The Nut House for Tranquility, Solitude and Relaxation

Newland Cabin Rental Photos and Description

Cabin, 3 Bedrooms + Den, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

Built in 2004 by three friends who needed a place to get away from all the hassle and fast pace of the real world. When we just can't take it anymore we go to the NUT HOUSE to regain our mental wellness. Now we are willing to share this get-away with you.

The original cabin dated back over two hundred years. We replaced it with a new, three bedroom real log cabin with a metal roof in 2004. We figured whoever built here had their pick of the mountain and picked this spot. We believe this spot was chosen because of the breezes in the summer and the view of Grandfather and Beach Mountain in the distance, and of course the availability of well water.

The cabin elevation is 4,000 feet above sea level, delivering the cool summer days you are seeking - usually 60 degrees in the AM and 70 degrees in the afternoon in August. The roads are good and easy to travel even in snow. What we like about Montezuma is the central location to everything. Skiing, fishing, horseback riding, ESEEOLA LODGE FOR WEDDINGS, golf and my favorite (THE RESTAURANTS), all good and close by within 5-15 minutes.

My personal favorites are the Tartan Restaurant five minutes away for a home cooked Scottish theme breakfast, then over to Uncle Lee's BBQ and Old Country Store, four minutes away for a great BBQ lunch and sometimes live blue grass music on weekends. For dinner down the mountain, 1.3 miles to the Best Cellar Restaurant for fine dining. It's next door to the spa, also a favorite stop for me.

11 Minutes to Sugar Mountain Ski Resort

1.3 miles to the River Dog Cafe/Coffee House for Wi-Fi internet connections for those who must stay in touch with the outside world.

We have three bedrooms and two baths. The master has a queen bed. The front room has two singles and the third bedroom also has a queen. There are two big sofas that sleep quite well.

We are a two hour easy drive form Charlotte, NC or Spartanburg, SC. Newland, NC is eight minutes away and is the county seat for Avery County.

The Nut House

  • 5 of 5

My family stayed at the Nut House for our niece's wedding. The house was fantastic. Property was clean and well maintained. Owner very helpful in answering questions/concerns we had. We were 5 minutes from the Esceeola Lodge which was convenient for us since the reception was at the lodge. Not a problem, but there are several abandoned trailers/small buildings that are around the property. And, there are local dogs (which we knew about before we got there) that not only greeted us but stayed on the porch--a black lab type dog, and a chubby hound dog. We named them "Blackdog" and "Chubs". Overall the house was GREAT and we would stay there again. And, would recommend to friends.

A great place for a getaway

  • 4 of 5

We really enjoyed the Nuthouse during our stay for the Highland Games. The proximity to Linville, Grandfather Mountain and surrounding attractions is convenient, but a little removed from the highway. The appointments on the inside of the cabin are beautiful, with nice furniture, wonderful kitchen and comfortable beds and sheets. Lots of room to spread out and two patios to enjoy. Other than a few light bulbs needing replaced, I wouldn't change a thing about the interior.

The views and surroundings are less fantastic. There is one nice view of the mountains, but the houses near the property are trailers/modular homes that need work and prevent you from wanting to look out your side windows. Just a little too close for comfort. The yard needed landscaping and a good mowing when we arrived, but might have been because of all the wet weather they have had up there. Overall, the outside didn't meet up to the inside, but since we were gone most of the days, it didn't interfere with our trip.

The owners obviously enjoy their property and take pride in the decorations. They were very easy to deal with and quickly answered any questions we sent them. I'd have liked to see more detailed instructions about trash disposal, and checking out procedures , as well as maybe a booklet or folder of information about local restaurants, attractions and recommendations.

The price was very fair and I feel there was value in the rental. I'd consider it again for the same sort of stay, and even enjoy a winter getaway up there sometime.

Late Spring

  • 3 of 5

The cabin is very nice, the trailers around it, not a pleasant sight. We had a nice week. There are a few problems like: the back bedroom lacks heat, the TV and fireplace did not work and the water heaters could not keep up with more than one person having a shower, the person following took a tepid shower. We had been warned about the dogs and our youngest girl found them charming so it made the stay priceless for us.

Beautiful Cabin

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed at the Nut House recently and had a blast! The cabin is clean, modern, and in a very relaxing setting. It is also very convenient to many activities in the area. Our preference is not for a resort-type setting, but rather for a more low-key, out-of-the-way spot and this fit the bill, while being very well-located in the area. I have traveled to western North Carolina since I was a kid, and this cabin is a great spot in a wonderful part of the country. I would highly recommend it and my family will be returning in the near future. Oh, and the neighborhood dogs added to the atmosphere for us. They were really friendly and gentle with my 7 and 5 year-old. If you are headed to this area, this cabin would be a really relaxing and fun place to stay.

Great cabin...I miss it already!

  • 5 of 5

I agree with the positive statements in the other reviews...close to everything, modern and comfortable cabin, nice views, etc. Something that I don't remember mentioned before but that I think is important to share is that many dogs run free in this neighborhood. This cabin is nicer than most of the surrounding homes and trailers and I suspect these dogs are outdoors most (if not all) of the year. If you have children who are afraid of dogs, this is not the house for you. As many as 7 at a time bark and chase your car as you drive up the hill. They are all friendly dogs; some like to be petted and some are skiddish but none are mean or dangerous. We never fed them but there were usually one or two on the back porch during the day. We stayed 7 nights and 3 of the nights we were woken by barking dogs when other people would drive to their homes late at night, and one night we were up from 2-3:30 am when one dog would not stop barking right outside our cabin. We assume a rabbit or something must have caught his attention. We are both veterinarians and have four pet dogs at home so it was not upsetting to our kids, but again I thought it should be shared. I still rate this an excellent property and plan to rent it again in the future. We had a great trip!

Golf Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Myself and two buddies came for a long weekend of golf, and enjoyed it very much. Golf courses, and restaurants were all easy to get to. The cabin was excellent shape. Plenty to do off the golf course with shopping, site seeing, and just plain relaxing. I loved the front deck. The owners take pride in their "little piece of heaven", because everything is well kept!
