We had a wonderful time in the Black Pearl. We were positively surprised when we saw that it looks even better than on the photos.
The bungalow is a dream come true. The terrace is awesome, overlooking the lagoon and you just want to keep on watching what is going on over and under the water ;-)
If you are looking for relax away from the big resorts on Bora Bora this is the perfect place to go.
We hope to come back one day!

We stayed 5 nights at the Black Pearl in late January. The stay was supposed to be 6 nights but a massive storm in Tahiti closed the airport for a day. The Black Pearl is an exceptional property. We greatly enjoyed our stay and cooked on the grill most nights. The snorkeling right off the deck is excellent and is easy to get in and out of the water. Renting a car is essential and Nir will take care of this. The cars are small but adequate. There is only one road that circles Bora Bora and the circle drive takes a little more than hour.
If we return to Bora Bora we would certainly stay at the Black Pearl again. This is much better than an over water resort room at way lower prices plus you can cook your own meals.
The Black Pearl is a beautiful, well-maintained and well-equipped overwater bungalow. We were very pleased with our time here and highly recommend it to others considering a trip to the islands of Tahiti.
Having owned waterfront properties in Hawaii and Florida, we are familiar with the maintenance challenges created by salt water environments. The Hollands are obviously dedicated to keeping this home well maintained. Although the home is not new, the appliances, electronic gadgets and painted services are all functional, fresh and new looking. The decorating scheme is peaceful, welcoming and appropriate for this beautiful island setting.
Their on-Island property manager, Nir, was very friendly and likable. Prior to our arrival, he quickly responded to each of our emails explaining the details of where we would meet him after our arrival on Bora Bora. He met us on the dock-on time-with a rental car and a big sincere smile. He gave us a loaner cell phone with his phone number, explaining that we should feel free to call him in case of emergency or if we needed help or answers to questions. Having Nir's availability was very comforting since English speakers are not always easily found here.
While on island, we noted there are two general categories of tourists: 1) Those who feel uncomfortable without direct input from tour guides & schedules for locations to see & events to attend. 2) Those who consider themselves more independent & adventuresome, who prefer going their own way and exploring without a lot of scheduling.
The Black Pearl is a perfect choice for this latter category of traveler. Its location on the north end of the island is not only beautiful, but very quiet. The few people we encountered were mostly natives (who were sweet/friendly/welcoming) with a smattering of other like minded tourists. The car rental (from Nir) is a necessity, since town is a 15 minute drive to the south. Each day we cruised around the island enjoying the beauty. We would include trips to one of the excellent restaurants as well as a shopping trip to Chen Lee's or SUPER U for our evening sashimi/sushi & beverages.
The worst thing about staying at the Black Pearl in Bora-Bora was... having to leave-we miss it already. What a lovely life experience this past two weeks has been!
We stayed for four nights and it was a great alternative to being trapped at a hotel. The owner, Richard, was very helpful with all of the recommendations and advice before our visit and Nir was a great host when we arrived. We also rented the car through Nir and highly recommend you do the same. The bungalow was very clean and perfectly arranged. The kitchen was fully equipped and we were able to have some meals at "home" which was a big savings. If you're looking for great snorkeling, plan to swim out a bit north or south from the bungalow and also take a trip with Pure Snorkel. There are lots of stray dogs in the entire island and we're hopeful spay and neuter programs will help with this long term.
My husband and I chose Bora Bora for our 20th wedding anniversary vacation. We chose The Black Pearl because we love larger spaces and good values. We could not have been happier. There is so much usable space, both indoor and outdoor. The shower is fabulous! Hot water and fantastic water pressure, something we don't always get in the Caribbean. We enjoyed lying in the loungers in the shade with the wind keeping us cool. The snorkeling off the deck was great fun, and watching all the boat traffic was entertaining. The best snorkeling, by far, was the Romantic Tour we took out to swim with the sharks and feed the rays. We were lucky enough to jump in with a Manta ray too! We spent most mornings on Mateira Beach, which you drive too, it's a beautiful spot. You absolutely need a car and the manager Nir rented one to us. He met us at the shuttle boat, gave us the keys to the villa, we dropped him back at his house and we were off on our own. The whole process probably took 20 minutes. Nir was incredibly helpful and was available and willing to make any reservations we needed, including a day trip to a Motu where lunch was included. I recommend that as well. We visited Bloody Mary's and the MaiKai Marina and the Bora Bora Yacht club and one of the resorts casual restaurants for dinner. The food on Bora Bora is not why you visit. The Tuna Sashimi was usually good, most of the fish dishes were pretty good, the beef and chicken were hit or miss, but none of it was great. The pizza I had at the resort (think it was the Intercontinental) was good. We also did a food truck for lunch one day and a snack place in town. The snack shacks on Mateira were ok too. We would definitely stay here again , if we were to make it back to that island.
I discovered the Black Pearl nearly 2 years ago when researching for our 30th wedding anniversary, and 10 days in Bora Bora was our goal. I contacted Richard who reserved his home for us and kept in contact until the day arrived. Excellent customer service. Always quick responses to any question. He had good advice about our stay at the Intercontinental on Tahiti prior to Bora Bora to ease the jet lag, as well as what to see and do on Bora Bora. The property is unbelievable. 1400 sq ft of private, modern, relaxing comfort sitting over aquamarine bathwater. The pictures don't do it justice. It is beautifully decorated, with a full modern kitchen, COMFORTABLE bed, great shower, AC--all the items on the listing fit together in a very tasteful way. Coffee on the deck in the morning, feeding the fish, WiFi for emails, laying on the sundeck listening to music through the surround sound system, kayaking, RELAXING. Nir, his very nice property manager, has cars for low rent during the stay. He picks you up at dock, gets you oriented, gives you a phone and car to use, and keeps you out of trouble. Great way to get around at will, enjoy the many restaurants and all the island has to offer, instead of being stuck in one spot on an outlying island like the resorts. We spent 3 days at the I.C. in Tahiti prior to Bora Bora and 4 days at the Hilton on Moorea after Bora Bora before returning home, and our time at the Black Pearl was, by far, the highlight. We would not stay on Bora Bora any other way. We hope to return some day soon. Thank you, Richard.
James Michener called Bora Bora 'The most beautiful island in the world. And it is, it really is.
Bora Bora is one of the Society Islands in the South Pacific, Tahiti being the largest. It is only a seven and a half hour flight from Los Angeles and only three hours earlier PST. The same time zone as Hawaii. Only two hours when daylight savings time ends. To get there, you take a direct flight to Tahiti and then a 45 minute island hopper to Bora Bora. You are now officially in paradise. Use your state of the art kitchen to prepare a meal, or dine out at the many fine restaurants on the island. The activities are endless if you wish to keep busy, or just lie down on the veranda, listen to the water and finish that 1000 page book you can't seem to finish. Life takes on new meaning when you are surrounded by the serenity and the beauty of Bora Bora. Come and see for yourself!
