We stayed here on vacation and fell in love with this property 16 years ago.
We decide to retire early and live off of the organic gardens here: we didn't know how to farm yet!
The last 16 years has been so much fun and gone so fast; we actually believe we died and went to heaven because it has been so wonderful. .
Rich is a retired electrical engineer/physicist with an interest in the Universe Story.
Sandra is a retired teacher, holds a masters in transpersonal psychology, and is a master photographer (Google search on Sandra Lee Reha). Sadly, Rich passed away in 2010.
Sandra Reha purchased this house in 1998
As stated, We fell in love with the property. That feeling only grows
as a beautiful life here continues. No street lights or signs ensures the rural life is perpetuated.
No pesticides have been used here for over 30 years, so the birds love everything, including free bananas, figs, other fruits, and we have hundreds of wild birds that return to our bamboo patches over night.
There are no street lights in Wood Valley, and only a few houses, so at our 2400 foot elevation, the andromeda galaxy and the milky way are magnificent: better than I have ever seen anywhere. Children love to hand feed our tame goat, and some of our sheep herd. We have a harness for the goat to pull children around the property in our wagon.
Last but not least is the spectacular Spring Water: bathe and drink the purest water on the planet, only a few minutes from its spring source with no storage or chlorination: only pure water.
The Hawaii Nature Retreat is an amazing place to relax breath in perfume air with organic gardens and a huge open field with fire pit. Great for kids and the family, the location is nice because you have 12 acres to yourself with few neighbors.
I enjoyed trips to the Volcano, Black Sands Beach and many other attractions in the area. It is fun to spend the evenings in the bath and then light a campfire in the field. The stars are amazing and the moon-rise is heavenly. There is nothing quite like the Hawaii Nature Retreat... - Tim
Highlights were the cozy 5 bedrooms (+2 outdoor screened beds) with cozy beds, the outdoor, heated claw-foot tub, and fresh macademia nuts. The location is quite isolated and not ideal for small kids. The national park headquarters are about 45 mins away and a decent but busy black-sand beach (Punaluu) is 20 mins away. This beach is not your secluded, tropical dream but it does have sea turtles and humpback whales. There are no wonderful amenities close by. But the quiet plantation roads provide excellent jogging and the neighbour sells eggs and coffee! There are roosters and barking dogs but they are a little ways off and aren't terribly loud. The kitchen is decent, the snorkel gear is limited. If these aren't important, its not a big deal. We had a really wonderful stay. I suggest 2 or 3 nights here and then on to a better beach area.
This is an amazing property that feels welcoming as soon as you arrive. The old plantation house has a ton of character. Lots of rooms and spaces to stretch out and enjoy the sights and sounds of the birds. There are many touristy things to do that are close, but we found the quiet tranquility of Wood valley difficult to leave. The property had everything we needed to make out stay comfortable. The bath house was the icing on the cake. We had all kinds of different weather, from cold rain to hot sun. The beautiful sunrises and cool mornings may have been our favorite time of day.
We stayed here for 5 days for our tour of the east coast of the Big Island. This house is wonderful. It is secluded in an amazing setting 6 miles up the hill from Rte 11. It really is a place where you can relax and get away from civilization. There is separate room from the house that is almost like camping. There is a half bath inside and a full bath outside. The outside bath is enclosed with an shower that is open on one side and a bath tub on the deck. We LOVED it. When we arrived we were so happily surprised that it was a special as the pictures showed.
This is a house that you will be driving alot if plan on going out. It is 30 minutes from Volcano and 20 minutes from Na'alehu so if you want to eat out, you should do it while you are out of be sure to shop for dinner materials in Hilo (1 hours) or Kona (2 hours). The good thing about not staying near Volcano is that Pahala is drier. I did not want to have rain all of the time and like I expected, Hilo and Volcano were far rainier than Pahala. We went to the national park for a day, the next day we took a helicopter tour and then toured the waterfalls near Hilo (Rainbow and Akaka). The last day we went South to Black Sand Beach of Punulu'u and then the Green Sand beach and to South Point. Definitely go to all three. At the Green Sand beach parking area you will be greeted by locals who will take you to the beach for $15/pp. Or walk the three miles and take a ride back ($10/pp). This house is great for touring the east side of the island, but the Big Island is big - you will drive a lot to tour the island no matter where you stay (Kohala coast or Hilo side). Many people don't realize this - so this house is a great place to stay if wanting to visit volcanoes and south point areas. The night sky is amazing as well. this is a DARK site! Thank you so much Sandra!
I was blessed with a stay here in January. It is a sanctuary for your heart, mind and soul!! The scenery is spectacular and the way the home is nestled in the lush acreage makes it feel like you're in a set for a fairy tale! And then there is Sandy, a gracious and generous woman, whom you know will be a lifelong friend. Did I mention she is happy to share the bounty of her fruit trees?!? I cannot wait to return one day!
Myself, husband & 4 kids stayed at the Nature Retreat during a sudden trip we had to make to Hawaii. Since our stay included over Christmas, all properties that were closer to Naalehu were already booked and we lucked out with the Nature Retreat in Wood Valley because it had originally been booked, but they cancelled short notice. The very first thing I noticed about Hawaii is just how nice everyone is there, and Sandra (the owner) is exceptionally wonderful! Sandra went far and above to make our stay as comfortable as possible. The outdoor shower/bath house is just amazing, all of the beds were comfortable as can be, and her home & property brought some much needed tranquility to our lives during a very sad time. I would recommend anyone who is interested in really truly feeling Hawaii's uniqueness to stay in this historical home, as it just adds to the experience. I just want to tell Sandra again- "Thank you for all that you did for us, it was truly appreciated!"
Very peaceful spot and so relaxing, both the house and the gardens, the minute we walked in the door. We also didn't come close to turning on the TV and being a group of adults found the house to be plenty spacious for us all - no tripping over each other and lots of wonderful laughs. So neat to be able to all sit for dinner around the spacious table. Sandra is just lovely, made us feel really welcome and we enjoyed a fire pit night - sharing stories under the stars. Mahalo Sandra!
Scuba diving, Buddhist chants at temple 1 mile away, cliff diving into turquoise ocean at South Point 45 minutes, See the Awesome Milky Way without any light pollution. Diversity of plants, birds and flowers.
