Germignaga: The Northern part of Germignaga is separated from Luino by the river Tresa. The administrative districts of Germignaga and Luino were joined in 1928. However, following strong protests by the „Germignaghese“ the fusion was reversed in 1947 and since then the town has had its own administration. Germignaga was first mentioned officially in the year 807 as „Germaniaca“ and in Mediaeval times it was for many years the administrative seat of the entire Tresa Valley. The original settlement was much deeper in the valley than it would appear nowadays. Over the centuries, the river continually transported stones and rubble to its mouth, thus greatly increasing the original area of the district. According to the history books, there was an important fortress on the location of the present-day cemetry. This was destroyed in the Battle of Germignaga and the ruins were used to build a dam along the Tresa. In 1397 the district became part of the township of Angera which tried to start iron production in „Zermignaga“. After centuries of agricultural activity, the population started the production of cloth in the middle of the 18th century. In the beginning, the cloth was woven from hanf but later silk took over. Due to the establishment of an important weaving factory in 1839, Germignaga became an industrial centre on the Eastern side of the lake. Due to the gradual closure of the factories in the last 50 years, the area has lost its former economic status and the main income nowadays comes from tourism.
