My husband and I grew up vacationing at beaches. We are beach bums. I spent my summers at the New Jersey shore and my husband at the beaches of Cape Cod MA. Although we may debate which is the better place in the States (NJ shore or Cape Cod), one thing we both agree on is that Playa Cofresi, Dominican Republic is the most relaxing and most unique place to vacation. Whether we are looking for simple quiet time loating pool or dozing in the hammock, looking to swim & snorkel at local beaches, or want to venture off on more exciting adventures in the countryside there are always plenty of options. Of course having an attentive maid serving non-stop drinks and food is a big plus!
Our 3 children have grown up at Cofresi and think of it as their 2nd home. They benefitted from the “fun aspects”; the privileges of having a staffed Caribbean vacation home. But they have also had the opportunity to experience a different culture, to observe how people from other countries live and have learned to understand that there are many different ways to enjoy life despite economic status. This educational aspect has been priceless.
In 2006, Donald Smith (Cindy's father) passed away and the property & rental management transferred to Cindy. In memory of Don's passion for his beloved Cofresi home, for his devotion to his Dominican family, and for his love of this colorful country we will continue to cultivate his dream. We hope you will stay at our beautiful family home so that you can share our enthusiasm for this wonderful vacation destination.
Cindy & John Charters purchased this villa in 1982
Villa Vista del Mar at Playa Cofresi has been our family's second home since 1982. We first traveled to this secluded unspoiled area back in the days when there were few tourists, supermarkets did not exist in town, horse-drawn carts were a common sight, and cows wandered about on our dirt roads.
This all began when Lenore and Donald Smith, Cindy's parents, went on a business trip to the Dominican Republic in 1981 and visited the North Coast where they were told they would find some of the Caribbean's prettiest beaches. They became enchanted with Playa Cofresi and on the 'spur of the moment' decided to buy property.
The original house was built in 1982 when there were just a handful of homes in this pastoral ocean-side community. When they retired in 1995, they spent more time in Cofesi made major additions & and improvements to the villa to provide more spacious accommodations for their extended family.
The property continues to grow and change with the needs of our family and guests.
If you are looking for a relaxing, comfortable and affordable vacation... maybe something slightly off the beaten path you have come to right place. Villa Vista del Mar was built for comfort, fun and safety; and with expansive yards on all sides you will not feel the intrusion of neighboring homes.
We have been in the hospitality business for over 30 years and have tried to think of everything to make your vacation run as smoothly and as carefree as possible. Our experienced extensive full time staff will pamper you to no end, but will also retreat to their quarters to allow you to have privacy. The maids will attend to all cooking, serving, cleaning and laundry starting in the morning with made-to-order breakfast and freshly squeezed orange juice. Throughout the day they will 'twist your arm' asking you if you'd like another pina colada while you are floating in the pool. Your most difficult decisions will be to decide what to eat and when to eat... The pampering does not end until they leave for the day... Or until your vacation ends
Our full time houseman is available for airport transfer service, to run errands, to go food shopping and more. We have a manager available 24/ 7 for those “just in case” scenarios, and a local tour operator who will come to the house to help you with the multitude of activities, tours and adventures. You will be well taken care of by the many people who have become our 2nd family. There is a detailed Villa Orientation Book, Suggested Meal Planning Guide, Local Restaurant recommendations, Descriptions of Tours & Activities and more.
When you arrive at the villa all you have to do is unpack and relax. Slow down. Go with the flow. Listen to the waves and songbirds. Admire the panoramic ocean and mountain views. Life is different, more relaxed. You will become quickly acclimated to the phrase 'no problema'. Hopefully you will enjoy every moment at your own private Caribbean home away from home.
We had a great time. The staff was great- just like everyone said on your guest comments.
The Villa was perfectly equipped.
We had very good time and will definitely recommend it to friends!
We are a group of eight master gardeners who take an annual trip together. This year we chose Vista Del Mar and we couldn't have chosen a more beautiful luxurious home away from home. The villa is truly paradise, the scenery stunning and the people warm and friendly. As promised, Julio was waiting at the airport to deliver us and Mercy and Nelsida had drinks and snacks waiting for our arrival. We absolutely fell in love with the villa and the staff. They were so accommodating and quick to fill our every need. From full fabulous breakfasts on the patio to lobster dinners in the evening; to pina coladas, rum punch, margaritas and cerveza by the pool. The meals were delicious and the weather was sunny and warm.
Gus was a wonderful tour agent. We went horseback riding on the beach (a must), waterfall sliding on the jeep safari, cable car riding to the top of Mount Isabella, to the rum factory and the Amber museum and a day trip to Santo Domingo. We also spent a day at Sosua Beach- a gorgeous expanse of aqua blue water with wonderful snorkeling. Nelsida and Indio even took us to downtown Puerto Plata to celebrate Carnival on Sunday afternoon and then out to dance the Maringue at the Rancho Tapico. What fun!
We "adopted" Pablo, the sweet night guard and took him coffee in the morning and shared our dinner with him each night.
You will find the Dominican people truly appreciate Americans and do everything to help us feel welcome in their country. There are not enough words to express how much we loved the week we spent with the staff. We all cried when we had to leave them. It felt like we were leaving family and will truly miss them. We hope to see them again in the future and to revisit the villa. If you are thinking about vacationing there, don't think twice! You won't regret it. Cindy was exceptionally nice and communicated everything perfectly, making for a perfect vacation.
Thank you Cindy, Julio, Mercy, Nelsida and Pablo!
We were a family of 12, ages 10 to 77, and everyone had a great time! The villa is just as represented on their web site. It is very clean and well kept. The staff, Julio, Mercy and Glennie, were wonderful. Mercy and Glennie prepared 3 meals a day. The food was good and fresh - not gourmet but tasty. It is not spicy - except for the chicken salad. you get a list of foods to choose from ahead of time and can add or delete what you want. The Wi-Fi works well as does the cable TV. The electricity is compatible with US current. The only problem that we had was, although the bedrooms have A.C. so you have no problem sleeping, the rest of the villa is not. There are lots of fans but, since we were there for a very hot August week, we felt uncomfortable sitting in the living room watching the Olympics. I would love to return during the cooler months. Nothing like Pina coladas in the pool!
We celebrated our 50th anniversary at this villa with our 14 member strong kids and grandkids. We were totally delighted and satisfied. Having the three staff members around 7 days a week is very nice. Nobody in the group had to do anything, but enjoy life. For any large group that wants to visit the North Coast of the Dominican Republic, this villa is heaven.
Julio, Mercy, and Ingrid have spoiled us totally! The vacation began at the airport, where we didn't have to worry about finding our way - and it continued with fun trips, relaxation, great food and such nice people. The Villa is absolutely beautiful. Our group's ages are spread from 18 to 78, but Gus worked with us to find tours that were right for everyone. The family favorites were the catamaran and snorkeling for all, and the Jeep safari for the younger folks. We especially enjoyed Mercy's cooking and having everything all set up for us so we could eat when we wanted to. I can't say enough about how friendly and considerate all of the staff were to our family; Ingrid wouldn't let us do anything. The beautiful setting and being surrounded by friendly people made this trip one of our favorites.
There are many reviews covering all of the wonderful aspects of staying here, but the most important theme for our group of 11 ranging from 19yo to 70yo was how perfect the trip as a whole was. Julio, Mercy, Ingrid, and Gus made sure our biggest problem was figuring out what days we wanted to do all of the amazing things, including days of rest and relaxation in the pool at home. The villa, country, people, and activities were all perfect.
You will be waited on 100%! A glorious experience. You wont lift a finger to do anything. Lots of fun and laughter. The people here are simply amazing, fun and friendly. Snorkeling an absolute must. The staff here work hard to make sure your every need is met. Wonderful meals prepared every day in this beautiful Villa. Would not hesitate to come back!
