We are a sociable couple in pension.
After we had for a long time our own dental clinic in Lucerne, we enjoy now to indulge our hobby's at home. We love hiking, making music and to accommodate guests from around the world. We know Switzerland very well and can give you the best advice in planning your vacation on spot.
Vreni + Karl Baier purchased this apartment in 1993
The Sonnenblume House is centrally located in the recreational area of Lucerne. We are very well served by public transportation. The house has a well kept garden and with the house's own bicycle you reach the Lake, the main attractions in Lucerne and the mountain railway within a very short time.
When my husband and I decided to spend 5 days around the Lucerne area, we debated whether to stay in a hotel in Lucerne or to look for an apartment or house around the lake. This little apartment was the best of both worlds. With the train only a few minutes walk, and Lucerne only 4 minutes by train, we could be in the city in a short time. But we also had a kitchen to prepare breakfast and pack lunches if we wanted, and we got to leave the noise and bustle of the city at night for a quiet residential area.
There is an Aldi's for groceries just a few minutes walk and we found a really good restaurant within walking distance as well. Kuonimatt Steakhouse was a hit for both the steak and pizza, as well as the ambiance. Pilatus is easy to get to from here. We also took a couple of cruises on the lake.
The apartment is exactly as it appears in the pictures. It was spotless and comfortable. Every time we needed something, it was there. I was impressed with how thoroughly the place was stocked. A lot of time has gone into making it comfortable for guests.
Vreni and Charly are incredibly nice people. He met us at the train station and showed us around the apartment. If he was on his patio when we returned, he would always ask if everything was ok. We had drinks with them one night, which was really nice. It was fun to have a local to ask questions of. But you can also have as much privacy as you like.
We made the right decision in staying in this apartment in Kreins.
We are a family of 3 with a 4 month old baby girl living in London and we arrived in Lucerne close to 9PM on a rainy night. The kind lady of the house Vreni was awaiting us at the Kriens Matenhof station with an umbrella. She walked with us to the house Sonenblume,2-3 min walk away from the station, right at the foot of Pilatus (amazing view!) . There we met Charlie, her husband and were shown our flat (an out house attached to the main house). We had requested a baby cot for our baby which was promptly provided. Charlie and Vreni checked if we were happy and left. The house was immaculately clean and exactly as shown in the pictures. The kitchen was fully equipped with utensils, coffee maker, kettle, toaster and various other appliances some of which we made use of during the duration of our stay.
We made Lucerne our base and travelled everywhere from Lucerne. Vreni and Charlie have loads of information to pass on and have stocked up a huge shelf with leaflets, books etc. Lucerne is 5 mins away from Kriens Mattenhof by trains with trains running every 15 mins to Lucerne. From Lucerne you have various connections either by ferry or trains.
We had one meal outside everyday depending on the time we left. We bought our basic groceries (bread cheese, frozen pizza) from Lucerne mostly at coop at Lucerne station. there is also an Aldi about 15 min walk away from the house. There is a bus stop, approx 10 min walk, with buses going to Kriens and has cafes/restaurant etc.
Vreni and Charlie are amazing hosts. We met them each morning and night and had conversations about our day and travels. Our little baby girl was Vreni's favourite. They have a beautiful and well kept garden with very friendly dog and two cats. We also met some of their friends and their sister who was a delight to talk to. We were a little worried travelling first time with our baby but Vreni and Charlie made it feel like home for us. We have not one bit to complain about for the 9 days we stayed there. We definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for crisp clean atmosphere, away from the busy city and a home away from home with lovely hosts. Thank you and we will surely come back.
What a lovely place to stay during any trip to Lucerne. Charlie and his wife are amazing hosts and will welcome you to the apt in style. Charlie met us at the train station, one stop outside Lucerne, and walked with us the 5 minutes back to the house. The apt is impeccably clean and there was a goodie basket of local Swiss products waiting for us on the counter. The The gardens are lovely and sitting outside on the patio in the morning, listening to the birds sing while drinking coffee/tea is a great start to the day! The apt is conveniently located within a 15 min bike of the Lucerne train station and one of the best perks, offers two bikes for your personal use. My wife and biked to all the major sites in town and were able to see part of the countryside we wouldn't have been able to if staying in the city. The small kitchen is perfect for cooking lunches or dinners and there is an Aldi just minutes away by foot or bike that offers a wide selection of fresh fruits, vegetables and breads. If you prefer to eat out, there are also numerous restaurants in Kriens which are less touristy and offer more local fare than you would find in the city centre. All in all, this was a gem of a find and we will definitely stay here again on any trip to Lucerne!
This clean, attractive retreat served as a perfect home base for our trip to Lucerne. It is located in a lovely, safe neighborhood within walking distance to the train station. It is close to Lucerne, but away from the busy touristy areas.
Charlie greeted us at the train station, and welcomed us with a bowl of fresh cherries from the farmer's market. He and his wife are attentive and interesting hosts.
We would love to return to this very special place.
During our recent three week vacation in Switzerland, we were privileged for one week to enjoy the amenities of the "Studio Apartment Sonnenblume"! The apartment is exactly as represented by the photographs, was immaculately clean, boasted every comfort and amenity that two persons could hope for, and is owned by two of the most delightful, caring, and hospitable owners that anyone could hope to meet!
Charly, a retired dentist and still avid musician, was gracious enough to meet us at the local "Kriens Mattenhof" train station upon our arrival! ...Rolling our suitcases along the sidewalk for less than 4 minutes found us at the doorstep of our wonderfully impeccable
apartment! The bed was very comfortable, the bathroom/shower offered plenty of hot water, the kitchen was perfect to prepare light evening meals, WIFI worked very well,
the Espresso machine provided a wonderful beginning to our mornings, oversized easy chairs in the living area along with ample lighting permitted relaxing evening reading, and
in a most inviting manner, a table and chairs right outside our front door in the midst of beautiful tranquil gardens, provided a peaceful oasis to sip a glass of wine!
With the local train station 4 minutes by foot, and the local bus stop only two minutes away, this apartment served as the perfect "home base" from which to enjoy the myriad of delights that the Lucerne area has to offer! A large and wonderful COOP grocery store was accessible via the local bus (#16) to the "Pilatusmarkt" for day to day yearnings!
In only 4 minutes by S5 or S4 train from Kriens-Mattenhof( trains come every 15 minutes) you arrive at the Lucerne HauptBahnhof (Main train station). Once in Lucerne, we enjoyed over the course of our week, walking the streets of the Altstadt (Old Town),
crossing the Chapel Bridge, 4 different scenic boat rides on Lake Lucerne, an excursion to Mt Pilatus (Go only on a clear day), walking along the lake promenade to the Transport Museum, and on our one rainy day, a delightful tour of the Hergiswil Glassworks Factory!
The highlight of our trip, however, was a delightful evening spent with our hosts, Charly and his wonderful wife, Vreni! We were blessed to be able to share evening wine and appetizers, and even a marvelous "seafood soup" prepared by Vreni!!--We feel twice blessed after our memorable week in Lucerne--once for the perfect apartment, and secondly, for the wonderful new friends that we now have! WE WILL BE BACK!!
Charlie and Vreni were so wonderful to us! Charlie met us at the train station in Kriens when we arrived (which is right around the corner from the apartment) and he took us to the rental.
The rental was very clean and well furnished and everything was in perfect working order.
We enjoyed sitting outside on the patio to drink a coffee/tea while journaling our adventures in Kriens/Luzern while having short visits from the family's dog and cat (whom are very friendly and are great company for someone like me who misses her pets at home very much!).
Everything about this rental was terrific and I would recommend it to anyone looking to stay in Switzerland!
Thank you for your wonderful hospitality!
