Puerto Morelos has been designated National Reef Park because of it's efforts to preserve the largest barrier reef in the western hemisphere and the second largest in the world. Jacques Cousteau referred to this stretch of the Caribbean as having 'Gin Clear Water'. This world famous reef is just 500 meters from shore. You can walk to the nearby restaurants, central plaza, pharmacy, and grocery store. We are 4 blocks from the main square.
The Crococoon Zoo and famous Botanical Gardens are merely a ten-minute taxi drive from the Mermaid. The exciting nightlife and shopping in the Cancun Hotel Zone and Playa del Carmen are both about 30 minutes away. Also close by is the large city of Cancun, where you can experience the real Mexico and it's limitless shopping opportunities. Puerto Morelos is the gateway to the Mayan Riviera where it's possible to satisfy the Indiana Jones in you at many ancient Mayan archeology sites. These Mexican treasures include Chichen Itza, Tulum, El Rey, Coba, Muyil, and Uxmal just to mention a few. All along the Riviera Maya are the beautiful Cenotes where picnicking, snorkeling, diving, and nature walks are a special and unique experience for the foreign tourist and native Mexican alike.
There are also several large Eco Parks which are magical places to learn about local flora, fauna, and ancient and mysterious cultures -- or just plain relax in the tropical climate under a coconut palm with your favorite refreshment in hand. There is so much to see, experience, and learn about that you will want to return again and again. Our goal and mission at The Mermaid is to have every guest return home with stories of wonder and adventure, proclaiming it to be their best vacation ever.

My favorite thing to do is 'go on vacation'. The way that I have found to always 'go on vacation is to own the vacation Home.
Jeannie purchased this house in 2003
The very first time I arrived in Puerto Morelos, I knew I would soon live here. I love the quaintness of the town, the charm of the people, the closeness of a small community where everyone helps everyone. Its like living on an Island.
Some of my favorite things in Puerto Morelos at Casa Mermaid is the beach and the pool, outstanding. The snorkeling at the reef or just along the shore, crystal clear water of the Caribbean Coast. I love to go to town on Wed morning when the fresh produce street market is open. I get to see friends new and old and I bet to buy all organic veggies, home made fresh cheese & herbs. Then every day but Sunday the fishing boats come in at 3PM, you can go right to the pier and purchase a fish, they will clean and filet it for you, and they always have a recipe for you.You must check out THE LITTLE MEXICAN COOKING SCHOOL just 2 doors down. Cat the Owner has the cutest Gift Shop and SUNDAY BRUNCH is excellent . You may need reservations. There are so many great things to do I never run out of new places and things to explore. In winter there is a different Festival in the square every weekend. One more thing I love, Full Moon Bonfire on the Beach. You have to find it, it keeps moving, but it is there all night long!!
We went to Puerto Morelos in December and it was one of the best
vacations we have ever had as a family. We were 5 adults and 3
children, (ages 4,5, & 8). We had plenty of space. My husband and I
had the one of the king bedrooms (with a bathroom across from it) on
the main floor, our two children shared the other king bedroom on the
main floor (with an ensuite). Our friends had the upstairs bedrooms
which both had ensuite bathrooms so everyone had their own private
bathroom. The veranda on the top floor provided and unobstructed view
of the beach. We had breakfast there every morning and watched the
beach. What a wonderful way to start the day.
The kitchen is fully equipped with everything you can imagine (yes, a
dishwasher). The only thing we brought was our stove top espresso
machine and food. Travelling with kids we have found it is always
better to have things you know they will eat. We all sat together for
each meal. I think you will have space. The local restaurants were
great also. We loved all of them. In the evenings alot of the
children would gather in the town square and play soccer or simply
play in the playground.
There was no road noise. The town basically shuts down around 10:00pm
and before that there isn't much going on. Perfect for families with
We loved the fact that we had our own private accommodation with a
pool. No sharing with anyone. The kids would get up each day and go
swimming (as soon as I could get some cheerios in them) for hours it
seemed. We also went swimming after dinner on some evenings!! I highly
recommend that you take life vests for the kids. We felt better
knowing that if for any reason they slipped into the pool, they were
safe. Jimmy, the caretaker, came every day to see that the pool was
running smoothly. He was also a great resource and very friendly.
We loved the town and have recommended Casa Mermaid to all of our
friends!!! It isn't a luxurious hotel, but more of a family home.
There was even videos for the kids to watch, which surprisingly did
come in handy. They loved the Little Rascals!!! If your looking for a
more quiet off the beaten path sort of vacation then this is the place
for you. There were plenty of towels which was great. Jeannie even let
us use her computer to check email etc. We used is everyday. It came
in very handy when we wanted to do research for day trips. There were
alot of travel books in the living room as well magazines a
We had the best vacation of our lives. Our children
are still talking about it 9 months later!! Jimmy was
wonderful and very helpful. Casa Mermaid was
clean, and very well kept. Being across the street
from the beach with an unobstructed view was
great. We can't wait to come back.
We had a wonderful stay at Casa Mermaid. This is not the newest or fanciest house in the area, but it is very well-stocked, comfortable, and well laid out for a group. We had 8 adults and one child and never felt crowded. The beds were great, a/c was cold, and the kitchen had everything you could possibly need. The upstairs bedrooms have 2 queen or double beds (they felt like doubles) and a small fridge. This worked really well for my family of 3, as our 4 year old could have some snacks and juice in the morning while we were getting up and moving. The downstairs bedrooms have king beds. We loved the pool and the large table outside next to the pool- our group hung out there a lot. Juan was a fantastic caretaker and Jeannie always responded to our questions. Finally, the location can't be beat- one block to the beach, 5-10 min stroll to town, yet quiet and peaceful. We wouldn't hesitate to stay here again. This house is a great option for a group looking for a comfortable, economical vacation.
After my initial review, the property owner contacted me and assured me that she is continously seeking ways to improve the clients' experince.
She provided me with a detailed list of the property improvements that she has done so far or is palnning to do in the near future. I am satisfied with her response and will gladly return to her property for another vacation.
The house is approximately 100 yards away from the beach-
the pool is well maintained and is a plus for familes with kids- Gorgeous View- Aircondition was efficient Cons: The house is not well maintained (some door hinges and doors were broken, construction material and broken glasses were on one corner of the front yard)- The house had been cleaned only minimally (dust and cooking oil residue on the kitchenware and some furniture)... The owner is either very busy or does not take pride of her rental property...During our week long stay nobody from the management came and asked whether we need anything or asked for our feedback
My multi-generational family spent a week at Casa Mermaid. We experienced a tropical storm but the house is so comfortable and has so many different living areas, it never felt crowded. We liked the view from the upstairs deck and ate there most meals.
The house is clean and the pool is lovely. The enclosed front yard felt safe and secluded. The beach is across the street through an empty lot, but very close.
We walked to the town square every day and ate out most dinners.
Don't miss Tacos.com on Rojo Gomez, El Pesquero (excellent!) or Al Chimichurri (crowded but fun)
After much research, I chose Casa Mermaid as a one week vacation rental for my family (8 of us ranging in ages from 27 to 62). The small, peaceful town was very welcoming after day trips to Cancun and Playa Del Carmen. Puerto Morelos is a place that you can really relax. The house is located on a quiet street within walking distance to the beach and everything in the town.
The house is clean with high quality, mostly imported furnishings. Tasteful decorations give it a comfortable, homey feel. The kitchen is impressively stocked with any appliance or utensil you might need. We especially enjoyed the breeze and ocean view while sitting around the large table on the balcony.
The owner was very attentive and clearly keeps the property well maintained. The online description is accurate. I would definitely recommend this rental to friends and family. All 8 of us really enjoyed our stay at Casa Mermaid.
Thank you for providing such a great place!

We have a bus called 'Colectivo' you can get just at the corner of our street for 15 cents. it will take you all around town and to the main entrance of our town and into the Colonia on the opposite side of the highway 307
