'Our Big Island vacation was perfect! We want to thank you for your attention to detail prior to our arrival. Upon arrival, the property exceeded our high expectations. The home was perfect! Everything was very clean, the kitchen was well-equipped for cooking, and the bedrooms comfortably accommodated two couples. The location in North Kohala, with views of rolling pastures and sunsets over the ocean, was a perfect jumping off point for exploring the Big Island. It was also a short drive to our favorite beach. We look forward to our return and will recommend this vacation rental to everyone we know!'
'We had a wonderful stay at your house. Now we go back to your website to relive our vacation! It was perfect!'
'We had a great stay at your house--what a beautiful and well appointed home.'
'Your home is perfect. It connects with the outdoors so well. The sun setting in the front yard and the green of the hills and trees, everything.'
Hale Pueo Kea (House of the White Owl) is located just outside of Hawi, in the Big Island’s beautiful North Kohala District. Away from the crowds, but convenient to so many activities, it also offers refuge from the heat and humidity found at sea level.
The house is on 10 quiet wooded acres, with an orchard offering bananas, limes, oranges, grapefruit, papayas, and macadamia nuts. There are two bedrooms, one bath, a fully equipped kitchen, living room with fireplace, dining room, laundry, and a large lanai. Nearby towns of Kapa’au and Hawi have fine restaurants, art galleries, and shopping. The larger town of Waimea is 19 miles up the mountain, and is the home of the famous Parker Ranch.
The best beaches on the island are a 30 minute drive from the house. As you drive the undeveloped, rocky shoreline, watch for whales from November through April. The Big Island has fabulous hiking, horseback riding, archeological sites, and of course, Volcanoes National Park. The only problem is finding the time to fit it all in.
'We enjoyed relaxing, walking, the view, seeing Maui in the distance, the horses up close, the avocados, grapefruit, balmy breezes..'
'Thanks for sharing your delightful home with us in Hawaii. We truly relaxed..'

My Husband and I own and operate a Ranch a short distance from Hale Pueo Kea. We chose Kohala, where cows and horses are in heaven before they die. We raise animals on only grass and rain for a exclusive buyers club and we work to steward our land to serve our community.
Jileen Russell purchased this house in 2011
We purchased this home in 2011. We have always admired the smart design and sustaining features and the native plants in the garden. We are excited to share it with visitors and add our special highlights to your visit. We can offer recommendations for massage, yoga, Feldenkrais, Chinese medicine and local CSA farms that can provide you with fresh produce during your stay.
Morning coffee on the lanai with the birds.
Fresh fruit from the orchard including apple bananas, so delicious. Sandy beaches are 30 minutes away, yet there are amazing swim and snorkel spots much closer. Our evenings are cooler and we have fewer bugs as a result. The Kohala Mountain Road is one of the most beautiful scenic drives in this world. The Farmers Markets are delightful. Our small town is safe and welcoming and tourists have been known to go home to sell their homes and then move here.
Nice clean place. House was stocked with most of the condiments and spices you need which is nice. Haw'i is fun and the area feels like Hana (more rain forest and less lava desert)but much more accessible! Real Hawaii not sirens and traffic.
Property was exactly as advertised. Clean and nice amenities that made it special.
I shared the House of the White Owl with my 17 year old daughter, my husband and our best friend for a week and we all agreed there was no place we would rather have been. The house is cozy and comfy and has everything you need. The fresh fruit (papaya, mangoes, bananas) that awaited our arrival was fantastic! The mangoes were the best any of us had ever had. AND we learned that there are like 60 kinds of mangoes.... who knew?? The energy of the house and land is something special- at the House of the White Owl I felt both closer to the Earth, and closer to the sky..... The clicking geckos amused us all and we encountered no biting creatures of any type ;-) The closest town, Hawi, is great for its little coffee shop and Sushi Rock is top notch. The house is surrounded by rolling green hills, a 30 min drive from some of the most beautiful beaches in the world, and less than 2 hours drive from a rocky hike up the lunar landscape of Mauna Kea for those souls who prefer to toil on their vacations ;-) I am basically counting the days til I can return ;-)
Awesome retreat for husband and I to explore the big island. Unique design elements in the bathroom and kitchen including stainless steel and concrete. Thoughtful offerings such as beach equipment (my first time snorkeling!), fresh fruit, bath toiletries/soaps/shampoo, everything was very clean! My only wish is that we would have stayed longer! I might have complained about the lack of cable/TV but I have to admit it kept us from being homebodies and getting out making the most of our days. Breathtaking sunsets, very peaceful!
This property was exceptional and suited all the needs of my family ranging in age 80 down to 18 months old. The view was stunning and the Kohala mountain breezes and nightly rain showers a nice respite from the unusual heat in Kona and Hawi. The house was outfit with everything we possibly needed, and those items we didn't think we needed but were certainly glad to have. The spirit of Aloha certainly resides here and with the wonderful host Jileen who filled the home with fresh fruit, flowers, and little touches like lotion and soaps. The star gazing from the large patio is the best I've experienced, including from middle America farm country! We loved the separate living spaces (great for afternoon naps for young and old) and enjoyed cooking breakfast or dinners in the well stocked kitchen before or after we headed out to explore for the day. Although the home is further away from the Volcano and Kona than some places, it was near to all the lesser known gems we cared to visit while on the Big Island and set alongside one of the most scenic drives in the Islands. We couldn't wait to come home each day. The friendly insects and animals only added to the charm--we've fondly nicknamed the bull "Ferdinand." The house is well designed and seemed larger than it actually is-- gazing at the view of Maui's Haleakala out the bathroom sink window as you get ready for the day was a treat. The only negative was poor cell phone reception from our carriers, but the WIFI worked great. Thank you for the wonderful home and your hospitality. We can't wait to return to this little slice of Big Island heaven!
The drive up to the house is absolutely incredible. The house is peaceful and set back from the road. Distant views of the ocean and watching the sunset made this rental a gem! The hosts were very gracious and left us a basket of goodies including fresh fruit, homemade dried curried coconut and macadamia nuts. We were also allowed to pick fresh fruit from the trees next to the property. This home had everything we were looking for. Quiet, nice outdoor patio, open concept living area, unique feel to it, and private. The property is nearly surrounded by a fence as there are horses on the property. They added to the atmosphere and my husband and I loved watching them from the patio. Booking this rental was easy and hassle free and we received a quick response when inquiring. I would highly recommend this rental to anyone looking for a relaxing peaceful getaway with a unique touch. It is a little bit of a drive to get to the coastline as the Kohala area sits up high above the coastline, but the views are so incredible we did not mind one bit. The nearby Pololu Valley was our favorite beach/hike. I would stay here again if we ever get the chance to come back! Good value for the price.
