Stresa (approximately 5 100 inhabitants) was built in 998 for the first time in a document as "Strixsya" mentioned and derives its name from the Lombard word for stroke, because the place is located on a relatively narrow "land" along the lake. The now non-existent catchment on Cree divided Stresa in 2 parts, which in turn were named after the respective lords, namely 'Stresa Visconti' and 'Stresa Borromeo'. In the late 18th Century, the city became one of the most popular swimming and recreational destinations in Europe, which was easily accessible by the construction of the Simplon Pass by Napoleon and later the railway route from Western and Central Europe and from the south. The unique panoramic location on the south shore of Lake Maggiore with the stunning views over the Borromeo Gulf and its islands to the opposite shore was "A Farewell to Arms" described by Ernest Hemingway in part on its worldwide success and also for many other writers and painters this was quite special land source of inspiration. Even large policy took place in Stresa and so are actually almost each child the "Treaty of Stresa" a term in which signed measures to avert the looming German expansion and war policy in April 1935, the leaders of France, Britain and Italy. The originals can be seen rest today in the former summer palace of the Borromeo family on the Isola Bella; the historical location at which the contracts were once signed. Along the magnificent promenade still impress the gorgeous Art Nouveau hotels the viewer with the charm of the Belle Epoque. located in the vicinity of villas, such. as the Villa Pallavicino with a 160. 000 sqm large English-style park with a zoo and the Villa Bolongaro (later known as Villa Ducale), where in 1855 the philosopher Antonio Rosmini died. Pierre Antonio Bolongaro was incidentally also, who created the famous Margheritine (typical pastry of the place) in honor of the then Princess Margherita di Savoia - which was crowned the first queen of Italy. From Stresa you have many opportunities for recreation. A trip to the local mountain Mottarone (1 491 m.ü.d. M.) is actually a must: From the summit cross in nice weather you can enjoy the unique view of seven lakes to the glacier-covered Alpine peaks of the Valais and Ticino ! For avid golfers, several golf courses nearby, culture vultures are on the other hand should not be missed with many wonderful concerts the music weeks.
