Thank you for visiting the listing for Newfound Cottage! Last year brought some great changes! We added some very exciting high end amenities for our guests ...

It's not too good to be true, we really are on my family's privately owned 120 acre mountainside farm among a forest of trees and wilderness! Only 8.7 miles from the Asheville City Limits [via in-town roads] and 5.7 miles from I-40, Newfound Cottage is minutes from major attractions! The cottage is the furthest structure on the mountain and my residence resides 2 acres below, so we're close enough to be helpful, but you have your privacy. The road to the cottage is 1/2 a mile long, so the cottage can't be seen from the main road. Kitchen, dining, foyer and living area are part of the open floor plan with vaulted ceilings and beautiful hard wood floors. Pictures cannot convey how in reality this cottage lives or feels. The hot tub, on-site hiking, swimming pool, outdoor fireplace, covered front 'n back decks, beauty of the mountain wilderness, convenient home-like extras, loads of incredibly interesting wilderness property to explore and located out-of-sight ... this place just can't be beat! There are a lot of wonderful places to have a vacation rental, but Newfound Cottage is situated to be called "among the best" !! To experience nature in the quiet and calm of a mountainside setting is a luxury some never get to experience. I've been told I could charge more for such a place simply because of the peace 'n quiet, beauty, so much privately owned property, along with my efforts extended into the decor and provisions, but the current rates charged reflect the 1400 sq. ft. size of the cottage, while still offering 3 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, hot tub, WiFi, hiking and an outdoor fireplace and swimming pool! Yes, this is the 'cottage in the mountains' you've been looking for! Destination ... southern hospitality!!

About Tammy

My husband and I have been married since 1990 and have had both full time and vacation rentals since 1993. We're big DIYers. I am an artist by nature, so interior decorating comes natural to me. My husband has artistic skills and abilities too but prefers building things. We built our cottage with our own four hands over a 3 yr. period, every weekend, every holiday, and our own money. A vacation rental business suits me for being able to earn income from home while keeping myself available for my school-age son, having time for family/school activities, as well as being able to clean and maintain my vacation rentals to my high standards.

Tammy purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Tammy chose Asheville Area

The community of Newfound in Leicester is a farming community. Since we loved the area enough to build our dream home here, we knew our guests would appreciate a home-away-from-home in a true country setting. Perfect location being 5.7 miles from the interstate, 20 minutes from downtown and only 25 minutes to the Biltmore Estate. So you get to enjoy time "vacationing" instead of driving. It's the best of both worlds.

What makes this cottage unique

Relaxing in the mountain setting with lightning bugs and tree frogs at night, song birds during the day, being in a well maintained clean house, beautifully decorated, minutes from major attractions, while having simple amenities like satellite TV, WiFi, magazines, board games and DVDs in case of less than favorable weather. But also having the high end amenities like a hot tub, outdoor fireplace, onsite hiking and swimming pool when there's nothing but perfect weather is in sight!!!

Great Place to Stay!

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this "cottage". The house was lovely and much better than the pictures show! We enjoyed the hot tub and the outdoor fireplace so much! My sons and daughter-in-law also enjoyed their hike up the mountain behind the house. The driveway is extremely steep - but we made it ok! Would recommend to anyone wanting to stay in the Asheville area! Thanks so much!

Perfect for Everyone!!!

  • 5 of 5

Newfound cottage was a perfect holiday getaway for all. Our group had varied interests and holiday expectations. This wonderful cottage is situated in an area with something for everyone. We enjoyed both leisurely and challenging hikes and climbs up the mountain without having to leave the family owned property. Day trips into Asheville were a short car ride through the most beautiful mountain roads. Everyone was able to enjoy the local restaurants, museums and night life. The cottage was spacious yet cozy, immaculate, and well stocked with everything we needed. We were able to prepare everything in the kitchen from lobster and steak to a five course breakfast. It was obvious that the owners care so much about their home and the needs of their guests. Every effort was made for our comfort. They went the extra mile to make sure we had all the information we would need to enjoy the area. Best for last, we loved, loved the back deck with the awesome hot tub and adjacent brand new outdoor fireplace. The whole family spent evenings by the fire watching sunsets. We would definitely return and recommend!!!

Communications tone was a problem

  • 3 of 5

The property is beautifully decorated and the mountains are lovely, but we were somewhat disappointed during our stay. We were not aware of how long a drive the cottage would be from the attractions we had come to see in Asheville; advance communications we got AFTER paying suggested five miles or eight miles from the city line, but the winding mountain roads made these very difficult miles in late-night rain and darkness. I would recommend Newfound cottage only for those who are sure they don't want to go to Asheville frequently as the drive was tedious so we didn't go back and forth as we had planned. Secondly, the tone of communications never seemed to match the tone of communications here in the review forum. Communications had a bit of haranguing for the misdeeds of past renters: when I would set the thermostat, I'd encounter a paper describing how renters had torn up the back yard by driving on it. When I read the renters' guidelines, I'd have to read through an excessively lengthy discussion about how families like to spend way too much time in the hot tub and how this will result in folliculitis. I'd recommend rewriting all these materials and focusing on the positives. Instead of yet another note about how a husband got a nasty cut lifting way too many beer bottles that broke a garbage bag, how about simply leaving a box and a short sign "Leave bottles here." Instead of arguing with a previous renter who complained about the worn teflon skillet, how about just replacing the skillet? (The renter was right; the teflon pan was unusable.) Instead of telling me you do all the cleaning yourself when the first person I meet in town tells me that she just finished cleaning the cottage for us, let us know who did the work so we can leave an appreciative tip. In addition to communicating positively, work on upgrading the towel situation. One towel is not enough for an entire week, towels need to be placed in the bathrooms upstairs, and the polyester hot tub towel isn't improving the situation. Finally, instead of saying that the new pool has been promised to be finished by the date we began our stay, advise renters in advance that there will be men on the property hammering for an entire week. Courteous, positive and nondefensive communications will be appreciated by future renters.

Best vacation yet

  • 5 of 5

My husband, two children, brother & sister-in-law, and I spent our Christmas vacation at Newfound Cottage and it truly was a home away from home. We were all comfortable and had privacy. It was so much better than crowding into a tiny hotel room. We had our own rooms and bathrooms. We were able to relax and have company. Loved it and would definitely stay again. There were plenty of toys and movies to entertain the children. The convenience of the kitchen was wonderful, saved on having to eat out.

Beautiful Countryside, Nice Little Cottage...

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our time in N.C., especially in October with the beautiful fall colors! From our 'headquarters' in Newfound Cottage we enjoyed day-outings hiking mountains, viewing waterfalls, driving the Blueridge Parkway and back mountain roads canopied by trees lush with fall color! We were about 20-25 minutes from Asheville. Enjoyed a day touring the VanderBilt Mansion.

Newfound Cottage was VERY comfortable for my husband and I. We only made use of the main floor which gave us a large bedroom (comfortable queen bed) with master bath, another bathroom with a tub/shower combo, a living room with comfortable seating, and a nice sized kitchen with dining area. Unlike so many VRBO renters, we make use of the kitchen! This was an adequately stocked kitchen. We do a lot of grilling. I did specifically ask if there was one on the property. Tammy, the owner, kindly explained that they had not had a grill there for some time because 99% of the renters do not make use of it. HOWEVER, she was very quick to say that they would gladly purchase one if it were a deal breaker. Understanding her perspective as a property owner we declined her offer and brought our own portable grill. We parked it on the back porch just off the kitchen, and all was well! But, again, a generous offer on Tammy's part!

We enjoyed the location. It was just a short distance to town, yet secluded and quiet. Yes, you can see the owner's house from the cottage, but we only saw them once when they came to pick up the trash. They are very respectful of their guests privacy.

We enjoy watching movies in the evening so, knowing there was a DVD player, we brought several from our local library. As indicated in the overview there are many to choose from in the cottage, also.

A big disappointment/frustration was with the internet. For business purposes my husband has to have a good, strong reception. This service was not at all adequate. He found a Starbucks a few miles away and accomplished the job there. Please know that there is internet/Wifi however it is very slow, evening and morning being the slowest.

And this I found surprising - after I had committed with deposit to a 10 night stay, my confirmation stated that those staying longer than a week are expected to clean: mop floors, wash towels & bathmats, dust, scrub toilets...

We've stayed 10 nights in several VRBO's. This was the first with cleaning requirements.

Lesson learned: know what's expected of you before you pay.

Better than home!

  • 5 of 5

We spent several days at Newfound Cottage with my parents and adult son. The home is lovely, beautifully furnished and very comfortable. Absolutely spotless. Small enough to be cozy but big enough so everyone has space of their own. The owners have spent an enormous amount of time setting the home up for tourists. There are brochures about the area, directions to all the attractions and information about local medical care which we unfortunately needed. How nice it was to have the information right at hand, tho', instead of scrambling to find out where to go. We all enjoyed it. The property is lovely, very peaceful but very accessible. I would recommend this to anyone and gladly stay there again.

Owner's Response: Having a vacation rental in an area that attracts tourists for both it's relaxing beauty and rigorous physical activites means you can offer the best of both worlds. I strive to offer information about casual recreation as well as more physical ventures, and yes medical inforamtion, I think my guests would need or be intersted in that is in the immediate area. And when guests are out all day taking advantage of what Asheville has to offer, they return to their home-away-from-home knowing it's clean, comfortable, and is well supplied and they can relax. And isn't that what a vacation is all about? Relaxation, nearby recreation and an atmosphere catering to both young and old. Newfound Cottage offers just that.
