Located on popular Wightman Lane, in the village area of Captiva, 'Rick's Retreat' is a ground level home originally built by Bette Davis and just steps to the beach! Freshly painted inside and out, this home is tastefully decorated in island and tropical decor. Exceptionally bright with all white-tiled floors--simple and clean with all modern amenities and all new appliances. 'Ricks' is not one of these palatial beach palaces with elevators, theaters, etc. More on the order of a deluxe cottage in a tropical setting, the way Captiva used to be! Included are 4 TVs, stereo, DVD, all linens, beach chairs, towels, kid toys, games, etc. Enjoy the sunny front deck with outside shower (showering under the stars at night is a real treat), or enjoy the private rear screened porch. Fully equipped kitchen, inside laundry, outside gas grill, three bedrooms plus enclosed den, all surrounded by lush vegetation and privacy and a short walk down a palm-shaded sandy lane to the beach.
Rick's Retreat's prime village location lets one enjoy as many or as few amenities as one desires! Park your car; you will not need it! The most beautiful beach is at one end of the lane, with excellent restaurants at the other end; what more could one want!
Some guest comments: 'My family and I had such a fantastic time in Captiva...Words cannot describe the beach there. I cried when it was time to come home. We had the best weather, great food and wonderful home to come back to at night. Thank you so much. We hope to get back down again...' and from another guest:'I just wanted to let you know what a great time my family had at your house. My husband and I both grew up in Florida and over the years have watched some of our favorite places disappear. So it was a real treat to be able to take our kids some place that reminded us of when we were little. Granted, Captiva has changed a lot, but your house and Wightman Lane felt like a time capsule. it's a special place. Thanks.'

An Island treasure!
This was our second visit to Rick's Retreat. Only a 2 minute walk to the beach, the cottage is in a quiet section of old town Captiva. One of it's best features is that it is not a giant condominium. Perfect for a couple or small family and it's dog friendly. The interior is immaculate, and three bedrooms provide plenty of room to spread out. The screened in back porch is ideal for morning coffee and catching up on email or reading the paper. Except for some trips to nearby Ding Darling and Sanibel, the Subaru stayed parked for most of our stay! Everything you need is just a short walk away! A relaxing time in an environment that's extremely difficult to find in Florida resort areas. We hope to return many times in the coming years. Thanks Rick!
Thanks for your glowing report. Welcome back, Jeff!
Clean, comfortable, bright, Great location.
Rick’s Retreat is the perfect home for 2 or 3 couples or a family. Three bedrooms, a tv room with sofa bed, 2 full bathrooms, serviceable kitchen and comfortable living and dining rooms. Beach supplies are a bit worn and there were no beach towels, but we left a few new things behind that I’m sure will be used.
What serves as a front door to a deck was either an add on or a side door. Would love to see it as it must have once been with landscaping! A patio door from the twin bedroom is no useable as is, but would be a great place for the occupants to have morning coffee if it was cleaned up.
The only downside to renting through a management company is the lack of cooking supplies, ie. salt, pepper, etc and a few cleaning supplies. However, the dish soap, dishwasher soap and laundry soap were appreciated. The maintenance of the property is impeccable and a service call about a burned out bulb on the deck was immediate. I’d stay there again, but the kids want a pool, so we’ll upsize next year!
Great location! House is very roomy and comfortable!
Rick’s Retreat was a very relaxing, roomy house. Great location in the village. House had everything you need for daily living and for the beach!
Thanks Christina. Please come back for a longer time.
Home away from Home
What a perfectly comfy --clean and ideal location for a wonderful vacation. Every night the sunset was the activity and every morning I walked to pick up the newspaper and go for a" Starbucks"----There were 3 locations for dining---the screened-in porch --the front Deck---the house [eating area]---I hope to return again to this lovely home.
Perfect Beach Abode
Rick's Retreat has all the amenities you would need for a great vacation. The house was great for our group of friends to have our own space and space for all of us to hang out. The retreat had good signage to explain the cable and internet(which was perfect). The location has to be the best on the island. Walking distance to the beach and all the local restaurants. Can't wait to come back next year.
A Great Find
When searching for a vacation rental on the gulf for a week long family reunion, we wanted something homey, something laid back and a little old fashioned, but with all the amenities. We aren't fans of apartment towers or cookie-cutter condos. When I saw this listing on VRBO, I knew I had found the place. The photos in the listing are current - right down to the bed linens and placemats on the table. What you see in the listing is exactly what you get.
Outside it is like I remember summer holidays on the beach in Florida. A large wooden deck type patio with a barbecue (gas), a table with umbrella, an outdoor shower and every form of beach equipment you might want - along with a cart to take it to the beach. Inside is cool, white tile, both bright and calming. The kitchen is very modern and well equipped. There is plenty of seating in the dining and living areas. AC is very efficient and quiet. The three bedrooms provide plenty of bed space - though, in my opinion, it would make sense to replace the double bed with a queen.
There is a den at the back, with an attached screen porch. This is a perfect retreat for reading or just relaxing - and we shared several meals cooked on the grill at the table on the patio, listening to an early evening rain. Two bathroom are very convenient - there is plenty of hot water. There are televisions in several rooms, but we never turned them on. The wireless network was used constantly - and we carried on a week long trivial pursuit tournament, with an interesting challenge, since it was a 1980s release, so every question was a history question!
Days at the beach were wonderful. We walked everywhere on Captiva, enjoying The Mucky Duck and
the Old Captiva Inn. It was a delight to discover that there is so much bird life in this area! And that there are still coquinas by the water's edge. One day, we drove to the Everglades, which was an easy drive for a great adventure.
It was vacation the way it used to be - and made possible by the comfort and ease of Rick's Retreat. Rick was very easy to deal with, very accommodating. Royal Shell, his agent in the area, made the payment and key pick up and return very simple. They give you a starter supply ofbath and kitchen and paper goods. I would definitely recommend stopping at a real supermarket, like Jerry's on Sanibel (which is close to the Royal Shell office on Sanibel, where you pick up your keys) BEFORE going on to Captiva.
Wonderful village location--200 steps to the beach, one block to shops, restaurants, galleries. Enjoy this great location--be it the most romantic beach or the excellent shops and restaurants, all within a two minute walk. Captiva and 'Rick's Retreat'--paradise on earth! Come enjoy!
