Very relaxing, large property with garden to explore. Comfortable bed, overall very happy
This property was accurately described and very clean. Our hostess and host were very helpful in giving advice and insight. Not only is this property lovely, but our hostess did extra sweet touches (fresh flower arrangements & dinner table set and ready).
So glad we splurged and stayed overnight on this side of the island. Gave us so much more time to explore and rest. Stay at least one night. Travel tip, we looped from the south and then traveled the Hana Hwy back. Loved having the roads to ourselves. Moalo!
We loved every minute of our stay at Entabeni. The online photos perfectly portray it-- it was cozy and charming and immaculate. It's an undeniably special place and was the perfect spot for us to start our Maui vacation. We loved staying in Hana for the first part of our trip as it's difficult not to relax here and get into the aloha spirit. It's just a very short drive to the town of Hana-- on the way there is the incredibly delicious organic coconut milk ice cream spot- Coconut Glen's... and the amazing black sand beach. Hana itself is so quaint- we loved exploring and stopped into a few shops- the General Store and the Art Gallery were our favorites. We had some delicious Thai Food at one of several food trailers.... we also loved Hamoa Beach. We did have a good deal of rain-- it authenticated our rain forest experience though and I thoroughly enjoyed my walk through the incredible gardens and grounds in the rain. It is how I imagine the Garden of Eden may have been... or what Heaven will be like. Yes, it was that amazing. The vegetables and eggs were a nice touch and so delicious. Terry.... well she was amazing. Michael was traveling on business so we didn't get to meet him. She is kind and considerate and I really didn't want to leave. I want to be clear that she was only around if you wanted her to be- the cottage is quite private. On the day we were leaving, we had the chance to really visit and get to know her better- and honestly we were sad to leave. We had more in common than I ever dreamed.... :) We hope to go back someday-- soon! Mahalo!
We loved this place! It's like staying in your very own private "Garden of Eden". Definitely a hidden gem along the Hana Highway. The studio style cottage is so cozy with a full kitchen and everything we needed for preparing our own meals. The property itself is so beautiful & interesting, with the lush jungle surroundings, a view of the ocean from the cottage, and so many magnificent flowers & plants. We stayed here for 3 nights and it was such a bonus to be able to go out and take in some of the amazing sights and waterfalls along the Hana Highway earlier or later in the day when it wasn't nearly as busy. Would highly recommend trying to fit in at least a couple of nights in this area when planning a vacation on the island. Thanks Michael & Terry for sharing your incredible home with us (and your fresh eggs) and for all your helpful suggestions. We will certainly be recommending Entabeni Cottage to anyone we know that is heading to Maui.
We wanted to explore the Hana area and what better way than staying locally. This solar powered cottage retreat is tucked away in a tropical flower/forest locale. It was very comfortable and had everything we could ask for. We received fresh eggs two mornings while there. The eggs were excellent. The cottage was very relaxing and comfortable. We had one late afternoon/evening of rain and it was nice to sit on the porch and watch the rain. There are plenty of DVDs to choose from if you want to sit back and watch a movie. We took a nice walk around the farm and had the Guinea Fowl following us around. This was ideally located to explore the Hana area from. Remember to bring food for breakfasts and dinner as most of the food places are only open till mid afternoon. If we come back to Hana, we will look into this again. This cottage was exactly like we expected and met our needs well. Thank you very much!
First the good. The location is beautiful and unique. Tons of plants. The guinea fowl that roam around were very entertaining and fun. Beautiful ocean view from the cottage. Plus, there aren't a ton of places to stay on the Road to Hana, so finding one that was relatively affordable was great. You are basically right in the middle of Road to Hana activities and within an easy drive to everything.
Now the bad. First, we arrived to find out that Terry and Michael just left for Italy for a month. Many of the prior reviews spoke warmly of their hospitality and experiences picking vegetables from the garden. Left in charge of the property were a couple 20-something WWOOF'ers (a program in which people work on farms in exchange for room and board). The young men were gracious, polite and helpful with routine issues, but we didn't get the same personal touch that other reviewers discussed from the owners.
Second, the cottage was nicely wiped down from the previous guests; however, it seemed overdo for a thorough cleaning. There were crumbs in the drawers, some food splatter in the utensil holders, dirt/dead gnats behind the nightstand and bed. We found and killed several very large bugs in the cottage during our stay. Granted, it is the jungle and it rained while we were there, which can understandably cause them to come out of hiding, but we thought it was excessive. We emailed Terry, who apologized and asked for more details. We responded, and asked for a partial refund that essentially amounted to one free night since we would have left a night early, but were unable to begin our next stay early. Now a week later, and she has not responded to our request or to a follow up email.
Finally, just some perspective in light of prior reviewers. You are in the jungle. It is hot, humid, there is no A/C and only a meek ceiling fan. There are tons of mosquitos, and we had to leave the doors open at night, so some bugs got into the cottage (even though there are screens, they weren't in the greatest shape, so bugs got in). Bring light, long-sleeved shirts and pants if you want to sit on the porch.
Overall, cottage is in a beautiful, unique setting. With a little more care, it would easily have 5 stars. But it felt neglected (both the cottage and us as guests). I would still recommend the cottage to others who are looking for a bit of an adventure and are prepared for the bugs, but not to people who aren't ready for an outdoorsy experience.
