Hale Moana : Boutique Retreat : Short Stroll to Kailua Beach

Bedrooms Studio
Space 750 sq. ft.
Property type studio
Minimum Stay 5 nights

About the property

Spacious 1 bedroom, 1 bath, Sleeps 2. Close to beach.

Hale Moana is a Non-Smoking studio nestled beneath two lovely shade trees with a 'treehouse' view. Our studio is cooled by refreshing island tradewinds and by the shade from our Monkeypod and Tamarind Trees.

Hale Moana has interior teak and bamboo furnishings which rest on a cool, quartzite slate tile floor. Private parking & entry to a 750+ square foot studio and lanai. The interior also has a vaulted ceiling with skylights and plenty of light throughout. Gas two-burner cooking inside and a gas BBQ grill outside. 39' TV. Wifi - password provided.

Once settled in at Hale Moana, you will be a few delightfully sandy paces to beautiful Kailua Bay and Kalama Beach with views of Flat island, the Mokulua islands (Moku Nui and Moku Iki), outer islands (sometimes Molokai and Maui are visible in the distance) and wonderful sunrises too on our East facing, windward side of the island. Listen to the birds, ocean and breezes...

Many happy visits and repeats. Aloha for now!

Booking directly with me will save you a little on HomeAway/VRBO service/CC/reservation fees. If you wish to pay via CC, these fees will be charged by HA/VRBO.

Feb. 2016: A new law is in effect as of January 2016 which gives the city more manpower to stop vacation rentals operating without permits. There have been no permits issued since 1989. I am the owner/operator of a short and long term rental (mostly short term) - of an attached unit - at my home. I have run this small business for about 14 years with a desire that the city open up the permitting process to me and those like me. This new law is a serious push to shut down vacation rentals on Oahu; it remains to be seen how things shake out over the coming months with the City's enforcement, property visits, cease and desist letters and groups and individuals reporting to the City on rentals.

Update, late March 2016: Those opposed to the actions of the C&C of Honolulu regarding short term rentals have hired a law firm which is requesting the C&C stop their aggressive actions against short term rentals on Oahu.

Feb. 2017: Ongoing issues with B&B's/short term rentals/transient accommodations in the City and County of Honolulu. The C&C has issued my rental business a new tax ID number and continues to accept my tax payments. My visitors continue to enjoy and return to my Hale Moana.

About Aloha and mahalo for your inquiry/booking!

Aloha - FYI; If you will be renting a car, I'd recommend NOT getting a bright red or yellow model of car, especially hotrod/muscle types or Jeeps. Those cars are fine and fun - just choose a more low-key color, if you can.

Aloha and mahalo for your inquiry/booking! purchased this studio in 1939

Why Aloha and mahalo for your inquiry/booking! chose Kailua

This home was built for our tutu, Moana, in 1939-40; it was one of the first houses in the neighborhood, when the streets were paved with crushed coral. Moana married and moved to Kailua, from Waikiki, to raise a family of three. The older generation remained in Waikiki, in the family home there, until the mid '50's. We built onto the main house in 2003 to create what is now our studio, Hale Moana. We hope you enjoy the space we've created as much as our guests, friends and family members do.

What makes this studio unique

This spot in Kailua is close to the beach and just far enough away from Kailua Town to be the perfect jumping off point for an island excursion, a lazy day down the access path to the center of Kailua Bay or for enjoying the happy bustle of Kailua Town with its shops, food and activities.

Guestbook comments from the owner

"Mahalo nui. We loved EVERY MINUTE of our stay in your guest studio. May Kailua remain free of hotel chains and resorts! People here are so friendly, treat us like old friends. We must come back again someday! Aloha."

Kailua Community Center pool nearby. Private washer and dryer on studio lanai. (FYI and sorry to say...) Recommend to avoid bright red or yellow rental cars. These are more attractive to thieves already on the lookout for rental cars/visitors to target.

Lovely stay in Kailua Town

  • 5 of 5

This place is pretty close to perfect, it's clean and comfortable. The beach is a minute walk away and Kailua is away from the hustle and bustle of Honolulu but not so far that it's a long drive. I would stay here again.

Just like the other past reviewers, I want to keep this gem all to ourselves! I couldn't have asked for more on our 5 nights in Hale Moana. Jennifer is such a gracious and thoughtful host. She welcomed us with fresh flowers in the home, a personalized note and an entire folder filled with information for local restaurants, shops, activities, etc. She even left Hawaiian postcards with stamps to send out to our family and loved ones. Let's just say, she thought of it all. The home was filled with all the daily essentials and more. From extra sheets and blankets, to a laundry basket, beach towels, and all kinds of beach equipment that we used daily (snorkeling gear, boogie boards, beach chairs, beach umbrella, football, sunblock, and bug spray). The location of this place is spot on, literally 1 block from the best beach in Oahu. Easy access, great parking spot right next to the entrance of the home and even a swing to play on. Hale moana also had a secluded patio space with a BBQ grill that we used regularly. From the patio, you can access the shower and bathroom. I loved that shower! Perfect after a long day at the beach. I cannot say enough great things about this place and Jennifer. She communicated via text and was able to answer any questions we had and also provided great tips for some of the hikes we planned to do. My husband and I have rented places in Cuba, Costa Rica, Utah, Mammoth, Tahoe and I must say this by far was one of the best experiences we have had. We didn't want to leave and definitely can't wait to visit Hale Moana again! Mahalo, Jennifer!

Perfect for 2 people, steps from the beach

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent a blissful week at Hale Moana. Jennifer has done a wonderful job making this sweet little place comfy and cozy. It is nicely furnished, the kitchen has everything a vacationing couple needs, and the bathroom is delightful. It has an open shower, so you feel like you are taking an outdoor shower. The shower is well designed so the rest of the bathroom does not get flooded with water (this can be a problem with open showers) - a perfect way to end your day. Hale Moana is also squeaky clean! It is perfectly located - a two-minute walk to Kailua Beach. The beach is literally across the street. It is a short car or bike ride to Kailua Town, where all the action is. Hale Moana is located on a quiet street with only the birds' songs to wake you in the morning. Jennifer is a wonderful, respectful host who is as available as you want or need. She has two binders full of information about the area, restaurants, and activities. We found this very helpful.

I can't recommend Hale Moana highly enough. We are already planning our next trip back! Thank you, Jennifer for creating such a lovely spot!

Perfect place!

  • 5 of 5

I want to write this review but the selfish part of me doesn't because I'd like Hale Moana to remain my little secret. lol From my first communication, I had a great feeling. Jennifer was quick to respond and very informative and helpful with booking. Upon my arrival, I got to meet her and talk story as she finished putting the finishing touches together. The accommodation was gorgeous and spacious and felt like being in a treehouse! All matching furniture, beautiful slate flooring, plumeria blossoms everywhere. It's a quiet environment, convenient to everything Kailua has to offer without being too close to all the touristy traffic and congestion and just a few houses away from the best body boarding beach in Kailua. It had everything I needed for cooking and beach activities and ample parking. I lived in Kailua for 25 years and this was my first visit back in 5 years. As a past "local", I can highly recommend Hale Moana and plan to return frequently! Thank you for a lovely stay, Jennifer. A hui hou!

Car: recommended

Kailua - windward side of Oahu. Nicely situated, beautiful town and ocean. Between Waimanalo and Kaneohe. Main roads in and out are Kamehameha Highway ('circle island' route, 'beach road'), Pali Highway (Kailua to Honolulu/Waikiki) and H3 Highway (Kailua to Pearl Harbor).

My Hale Moana is just up from the Kalama Beach Club and Kalama Beach Park, cross the "beach road", walk the sandy access path and you are at the center of Kailua Bay; a three mile stretch of one of the "best beaches in the U.S.".

Other Activities: boating, basketball court, shopping, kayaking, wildlife viewing, spa, miniature golf
