About Jack

We have been opening up our Cottage from time to time and have enjoyed meeting so many nice people. When we open up our Cottage, we want our visitors to have a unique and memorable experience. If you have a good experience with us, you'll come back and you will also tell your friends about us!

Jack purchased this cottage in 2007

Why Jack chose Alexandria

Alexandria is FULL of history and conveniently located to downtown Washington, DC. We like the 'neighborhood' feel of Alexandria and the beautiful architecture, along with the convenience of the nearby King Street Metro and Alexandria Union Station.

What makes this cottage unique

Staying at The Cottage vs. a Hotel room. We offer the following:

Prepare gourmet meals or a Thanksgiving feast. The Cottage is fully equipped with all you need to prepare meals for families with small children and people with special dietary needs. Vacationing on a Budget? Eating at home leaves more money for shopping and area attractions.

The Cottage allows you to relax in private (indoors or out). Enjoy the beautifully landscaped Patio with Weber Gas Grill.

No need to hang out the “ do not disturb ” sign. For a romantic getaway or a 'get away from it all.' YOU decide when you want to wake up.

Luxurious Extras

We supply shampoo, conditioner, cotton balls, Q-tips and so much more.

Separate Laundry Room where you can wash, dry and fold. We even supply the detergent and dryer sheets.

Walk to King Street Metro or stroll into Old Town, Alexandria

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Jack, Donna and I want to thank you for all the kindness and hospitality you showed us on our recent trip to Washington DC. Your cottage is a wonderful place to say and the best value we've found in temporary accommodations in the DC area...ever. We have traveled the US extensively throughout our careers and prefer vacation rentals to hotel accommodations. We've never experienced as warm, comfortable and well appointed space as your cottage. We actually looked forward to returning each night and preparing meals in the gourmet kitchen. The Alexandria location was convenient for travel up to DC and Maryland and down to Fairfax and Springfield for business meetings. BTW, Old town Alexandria is a great place for shopping and entertainment as well. We encourage visitors spend some time on King and Washington Streets to really get a feel for Alexandria. Be sure to visit the cool art shops at the Torpedo factory!

Thank you for everything! The cottage is so nice, we hope that it will be available for our next trip to the DC area.

Cozy, safe, and convenient!

  • 5 of 5

Jack's cottage was a great choice for a Washington sightseeing trip. Convenient walking access to the Metro. We routinely walked back "home" after 10 pm and always felt safe. Really nice Alexandria neighborhood with on-street parking. The cottage was a great alternative to a hotel. Jack is such a nice host. Would enjoy staying there again!

Owner's Response: THANK YOU! This really 'warms' my heart. There are times when I think to myself, how much longer do I want to do this? I put a LOT of effort into making the Cottage 'unique', warm, friendly, clean, safe and FUN! When I receive a note like this, it spurs me on and makes me forget a 'few' of the others, where I could have stood on my head and sang the 'Star Spangled Banner' and that would not have been good enough :) So....THANK YOU! We love our guests!

Love This Place

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to stay. Jack & Nyla are wonderful hosts and their cottage has everything I needed for a comfortable stay. I guess the greatest thing that can be said in a review is that I plan on staying there again in the not too distance future.

The Cottage Fit our Needs Perfectly!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I recently stayed at the Cottage while visiting our daughter who lives in a small apartment in Alexandria. We found the Cottage to be perfect for our needs. We loved being in a residential area. We even walked around there just to explore the neighborhood. Jack was an excellent host. He was available to answer our questions and provide for our needs. There was food such as English muffins, orange juice, yogurt, etc. provided when we arrived. There was coffee, creamer, sugar, in the kitchen. Jack left umbrellas outside the front door since it was rainy during our stay. I feel that the Cottage is truly a good value in that expensive area. We plan to stay there again in the future, possibly for a longer visit. Thanks, Jack!

Owner's Response: Wow! THANK YOU so much for your kind words. We try to please EVERYBODY. Some, we can stand on our heads and sing the 'Star Spangled Banner' and that would not be good enough. :) Glad we were able to accommodate you and your husband. As I mentioned to you, 'communication' is the key. Just let us know how we can help and we will do our best!

Great temporary work housing

  • 5 of 5

I took this place in the winter and spring of 2016 when I got a new job in the Alexandria area and needed temporary digs in the midweek every other week until I could find something more permanent. The arrangement Jack and I came up with worked out well: I would fill midweek calendar dates in his "slow" midwinter season in return for a rate that beat most local hotels (which have higher rates in midweek because of high business travel demand). This was for a sizable, quiet apartment with many amenities in a desirable, safe neighborhood, not simply a room. (If you're familiar with the New York suburbs, the neighborhood will recall Montclair or Glen Ridge, N.J.) Jack was very accommodating for my occasional needs, like help figuring out the cable TV remotes. I remember one time I called early in day (not for me, but for most people) and woke Jack out of bed; he was cheerful and accommodating as ever, if a bit bleary. I'd highly recommend this place for two people who will spend most of the waking day out and about seeing the sights; and it's probably best for people who don't have difficulty with stairs, since the flight between the kitchen area and sleeping area is rather steep, although the handrail is sturdy. Since it was winter, I never used the backyard patio but I can imagine that being a relaxing place for a summer drink or meal. Enjoy!

Not worth the money

  • 1 of 5

This place was a big disappointment. As a couple, we had to assemble the day bed into the king size bed, which then filled the room so we could hardly move around it. There were no end tables and lamps one expects next to a bed. There wasn't even a closet for hanging clothes, just a metal shelf and bar next to the day bed. the main room had a chest of drawers, but the top was cluttered with stuff so there was no place to put your things. Pillows filled the drawers. The kitchen is down a steep narrow flight of stairs, watch that you don't bump your head going down. The laundry is in another building, you have to go outside to get to it. The internet connection is very weak, we logged in but frequently lost connection. Jack may be nice, but this rental is not.

Owner's Response: We were very disappointed to receive such a negative review. We take each review seriously, and we try to learn from it to ensure that our guests have a wonderful stay at the Cottage. Firstly, our Cottage may not be for everyone. It is a small, clean, convenient, and affordable get-away. Of all the reviews we have received, this one does not compare to the MANY positive ones and the fun feedback we have received and—I am sure—will continue to receive. Our Cottage is fully detailed on the website, and if guests have special needs or requirements, we always encourage them to let us know. This way we can let prospective guests know if the Cottage is a perfect fit for their stay. Once in a while, we receive a guest that no matter what we do, it is not enough. This particular guest arrived three (3) hours before the scheduled check-in time, stating that they decided to leave their former destination earlier because of the rain and they had run out of things to do. Not only did she disrupt my cleaning staff, demanding that they move faster so she could check-in, she placed her luggage inside of the Cottage, and my staff had to find a place for it while cleaning. We are more than delighted to accommodate guests that arrive before check-in, with advanced notice, and with a pleasant attitude. We have had long-term guests staying with us from two weeks to over a month and have never received such a negative review as this one. This guest stayed at the Cottage for two (2) nights. She further went on to ask if my cleaning staff provided “turn-down” service. When one of my cleaning staff members repeated this to me, I thought it was a joke! While we offer a comfortable, pleasant, quiet, and clean environment in which we make every effort to pamper our guests, we cannot provide “turn-down” service each night. In closing, we regret that this particular guest was disappointed because our cleaning staff did not fully accommodate her needs by providing “turn-down” services, or offering the amenities to which she is accustomed to receiving while staying in a five (5) star hotel. The comment about the Wifi is totally false. Our WiFi is one of the STRONGEST in our areas. If you are seeking a ‘home away from away’ with a host who cares about ‘YOU’; provides a safe, clean, quiet and affordable environment, check us out. If you are expecting a 5-Star hotel with a Bellman; turn-down service; room service; and have a sour disposition, the Cottage is not for you.

Cottage best by car

  • 4 of 5

The owner, Jack, was so accommodating and willing to ensure our stay was pleasant. There is no longer a convenient grocery store and since we had no car, Jack took me the first evening to the Giant store (abut 2 miles distant) for necessities for breakfast, etc. The cottage is great for one, well suited for 2 but cramped for 3 or more. It is 2 levels so guests must be able to negotiate some steep steps. Guests either need a car or must be able and willing to walk. Old Town and the 2 metro stops are almost 1 mile. The neighborhood is quiet and safe but some sidewalks are uneven and may be problematic for walkers. Alexandria is a wonderfully historic place to visit. Don't miss the Washington Masonic Temple which is right by the King Street metro stop. We were so glad we took the time to visit it and it is not just for masons but has much history about Washington and fellow masons. The cottage is highly recommended for a single or a couple, particularly if they are traveling by car. Jack is a thoughtful and amiable host. We very much enjoyed our 2 week stay.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your response. As noted in our description, the Cottage is perfect for 2, but can house 4. If you are elderly and are not able to move freely, as some guests, indeed you might find the flight of stairs in the Cottage or any other place, a challenge. In the past we have hosted 2+ guests numerous times and it has worked for them. As always, when we receive an inquiry for more than 2 guests, we send them a layout of the Cottage and let them decide. Further, as far as the sidewalks being uneven? Hmmmm...we are in Old Town, Alexandria, which is historic. In our neighborhood, the sidewalks are very even. However, when you walk closer into Old Town, you are going to experience Old Wold Charm, which includes 'uneven sidewalks'. Not much I can or want to do about that, except enjoy the history that our town offers. Lastly, each individual is different. Visitors who like to walk and are in good health, will not question the beautiful walks one can take from the Cottage into town. Also, our 'new' Grocery Store will be completed within about 6 weeks. This grocery story has replaced the old one and we are very excited to welcome the new one, which again is within walking distance. As this guest mentioned, we are all about accommodating our guests, as we did for them. Took them to the grocery store; waited a little over an hour until they completed their shopping; and then returned them to the Cottage. This is what we do ... we go above an beyond the call of duty to make sure our guests are HAPPY!
