island. Kona is 98 miles away, Hilo 28.
Treasure the peace and quiet you will experience being in Volcano. It is a perfect retreat for a writer. Get away from it all! Come visit Hale Kolokea!

We live in Kona on the Big Island but love to get away to the Volcano area where it is cool in the Summer and crisp in the Fall and Winter. There is nothing like seeing the snow on Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa from the upcountry of Volcano. In the summer, the cool air and whispering pines make us feel like we have traveled to some distant enchanted forest. We LOVE IT!
Julie or Steve purchased this house in 2007
We bought in this location because it is close to home, but a world away. It allows us to get away and forget the hectic pace of everyday life. Volcano is an extra special spot on this planet and once you come and stay a few days, you'll know what I mean.
This property is so close to Hawaii Volcano National Park, you can walk instead of drive. I like to bicycle to the park. Golfing, Wine Tasting at Volcano Winery, snorkeling with turtles at Punaluu, you get it all here. My favorite hike is to Mauna Ulu where you are standing on top of a volcano, smack dab between 2 active volcanoes-Pu'u Oo vent and Halema'uma'u.
We 3 have stayed in this house for a month.
This house is very clean, cozy, quiet, private and comfortable in a peaceful neighborhood !!
It's perfect temperature in Summer and almost no gugs here.
I and my little son loved to take a walk in this friendly neighborhood as we see the Mauna loa and Nenes on the golf corse and to stay at the lovely yard with the bard's singing.
Its less than 5 minutes driving to Volcano national park, and also it's easy to get to both Hilo ( and Pahoa, Hamakua Corst etc...) and Punaluu ( and Naalehu, South point, South kona etc..).
Thank you very much for your great help, Julie.
We are looking forward to come back soon !
Julie's house in the Volcano area was excellent for us. We'd rent from her again the next time we're in that area. Here are some of the highlights:
1) Location is great. Maybe 2 miles to the National Park entrance, which makes getting in and out of the park a breeze. Nice, quiet neighborhood that's very relaxing after a long day of hiking. Property is fairly private and has lots of green space.
2) House was very CLEAN! Comfortable and has everything you need. Beds are comfortable, kitchen is well equipped with pots/pans/cooking oil/some spices/etc... Julie's maid does a good job cleaning because we found no issues and we tend to be very particular about wanting very clean space.
3) Julie was super easy to work with. Always responded quickly to emails and text messages. Very easy interaction, easy to get payment tied up, easy to communicate with. Made booking, checking-in, checking-out as simple as could be. This is less common than you'd think.
We really enjoyed our stay in this house. Julie was prompt in her responses as we planned our arrival and for any questions I had during the stay. There were all necessary instructions provided. It is well equipped and clean. The beds are comfortable. It is much bigger than in the pictures. It is close enough to the park (short drive). We really enjoyed staying here and would definitely come back.
We went with an infant (and Julie had let us know that the house is not particularly baby proof), and the furniture etc. in the house is not very baby friendly (has sharp edges and corners). So we had to be very cautious when DS was crawling around. One small per peeve was that there was no bath soap in the bathrooms.
We had some soap with us and enjoyed our stay nonetheless. No other issues. Everything else was perfect.
Staying at this house is a much better option than staying in Volcano Village. It is on the "Dry Side" of the area and much closer to the entrance to the park. (Your entrance fee for the park is good for 7 days so you can easily go in and out many times). The house itself is very comfortable and well equipped. The wood stove in the living room makes it very warm and cozy during the cool evenings. Julie was very helpful and accommodating.
We came and stayed for a week. Two grand parents, two parents and four children. Accommodations were good, clean & comfy. We even had space for the nine others of our family for two dinners. (They stayed in two adjacent homes in Volcano Village.) Yes, the Golf Course is nearby. Also Hwy11. One day we thought we could walk across to the Volcano National Park visitor center, but we only got as far as the Kilauea Military Camp - we had to ask for further transportation from the rest of our family from there to the park. We enjoyed the birds (chickens?) in the spacious yard, and the youngsters had fun with some games therein. One day we were challenged by the absence of cold tap water. Not resolved when we returned from a day tour. Called Steve for a fix and it was resolved the next day. Wrap around porch provided both leasure time relaxation and the setting for a 17 member clan photo op. Dense fog on Hwy11 a couple of nights. Home is in a good position for touring and relaxation.
We've stayed here several times now and it's always clean, comfortable and inviting upon our arrival. The layout is easy going and it feels like a home and not a hotel. It's on the "dry side" of the Volcano area near the golf course. Volcano Village is a short drive away and offers options for fuel, supplies and meals.
Visit an active Volcano within walking distance from the house! Halemaumau is 1.5 miles away and emitting huge ash plume steadily for 2 years!
