Ocean View House on the South Pacific Coast

Bedrooms 2
Property type house
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

House, 2 Bedrooms + Other (See Description), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4)

BETWEEN DOMINICAL AND THE OSA PENINSULA! Enjoy Costa Rican coffee while watching toucans, parrots and even squirrel monkeys. In fact, we have recently changed the name to Casa del Mono Titi since we frequently see these little monkeys climbing and jumping through the trees adjacent to the house. The villa is located on the Pacific coast in southwest Costa Rica on a mountainside with a spectacular view of Cano island and the Osa Peninsula. Several beaches are nearby, including those at Marina Ballena National Park. The Osa Peninsula, one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world, is close enough for a day trip.

Although the bedrooms are air conditioned, you may not need it. Since the 1000 foot elevation is cooler than sea level, the ceiling fans in every room and outside are usually sufficient for comfort. The kitchen is fully equipped and there is a gas grill; however, if you don't feel like cooking several excellent restaurants are an easy drive. We'll be glad to let you know a few of our favorites.

There are numerous activities available nearby. Cano Island is famous for diving and snorkling. You can arrange zip-line canopy tours, whale watching, kayaking, horseback riding, 4-wheeling, birding, and numerous other activities and tours. A day trip to Coronado National Park is possible, and Manuel Antonio, the most visited national park in the country, is an hour and a half away. Boruca, a village named after the indigenous people who live there, is about an hour drive away. Crafts, such as the masks and woven purses and backpacks that you will see in many shops in CR can be purchased from the artists in the village.

If there are any problems at the house, we have a local manager who can set things right for you. The rental price includes cleaning after your stay. If you would like cleaning services during your stay, the manager can arrange this for an additional fee.

The villa is a few kms south of Ojochal near the village of Coronado. It is 3 km from the Costanera Highway, accessible by 4x4. (A 4X4 vehicle is necessary!!) It is a 4 1/2-5 hour drive from San Jose through the Sierra de la Muerte, a beautiful mountain range; a 3 1/2-4 hour drive via the new highway and the coastal highway; or a 40 minute flight to a local airport in Palmar Sur.

Beautiful house, but not great for wildlife

  • 4 of 5

Everyone mentions the view for a reason. It really is exceptionally gorgeous. It's hard to imagine a more enjoyable place to be in the morning and early evening than sitting on the large covered patio, looking out at the coastline, the farmland, and the distant mountains. The pool at this house is wonderful - much larger than many of the "dipping pools" at other rental homes - and nicely shaded in the morning and late afternoons. Our main disappointment with this house was the absence of wildlife. The great view is a result of the lack of trees around the house. So not a single monkey the whole week. We occasionally heard howlers off in the distance. On our last trip to CR we stayed in an off-the-grid house surrounded by trees. If you want to have the experience of waking up to the sounds of the jungle and watching monkeys and toucans close by, this is not the house for you. On the other hand, we were there at the hottest part of the year, and it's a hot year. So the air conditioned bedrooms definitely had their advantage.

Owner's Response: I'm sorry you were disappointed in the wildlife. The monkeys don't always put on a show. Thanks for the compliments about the house.

Excellent arrangements between owner and property manager but there were some problems with rental

Beautiful time but pool had toad feces every morning with only one cleaning over 2 weeks. Hot water heater is very inadequate for 2 couples

Owner's Response: Sorry about the pool. I have been told it was cleaned once a week. I know you have friends who live in the area. If they have found a way to ban toads from their pool, please let me know. We've been trying since we purchased the house. Also, we are looking into a larger hot water heater. I always shower outside. I hope you enjoyed your stay in spite of the problems.

Wow!!! Wow!!! Wow!!!

What can I say about this perfect house?? My husband and I have rented houses all over the world and this was by far the best one we've ever had. I had to pick my chin up off the floor when we first arrived. It is absolutely beautiful! The view is the first thing that grabs you and never gets old. The house is amazing and the owner has thought of everything!! The more than fully equipped kitchen was perfect. We cooked most of our meals in because we didn't want to leave paradise. We spent a leisurely week here either staying on our hilltop paradise or checking out the beautiful beaches. From the birds in the morning to the spectacular sunsets in the afternoon to the stars at night I can't say enough wonderful things about this property. I call Denise a "rock star" in the property management field. She met us at a restaurant and we followed her to the house. She was available to us the entire week if we needed anything. She made us feel most welcome. When (not if) we come back again we want to stay here longer. It was so hard to leave. We highly recommend the Exotica restaurant for a delicious and romantic dinner and the Bamboo Room restaurant for a great meal and live music. John and Janet (the owners) made us feel right at home. If you're spending time in the Ojochal area this house is a must!!!

Perfect Paradise!

  • 5 of 5

This was the absolute perfect place to stay! Every morning, we woke up around 5 and sat on the big beautiful wraparound porch and watched and listened to the wildlife--and there was always so much! Just at the house, we saw toucans, aracaris, a coati, squirrel and howler monkeys, a zillion hummingbirds, bullfrogs as big as plates, chirping lizards, a Blue Morpho butterfly...the list goes on. Our favorites were the pair of toucans who came every morning and evening to say hi. They were so funny!

The house was great for our needs. We played some of the board games kept there, read a book or two, and watched a tiny bit of Downton Abbey. Often we would just sit on the porch and watch the waves in the ocean to the right, or storms in the mountains to the left, or swim in the pool at night and marvel at the bright stars.

The area the house is in is beautiful and user-friendly. We went to a different beach almost every day, hiked to waterfalls, and made frequent trips to the BM supermarket in town. Everyone was very friendly and accommodating. One day we drove down to Sierpe and did some adventuring (mangrove tour was spectacular!) as well as visiting an archaeological site (Finca 6).

One of my favorite things about this trip was getting to know one of the neighbors a little bit, and making friends with a nature guide in Sierpe. By the last night, when we drove down to a nearby bar and restaurant for a quick bite to eat, then ran into the neighbor and sat and chatted for an hour or two, it was starting to feel like home. Everything there was just saturated in natural beauty. My perfect vacation. When I got home, I felt completely unwound and relaxed. My boss said I even looked younger!

The only caution I have about the house is that you MUST have a 4 wheel drive vehicle to get up to it, and it is a bumpy ride--but that was not a big deal for us. I cannot say enough good things about this wonderful property and this area. HIGHLY recommended. We will absolutely be back!

A place to get away from the ratrace

  • 5 of 5

Casa Mono Titi is a great place to relax, enjoy the great views overlooking the mountainside and the Pacific Ocean, sip a caprihinia on the covered patio, take a dip in the pool, and just let your worries fade away. The house is well-maintained and fully equipped with all modern conveniences. There is plenty of room and the huge windows invite the outside in. There is plenty of comfortable cushioned furniture outside on the patio, and the laundry facilities in the separate bodega make a great convenience – you don’t have to hear the washing machine and dryer running to interrupt your listening to the birds and monkeys cavorting in the trees!

The long road going up the mountain can be a bit tricky – definitely a 4-wheeled vehicle is needed, but once you arrive, the drive seems well worth it. In the area, you can visit Manuel Antonio National Park, the Osa peninsula, Boruca village (a native town way off in the mountains where they make and sell homemade native crafts such as carved masks, weavings, pottery, etc.) and relax at Playa Ballena Beach Club for dinner and drinks. If you want more active entertainments, there is horseback riding, zip lines, visits to a waterfall, browsing the local shops in the small villages in the area, and shopping for local fruits, vegetables, and meats in the local groceries. You can’t go wrong spending time at Casa Mono Titi to revitalize and reconstitute!
