Guestbook comments from the owner

Truly a wonderful home away from home. We would come back. The grounds are beautiful as well as the views. And ohhhh so quiet. We truly understand why they call this the quiet side. We have stayed here on the island several times and wanted to share it with our kids and we would probably never stay anywhere but on the "Quiet Side" again.

A Modern Cottage on the Quiet Side

  • 4 of 5

Cove Cottage is a modern, 2-bedroom, 2-bath cottage with a fully equipped kitchen, dining area, pleasant living room with a vaulted ceiling, upstairs sitting room, large downstairs deck and an upstairs balcony. We found it a very relaxing place to recover from Acadia National Park hiking, and we found the owners (who built the cottage and live next door) very helpful whenever we needed it. The beds are good, the towels are fluffy, the yard is truly beautiful, and at night there is the quiet of forest and sea, rather than cars or trucks or partying bar-hoppers; what more do you need?

The stairway to the second level is rather steep, and there are steps between the parking area and the entrance to the cottage; so we would not recommend this place to those with physical challenges. Everybody else, however, will find it a refreshing change from the crowded tourist havens a few miles away. And if you long for somebody else to make breakfast for you, zip into nearby Southwest Harbor for the best popovers on Mt. Desert Island, at the non-profit Common Good Soup Kitchen, where locals and tourists contribute whatever they want, in return for those plump delicacies.

Property 203055

Stay: early Sept, 2016. Richard was very helpful with recommendations of places to visit, directions to the nearby sites, etc. Owners were next door, working on a newer property. Property very quiet, and definitely away from the noise of more "touristy" areas (such as Bar Harbor), while providing good access to Acadia, Ellsworth, Searsport, etc.. Nice stove, oven, full sized refrigerator, adequate supply of hot water for dishes, showering. Bed was comfortable, and extra blanket available if needed. T.V. had a large number of channels available, but cell phone coverage is spotty.Outdoor lighting is available, although it does attract bugs, at night. Property was adequately furnished for those without spinal/mobility issues (would not recommend for mobility impaired/small children, because stairs to 2nd floor are quite steep, lack risers, and treads are about 11"-12" inches apart, in height). Would recommend improved housekeeping , prior to arrival of paying guests. Specifically, the bath exhaust fan had not been cleaned in some time, which impacts on efficient removal of bath humidity. L.G. front loading washer in bathroom closet had standing water under gasket, and in rear drawer area (where fabric softener would be placed) and a terrible smell, which required cleaning prior to use, and propping open the door and drawer for many days, to remove the smell.Empty can of "Pam" non stick spray found in kitchen cabinet. Renter is asked to remove garbage and recyclables to an area in the garage (not for use by tenants). Renter is cautioned to remove shams from pillows, avoid washing bedspread and shams, as they are dry clean, only.Renter to strip bed, Renters with children are advised to have children eat only in the diningroom, at the table. Stand fan (needed because property does not have A.C.) "fins" had dust, indicating they had not been cleaned in some time.

Lighting is generally adequate, although L.E.D. lighting would be a significant improvement (the owner told us the property had been equipped with almost all L.E.D. bulbs, but there were only lower wattage C.F.L. bulbs, one of which was burned out, but left in the bathroom closet).

The renter should be prepared to arrive with D.E.E.T., as the garden area and the yard were full of biting bugs. Would recommend property for couples and families with older children. If you cook, contact the owners ahead of time to see what cookware/items are available, as grocery store selection nearby is sparse

Owner's Response: We are very sorry you thought that the housekeeping was not up to your standards. In the past, we have always had high marks for cleanliness as can be seen in our reviews. As you did not comment on the general overall cleanliness of the cottage, we can only assume it was acceptable and that the only problems were the washing machine, the dusty exhaust fan, the empty non-stick spray can, the burnt out light bulb left in the closet and dust on the standing fan. We apologize for the condition of the washing machine. Our housekeeper had just broken her leg and we had a new replacement that week who neglected to wipe out the machine and leave the door open to dry out the interior. This has now been taken care of as has the dust on both the fans. Thank you for making us aware of these issues. The stairs to the 2nd floor are farther apart than normal at 10 1/2”. They are difficult for anyone who has problems climbing. The access to the first floor bedroom and living area is normal. I’m sorry about the misunderstanding concerning the LED bulbs. I said I thought I had changed them over and it turns out I had only changed the bulbs in the kitchen to LED. We are not quite sure what you mean by contacting the owners beforehand to see what cookware/items are available. The kitchen is fully equipped for cooking and the area has fully stocked supermarkets (nearest is 4 miles away) and specialty food stores in Southwest Harbor for gourmet items (4 miles away). There are several organic farms, a fresh fish dealer, lobster pounds for fresh lobster and crab, and several famers’ markets for fresh foods nearby. There are bakeries in the area—one is only 2 miles from the house with fresh high quality goods and another, equally good, is 4 miles away in Southwest Harbor. There are also many locals who bake fresh goods and sell them at stands or from there homes. Perhaps if you return some time in the future, we can point out where all these are located for you so that your stay is more enjoyable. We are truly sorry you did not mention any of these things while you were here so we could have done our best to rectify them for you.

Excellent location, family friendly

  • 5 of 5

Cove Cottage was perfect for our family of four (two adults, two elem. age children). When we vacation, we prefer a quiet location, but one that is close enough to town for restaurants and activities. The cottage could not have been in a better location. We could easily access the main entrance to Acadia NP within 30 minutes and it was so nice to return to the "quietside" of the island after a day of hiking on the busier end of the island. As a side, one activity not to be missed, especially if you have young children is Diver Ed's Dive-In Theater. The entire family had a blast. The cottage was very clean and well-stocked with everything you need to cook. We even used the gas grill one night. The private cove with its cobblestone rocks and tidal pools provided hours of fun for our kids. The gardens around the property were spectacular and you can tell that Richard and Mary Ann, the owners, take great pride in their property. When we return to MDI, which hopefully will be soon, we will definitely stay at Cove Cottage again.

The view rom Cove Cottage was spectacular! The property was well equipped and charming as described. We had a large group, which occupied Cove Cottage and Cove House and we could not have asked for a better location.

One of the family members visits Acadia during the fall. In the height of the summer the park does get much more activity and visitors. This location was a welcome relief at the end of the day with all the crowds in the Park, Bar Harbor on the other side of the Island. Access to the beach was wonderful for an evening or morning stroll.

Southwest Harbor has everything you could want for an easy afternoon of shopping, lunch and dinner if you decide to avoid the crowds. Proximity to Bass Harbor Head Light, was a quick drive and the Seawall area was spectacular. This vacation destination was wonderful, I would highly recommend Cove Cottage for anyone that loves a peaceful, gorgeous setting!

Our annual girls hiking trip to us to Acadia National Park this year. Cove Cottage was the perfect place to stay for our week long adventure. It was close to the park entrances as well as an easy 30 minute drive to Bar Harbor.

The cottage itself met our needs perfectly and we enjoyed walking on the cove's beach each night. We captured some amazing sunset pictures from it's rocky shore.

After visiting Bar Harbor one day, we were especially thankful we had chosen to stay on the "quiet side" of the island.

We had come with a game plan of several hikes we wanted to do, but after meeting Richard one morning, we also added his suggestion of Flying Mountain to our list. It was an excellent recommendation.

The entire trip was a wonderful experience and Cove Cottage was a key part of that. Thank-you for a wonderful week!

This was our first time in Maine. We drove a grueling 12 hours with three kids of varying levels of complaints and conflicting schedules for bathroom breaks along the way.

The sight of Richard and Mary Anne's property was the perfect salve. The house was charming, clean, beautifully decorated and situated on a quiet beach full of birds (My ten year old took an incredible picture of a real, bald eagle in a nest by the beach), ocean life and front row seats to dazzling night skies. The best part, however was Richard and Mary Anne themselves. They were warm, funny and attentive to our every need. Maps of Acadia park, restaurant and grocery store recommendations etc. were within arms reach. Richard went so far as to include my kids in some real live house building. Richard is a master builder. Both homes on the property were built by Richard himself and beautifully decorated by Mary Anne. Easily accessible to the wonders of Acadia National Park, restaurants, grocery stores and charming little towns.

Bottom Line: Run, don't walk, to rent this place. But you better hustle, we are saving our pennies to get back there asap.
