About the property

1 Bedr, 1 Livingr, 1 Kich, 1 Bathr, (Sleeps 4+1), Wifi, Ac, Sat.tv, Full opt

This 'apartment' is really an independent house (dates from the 17th century), with separate entrance. Its exterior and interior were recently restored, with care taken to conserve its original characteristics. The home is sited in a corner of Campo San Barnaba, one of the most suggestive and picturesque place of Venice, in the artist quarter, near Accademia.

Our apartment is really one minute from the vaporetto stop of Cà Rezzonico (sited in the 'centre' of Canal Grande in front of Palazzo Grassi, near the Accademia bridge), from which you can reach both Rialto and San Marco in around five minutes. The quarter offers cultural activities and characteristic spots that also stay open late in the evening. At the same time, it is a tranquil and relaxing place, without the usual bustle of tourists.

The house, very nice as I told above, and well lighted, consists of two floors. The first floor includes the entrance, the kitchen/dining area and a bathroom with shower. The second floor offers a living room with a comfortable double bed sofa and television with a satellite connection and a master sleeping room (with one double bed and one single small for child, so there are five bed places). The house has an independent heating system for winter and an air conditioning system for summer.

The kitchen is well equipped with new appliance: gas stove, a large refrigerator, a microwave oven and grill, dishwasher, and washing machine. In the living room and in the bedroom there are two large closet, a work desk.

The house has it's own telephone and an ADSL (high speed) internet line with a Wi-fi router.

Charming Apartment in Excellent Location

  • 4 of 5

My husband and I traveled to Venice for our honeymoon, and were looking for a centrally located apartment for our home base. The apartment is wonderfully located, just steps away from the Campo San Barnaba, about a 2 minute walk to the Ca' Rezzonico vaporetto stop, and 10 minutes to the Accademia Bridge. While close to many restaurants and shops, the apartment is quiet because it is tucked down a small alley.

We were met at the vaporetto stop by a nice woman named Elena, and escorted to the apartment. She did a great job explaining how things worked, and where they could be found. We felt the property was very much as advertised. The kitchen was well if sparsely furnished for cooking, and had everything we needed for making breakfasts and lunches.

Our only complaint about the apartment was that in order to make a king-sized bed they pushed together two twin-sized bed frames. We have stayed at hotels where this was done before, but usually the mattresses are secured together in such a way that they do not separate. Unfortunately, in this case the mattresses would work themselves apart, and if we wanted to hold each other during the night, one of us ended up sleeping in the crack. Perhaps a mattress topper with a snugly fitting mattress pad could solve the problem?

Oh, and to address a recent previous review I read about bed bugs. There are not bed bugs, the linens were very clean. There are mosquitoes. Although we were there the first week in November, it hadn't yet been cold enough to freeze them. For those that do not know the history of Venice, it is built upon an estuary, or marsh. Therefor it is to be expected that when you stay in a place without window screens, like this one, there will be the occasional mosquito. We each received a couple of bites on our exposed bits while sleeping, but nothing a little cortizone cream didn't fix.

Overall, we had a very nice stay, and would recommend the property to others.

Lovely location, missing some comforts

  • 3 of 5

We were totally pleased with the location of the house and with the greeting at the vaporetto stop Ca Rezzonico by Elena who came instead of Mirco. She was a little unfamiliar with the house but showed us around. Around the corner from Campo San Barnaba there were ample options for groceries and restaurants within short distance. We especially liked the floating vegetable market. As far as the house was concerned, it is very charming and has been renovated since it is quite old. The small kitchen and small bathroom are on the main level and the sitting room and bedroom are on the second floor up stone steps with a very sturdy hand rail. Probably this suits one couple with children better than two couples. It was convenient to have good Wifi, a washing machine and a large fridge with a four burner gas stove top (no oven). We had everything we needed to prepare meals. The kitchen is very small and so only one of us could cook and the table that seats 4 people is also small. We had to juggle with use of the space and it would be very tight for 4 adults.

Upstairs we found the rooms were tastefully decorated and we chose not to have the windows open to invite mosquitos; however we did have some buzzing about every night. They were not the most problematic however. Each night we were bitten under the covers by something that we could not identify. Because we had made the booking with Antonio we communicated with him and he did point out there is a mosquito killing machine that we used on our last night. We did not notice any mosquitos that night.

Unfortunately, we continued to suffer numerous bites and left each with over 2 dozen very itchy red raised bites; at a local pharmacy we were advised to apply cortisone cream. We carefully checked the pillows and bedding but could not see any evidence of bed bugs; however several days since leaving Venice, we are continuing to experience quite a bit of discomfort from these bites. We thought it would be important to mention, in case anyone else experiences a similar problem.

Had we not had insect bites, we would have had a much more pleasant time overall. We did experience the homeless man sleeping on the steps several nights - roughly 3 of 6 nights and communicated with Antonio about this. The neighbours are well aware and I think they communicated with him each morning; only on one morning was he shouting loudly. He was gone by the time we left the house each day.

Charming Independent House in the Artist's Quarter

  • 5 of 5

We stayed for 5 nights and Dorsoduro was a great location for sightseeing in Venice. Antonio met us in the square and took us to the house. He was very gracious and gave us tips on where to eat in Campo San Barnaba. We had everything we needed and it was helpful to have a washing machine since this was the midpoint of our trip.

We had a lovely time, walking the streets of Venice, shopping, visiting churches, museums, and anything that piqued our interest. We also attended a few classical music performances and enjoyed eating at the local restaurants. We had the opportunity of seeing how Venetians celebrate Halloween - the children were dressed in typical Halloween costumes and the shops gave treats to the children. Venice and the house were delightful.

Live like a Venetian in a perfect location!

  • 5 of 5

Antonio's house in the Dorsoduro was the perfect location for our stay in Venice. Literally just a few steps away from Campo San Barnaba (where Katharine Hepburn famously fell in the canal in "Summertime"), we were able to do all the sightseeing we wanted during the day, then leave the throngs of tourists behind and enjoy a beautiful, quiet, Venetian neighborhood. Please note, "quiet" does not mean "boring." Rather, once the day began winding down, Campo San Barnaba would hum with Venetian life: locals enjoying an after-work glass of wine while their kids played nearby, people buying their groceries or walking their dog...very charming and lively, but decidedly not touristy.

A little boat moored in the Rio San Barnaba sold beautiful, fresh produce at extremely reasonable prices, and the supermarket just over the bridge in Campo Santa Margherita was also super convenient and affordable. We had many simple and delicious meals in the well-appointed kitchen.

The beds were comfortable, the bathroom was nice, and we loved coming home to our little Venice house every day. The wifi was very fast and the A/C in the bedroom kept us nice and cool, which was excellent, considering that it was very hot in Venice during our stay.

We ate a memorable dinner at Ai Quattro Feri, just around the corner from the apartment. Fresher-than-fresh seafood in a lovely setting. We also had a wonderful meal at Taverna San Trovaso, too, just a stone's throw from the apartment, near the Pensione Accademia. During the day, we'd stop into Cantina Gia' Schiavi for utterly delicious cicheti. We also ate gelato daily at Gelateria al Doge (in Campo Santa Margherita). I know this isn't really supposed to be a food review, but I mention all of these places to convey that there is an abundance of fantastic, quintessentially Venetian food right nearby.

The apartment is also very near the Accademia bridge, as well as the vaporetto #1 & 2 stop, so it's very convenient.

Dylan & Mirco handled check-in and communications, which was slightly confusing at first, as our prior communications had been through Antonio. They were both pleasant and helpful, with Dylan providing a very informative and thorough walk-through of the house during our check-in.

This was my 6th trip to Venice; I love this magical city and hope to return in the near future...I would recommend this house to anyone planning to visit, and hope to stay there again myself someday!

Clean, well supplied, great location

  • 3 of 5

Clean, well supplied and great location just off Campo San Barnaba. Lots of great restaurants nearby, supermarket in the neighborhood, and 200 yards from Ca Rezzonico vepparetto stop.

Kitchen not air conditioned but upstairs was good. Could use a table and chair in living room.

Initial disaster when our connection picked up other tourists by mistake and left us waiting at the vaparetto stop for 20+ minutes was not an optimum start.

A good economical choice in Doroduso!

Dorsoduro interesting experience

  • 3 of 5

The apartment was nice enough, with good facilities and in a lovely area within easy walking distance of many of the iconic tourist attractions. What we found very off-putting was the person who used the front step to sleep on and leave an unsavoury mess each morning, which we had to step over. We realise that this is a difficult situation but it was a bit unnerving. Overall our experience in Venice was very enjoyable.

Owner's Response: Dear Andrew, thanks for your kind review. I am sorry about the person who, for the period of your stay, slept outside your door. We finally got the police intervention and definitely solved the problem. My best regards Mirco
