Privacy

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Jack, Donna and I want to thank you for all the kindness and hospitality you showed us on our recent trip to Washington DC. Your cottage is a wonderful place to say and the best value we've found in temporary accommodations in the DC area...ever. We have traveled the US extensively throughout our careers and prefer vacation rentals to hotel accommodations. We've never experienced as warm, comfortable and well appointed space as your cottage. We actually looked forward to returning each night and preparing meals in the gourmet kitchen. The Alexandria location was convenient for travel up to DC and Maryland and down to Fairfax and Springfield for business meetings. BTW, Old town Alexandria is a great place for shopping and entertainment as well. We encourage visitors spend some time on King and Washington Streets to really get a feel for Alexandria. Be sure to visit the cool art shops at the Torpedo factory!

Thank you for everything! The cottage is so nice, we hope that it will be available for our next trip to the DC area.

Sincerely,

Dale Dimmick

Perfect home away from home.

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was a great place to stay for our family vacation. The cottage is in a great neighborhood and is within walking distance of two metro stations. When we first arrived to the cottage there were groceries in the refrigerator, saving us a trip to the store on that first day. Jack then surprised us with homemade cookies a couple of days into our stay, which were so yummy!! We definitely recommend the cottage and will stay there again if we are in the area (and it's available).

Love This Place

  • 5 of 5

This is a great place to stay. Jack & Nyla are wonderful hosts and their cottage has everything I needed for a comfortable stay. I guess the greatest thing that can be said in a review is that I plan on staying there again in the not too distance future.

Owner's Response: Here's what is interesting about this review... The couple that stayed here used 'Anonymous' instead of their name. Why? Because their review is NOT accurate. The Cottage, while it is indeed small (true), but NEVER, EVER untidy. It was left in very bad shape by this couple ... EMPTY wine bottles were left everywhere, along with a few broken wine glasses. Additionally, they damaged a side wall by moving the bed (without care). Damage = wall gashes, which required fill-in and painting. The day of their departure, my house cleaner called me and the way she described the way they left the Cottage was in one word 'a disaster. Additionally, while they were here, I chatted with them from time to time and gave them suggestions for places to visit, since they were visiting from Quebec. We had cordial exchanges and I also asked them if they needed anything, etc. Response: Lovely place, we are very comfortable. So, to receive a review like this just baffles me. All I ask of each visitor is to be upfront with me, while they are visiting. If there is an issue, let us know and we will immediately address it We take great PRIDE in our Cottage and we are there to accommodate the needs of our visitors. If you are looking for the Taj Mahal ... this is not the place for you. Lastly, people are so quick to say negative things, but are not so quick to mention the extras we do for them, i.e., gave them a $25 Metro Fare Card to use, during their visit; bottle of wine and a dinner discount at one of the local restaurants. Oh well!

Nice place for 2... not more

  • 4 of 5

The place is lovely in general. Especially the kitchen which is very new, spacious and well equipped.

The upper level is tight on space and the stairs are a bit steep, but I was expecting that from the description and is fine for the price. What I would warn people about is the beds... the description and pictures are not clear. The 'king size trundle' is really 2 twin mattresses put together. And the 'bed #2. Sleeps 2 additional guests, very comfortably' is very deceiving since it's an inflatable air mattress on the kitchen floor.

For 2 people the 2 twins are comfortable enough but I wouldn't stay with more than 2. Otherwise, very nice, wifi worked well.

Owner's Response: Thanks for the review. Our space is exactly as described in our description. The steep steps? Our Cottage, along with the main house was built in 1937. Both have been completely renovated. The steps are part of the 'charm' of the Cottage and do not hinder ANYONE from enjoying the Cottage. Rails are in place to help going up and down the stairs, which leads to the kitchen area and full patio. The upstairs bed ... yes, it is indeed a daybed, as described. When two twin mattresses are placed together, you get a King bed. Second bed, when needed ... a VERY COMFORTABLE AERO INFLATABLE mattress (as stated in our description). Our description states: Perfect for 2... can sleep 4. Whenever, we have more than 2 guests, we respond with an email, fully describing our space, so there are no surprises, upon arrival. We did this for this particular guest and others. We aim to please and do not want ANYONE to be disappointed. Lastly, we offer a CLEAN/COMFORTABLE/CHARMING environment, with very affordable prices. We are not a modern day hotel. This is part of our home, which we try our BEST to provide a wonderful experience to ALL of our guests. From time to time, we offer homemade cookies; iced tea; or whatever we think would be a nice welcoming gift.

Cute Cottage

  • 4 of 5

Overall, our stay at Jack's cottage was fine. Jack was a superb host. He accommodated our early check in, which was an important issue for us because we were arriving at noon and we had wanted to rest up before heading out to the event that we were in town for that evening.

The cottage had everything we needed for our short two-day stay. It was a half hour walk to the center of Old Town, and is centrally located to all the tourist sights. Parking on the street is generally not a problem.

Logistically, the Cottage is perhaps more suited for a single person or young couple. It is more of a studio apartment similar to what you might find in New York City. As older adults, we found it a bit cramped in the main living/sleeping area particularly when the beds were pulled out. I'm skinny but my heavyset husband struggled to get around. The beds were also a bit quirky because they are actually one daybed and a single twin bed that you push together. It was comfortable enough but for older folks like us, it was a bit hard to get used to sleeping in a twin bed. I loved the setup of having the kitchen and eating area downstairs. It had everything we needed. And the balcony outside was lovely to sit in the evening and enjoy a glass of wine. But as I've mentioned, because we're in our 60s, the small steep stairway was hard on my knees and you really need to hold on to make sure you don't trip and fall.

Other than that, if you can look past sleeping on a twin bed and navigating the steep staircase, this would be the perfect spot for you. This is not a negative on the host because he was fantastic! Had I been younger (or single), I would stay here over and over again.

Owner's Response: Thank you for posting a positive review of your stay at the Cottage. As always, I go out of my way to be the perfect host, catering to the guests’ special needs whenever possible. For this particular reservation, I made special arrangements with the housekeeping staff to ensure that the Cottage would be pristinely cleaned and ready to accommodate the guests, who required an early check-in time. I am, however, concerned about the comments regarding the king size bed and stairway and would like to address these two issues. In order to maximize space, I chose a day bed that would provide king-size comfort for “heavyset” individuals, such as the husband of this guest. Because the Cottage is a split-level unit, there inevitably are about 10 steps from top to bottom. A hand rail is part of the safety requirements of this home (built in 1937) and the stairs, regardless of the number of steps, must have a hand rail. This home has been updated, but a lot of its charm remains. Finally, I am happy that the guest and her husband had a “fine” stay, and I sincerely hope that they will be repeat customers. The description and photographs of the Cottage posted on-line are accurate, and the unit, in my opinion and the opinions of others who found the facility enticing and charming, is well suited for two adults. Additionally, we state that the Cottage 'can' accommodate four (4), which it has MANY times. We would like ALL of our incoming guests to remember you will be staying in a Charming Cottage with a lot of amenities. If a guest requires 'special' arrangements because of WEIGHT or other issues, please let us know ahead of time and we will let you know, if the Cottage is right for you. We AIM TO PLEASE ALL OF OUR GUESTS and we TRY OUR BEST! Thank you for the opportunity to respond to this review.

We love the cottage!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage is in a wonderful, safe neighborhood. It is charming, cozy, well equipped, clean, has a beautiful quiet outdoor space and the hosts (and host dogs) are just fabulous! Perfect place to stay just outside of the hustle and bustle of the city, but just a short drive from everything you need.
