This 3000+ square foot 5 bedroom 3 bath residence offers gracious spaces, exceptional quality, exciting amenities and comforts for everyone. As you can see from the photos, this home is not your typical vacation rental. It has been tastefully and professionally decorated with high end new furniture and artwork. Where to start... How about the drive up and curb appeal. Dramatic is an appropriate beginning. This Spanish Contemporary has lush landscaping complete with flora of many genres. A stunning cascading water fall and pond greets the visitor. Notice the beautiful front door which is a statement all in itself. And you’ll have no trouble finding parking with space for 4 cars in the driveway plus ample space on the street.

Step inside and you have a multi-level home which is completely workable from just one level. Home boasts grand living and family spaces with views from almost every window. The living room boasts large windows which drown the space in light and ambiance. Mark, We were late returning (plane canceled) or I would have written sooner. The house worked out great for us! Everyone had a wonderful time together and the pool was excellent. The children loved it and the rafts were just terrific. The dryer was constantly going as our beach towels never got a chance to dry. I think there were plenty of dishes, glasses, etc. The grill was also great, need a new brush perhaps. The top bunk bed could use a siderail to prevent a child from rolling off. Nice touch to have some children's books there. You have done a very nice job decorating. The house was so convenient to every where we were going. Hope everything was left o'k and we are welcome to return. Beverly

Family Vacation

What a fantastic house!!! We had 8 adults and 4 kids. The location is ideal for almost anything you would want to do. We toured the Uss Midway and did a one hour harbor tour in an afternoon. We also went to the Zoo, Seaworld and Legoland all a short distance from the house. I would highly recommend to the Fish Market. The food was wonderful. We enjoyed the firepit every night we were there and the kids loved the pool. I would recomend Hawk Street to anyone wanting a spacious and beautiful place to vacation. Thanks so much for a wonderful experience!!

NOT a luxury property!

We planned this vacation for over a year and we finally picked this house based on the reviews and pictures. We had 10 people stay in the house ranging from 8 years old to 75. When we first walked in it was obvious the posted pictures on VRBO were not accurate. Everyone picked their rooms and started to get settled in. We also checked everything to make sure all the important things were working. Well the garbage disposal in the prep sink was leaking all over the kitchen floor, the ice maker in the fridge was not dispensing ice, numerous light bulbs were burnt, 2 door handles fell off and one was very loose, water knob for master shower fell off, my kids got stuck in the upstairs master bath because the rail for the pocket door was rusted, floor vent covers were rusted over, screens were torn, the molding around the doors was falling off, entertainment center was a mess and tv and blu ray player wasn't working, kitchen cabinets were greasy, silverware and dishes had caked on food, rusty kitchenware, one of the tvs in the master wasn't working, top part of bunk bed had duct tape holding it together, upstairs master bath had a funky smell that never went away, ALL the kitchen spices were very old and needed to be replaced months ago, only one of the jets worked in the hot tub, pillow had dried blood on it, entire house needs to be painted, lots of dust caked on the pictures, the carpeting was disgusting and stained. We spent the majority of the first day washing ALL the dishes, silverware, and trying to organize the kitchen. I threw away numerous utensils that were either rusty or had nasty food on it. The outdoor area is very nice and the pool was exceptional, but that being said, it'S NOT worth what we paid.

The owner did change all the bulbs, replace garbage disposal, fix the hot tub jets, door knobs, entertainment center, grill,but these are all things we did not want to have to deal with. The owner did offer us a refund, but that was not really an option because we had 10 people with us. If it was just my wife and kids we would have been out of there. This is not a luxury house like it is made out to be. It's obvious the house has had almost zero up keep and the owner doesn't appear to put much money into it(unless he has to).

Once home we did receive a one night refund,after the manager promised us a FULL REFUND.

I took multiple pictures of the house but it doesn't appear I can download them. Disappointed because the pictures tell the full story.

Owner's Response: Over the past 5 years of opening our home to the vacation rental community, we consider ourselves fortunate to have not encountered this type of group- the type of renter who seems to be looking for a free vacation. Its absolutely true there were 3 light bulbs burned out, they had pulled off 2 of the door knobs and a shower valve handle, the sink disposal was leaking, the ice maker dispenser wasn’t working and the entertainment center connections were a mess. We apologized profusely to the family for letting these slip by our staff and took care of everything within hours of their arrival. They also said the house was filthy but couldn't really point out anything in particular. I assured the renter that our cleaners do a thorough job cleaning every time we have a guest check-out, but we had our housekeeper come back to the house and spend another 3 hours cleaning (at our expense). I asked him to point out anything else he could think of and we would take care of it immediately. After several hours of trying to appease the renters, they were still dissatisfied and said "THE HOUSE NEEDS TO BE REPAINTED". That's when we realized there was nothing we could do to make them happy. We then offered the renter a full refund if they wanted to leave. His response was "No- we don't want to leave" (as he cites in his comment). We addressed every issue (within reason) they had with the house on the first day and didn't hear anything else from them for the remainder of their stay. We offered them a full refund if they left our home after the first night, but they refused. They chose to remain in our home for the duration of their reservation (11 nights) apparently under the false assumption they would receive a free vacation. A free 11 night stay in our home was NEVER promised at any time. We are a little shocked anyone would think 3 light bulbs, a couple loose door handles and a leaky sink entitles them to a free vacation, but we suppose there is a first for everything. Upon their departure, we decided to generously refund them for one night since the items they pointed out should have been taken care of and it was an “inconvenience”. That being said, this house is EXACTLY as shown and described on the website. The house was NOT dirty, the carpets NOT filthy, and the home is continuously maintained. It’s disheartening and disingenuous to say otherwise. We think the 50+ positive reviews on our property tell a different story and we hope you feel the same way.

Large home in a great location!

We stayed at Hawk Street Hacienda for a week and enjoyed our stay. The location is fantastic! It is conveniently located near downtown, beaches and the airport (yes, there is airport noise, but we hardly noticed it). The home was very spacious with large bedrooms and a kitchen with ample space for cooking large meals. The house was immaculate upon our arrival, including the pool and backyard area. There was also plenty of parking in front of the house and on the street. The home is stocked with lots and lots of towels, so don't worry about bringing your own. We used the pool all week and never were without towels. We were especially grateful that we were allowed to bring our dog with us. She enjoyed sunbathing on the turf. Just a few things to keep in mind: the mattresses are very firm, which I understand is a matter of preference, but if you like soft beds consider bringing mattress toppers. The linens on some of the beds are in need of updating. Last, be sure that whoever sleeps in the bedroom off the pool is an early bird. The summer sun rises early and comes directly through the sheer white curtains. Not a problem if you plan to wake up early, but night owls such as my husband and I had to relocate to sleep in past 6am. Overall, we enjoyed our time at Hawk Street Hacienda. All of our guests marveled at this beautiful home and the fantastic views from upstairs. And we had a blast playing in the pool, relaxing in the hot tub and roasting s'mores in the fire pit. I would recommend this property for your next San Diego vacation!

Very nice with exceptions

The house is very beautiful and nicely appointed with some exceptions. The outside furniture is in various states of disrepair. Several of the chairs were broken. One of the chairs oozed some liquid on my clothes and stained it.

The pool filtration system was not working correctly because there was a layer of sand on the pool bottom, regardless of changing the pool filter. So the pool would start out crystal clear until someone began swimming then it would be cloudy. There wasn't a functioning pool net for filtering surface debris.

The beautiful nighttime lighting that is shown in the pictures doesn't exist because the lights are no longer maintained.

The downstairs bedroom has very few outlets that are functioning. The back gate doesn't properly close, so someone could easily gain access. Several lights were burned out without replacement bulbs available. It appeared that in numerous instances, the details were missed.

Most of these things could be overlooked because the house is quite beautiful, well laid out, and spacious. It wasn't until our kids (eager to get in the water) jumped in the pool and hot tub, pressed an unmarked button that caused the pool / hot tub system to stop working. There are numerous warnings in the house-rules notebook about pressing the wrong button. It meant that Mike had to make a house-call to reset it. When he arrived, he walked in without introducing himself, then spoke to us as if we were idiots. It was the most rude encounter I've experienced in any VRBO rental. (It would be wise to actually put markings on the buttons so one knows what NOT to press or get a more simple system - it doesn't have to be that complicated.)

And lastly, being near the airport, you do hear a lot of aircraft traffic. That wasn't as bad, though, as the road construction project outside the house. We could have at least been warned about that or had a reduced price. It wasn't pleasant being woken early in the morning by jackhammers.

I do not recommend this rental.

Owner's Response: I want to point out that this stay occurred almost a year ago. A lot has changed at the property since then. I'll list those changes below: 1. All new outdoor furniture was purchased during the off season. We had been saving for that purchase for a while and are thrilled with the new look. 2. Pool gets cleaned and serviced every week. If sand is tracked into the pool between pool guy visits and it's affecting your experience, then please notify us. Our pool guys are on call and can get out there immediately to fix any problem. 3. All the outdoor lighting has been replaced and the glow is back. 4. The downstairs bedroom has 3 fully functioning outlets. I apologize in advance if that's not enough. 5. The back gate has been fixed and completely shuts. 6. Replacement bulbs are available in the entryway credenza. This fact is pointed out in the welcome binder found in the kitchen. 7. I apologize we are not in control of the city of San Diego's road construction schedule or the location of the city airport (if you are not aware, the airport is located downtown so any home centrally located will hear the airport - just part of living in San Diego and very convenient for transportation purposes). Good news - road construction is complete. **Side note - these guests did receive a $500 discount, but clearly forgot that 8. I want to publicly apologize if Brian felt my actions were rude in any way during his stay. We are aware the spa control panel is touchy, but it's completely functional and very expensive to replace. That is why we communicate proper instructions for the controls 3 times before you engage the spa (1. In the rental agreement, 2. In your welcome email, 3. In the welcome binder in the kitchen). It doesn't happen often, but sometimes people or their kids don't follow the instructions and shut down the system. When this occurs, it requires a personal visit from yours truly to reset the system. Most of the times guests are very apologetic when this occurs and I do my best to get over there immediately and fix the problem. There are other times I get the call and it unfortunately interrupts my time with my family and it's harder for me to be super chatty when I arrive. The good news is, though I was short on words, I still managed to get over there immediately and fixed the problem. I hope that counts for something. Suggestion: offer me a beer for my efforts;) Please contact me directly if you still have any questions about this review.

Nice but some disappointment

This home was secured for my wedding. Site unseen and only having the internet this house sang to me by the glow of the pictures that are splattered all around the web. I loved this house and immediately secured. The house itself is lovely. Needs freshening up, you know the TV's, minus one were all from the 90's. The bed spreads seem dated, but yet clean and comfortable. Things like rusty vent in master bathroom/odd to look at while showering in such a nice BR shower. Furnishings in 4 of 5 bedrooms looked to have been purchased from thrift stores or garage sales, not what I would expect. The house was painted nicely, the living room furniture was more updated than the rest of the house. Master bed was good and the breeze you get from opening the french doors is wonderful! Kitchen was adequate, island is nice, counters are good. The range did not work that well. Cooking for 15 people for a wedding dinner and only have 3 burners that actually worked properly was a bit of a buz kill. The audio system's sub woofer did not work, old system, VCR??? They don't even make tapes anymore. Outside- I booked this property specifically for the pool, spa, waterfalls (plural) and the lights at night. When we arrived there is NO lighting outside like the many photos. All lights in front seemed burned out, no water fall running outside the 3rd bedroom, oh but just a cesspool of slime in a non working water fall. The front entrance did have one dim light in the trees and one front porch light. As for the spa, one light in all of the pool and no lights in the spa. I was so disappointed, we had 20 people for a wedding and wedding dinner in the evening and there were not was sense of warm glow at all. We made a warm glow after spending 100.00 dollars at Home Depot to bring in lightening after we were told that the owner had no intentions of fixing any of the lighting issues, nor would he be fixing the issues with the lights or water fall out front. Pool/spa are great def pay extra for heat. Pool man shows up unannounced but your told that upfront, if you have a dog you might be careful because he comes through the back gate right into the pool area. Yard is tiny, but nice and clean. Foliage is green and, no lights in any of the trees in back yard were working. Ants lived with us, we kept the kitchen clean but they were everywhere, outside and inside...crawling all over counters and cupboards. Dishes are old, dingy and need to be thrown out. Abundant towels a plus!

Owner's Response: Judy called and started the conversation by saying "you have a lovely home and I should know because I own beachfront property". Then she went on to voice her concern over two items. Outdoor landscaping lights and the front waterfall. I explained to her that we knew of both issues and they were scheduled to be fixed, but would not be fixed during her stay. She was upset because she was hosting a "dinner party" and wanted everything to be perfect. We were never informed there was going to be a wedding at our property. All of the outdoor landscaping lights and the waterfall were fixed the very next week. SO THE GLOW IS BACK. Including the spa light. As for the broken stovetop and the ants, I wish Judy would have told us, because we would have had those issues taken care of immediately. The next group of guests did inform us and we fixed those issues the same day. No one has ever complained about the furnishings or the dishes. I will review their status immediately. And as for all brand new TVs, we'll get to it, but we don't find ourselves spending much time watching TV when we live in such an amazing place like San Diego. They do all work. The main TV is a 50" flatscreen HDTV with a Blu-ray dvd player attached to it. The sub woofer was just unplugged and is now up and woofing again. It is and always will be our goal to provide an excellent vacation experience for our guests. If any reviewers still have any questions regarding any information here, please don't hesitate to call. Great Stay in San Diego

Location is 3 miles north of the Gaslamp and the convention center but easily accessible by car. San Diego is a easy city for driving. Neighborhood is a bit hard to navigate as streets are a bit confusing. Walking to the Trolley (~3/4 mile) is not recommended though as have to cross 2 highways. Taxis were easy to use and $15 with tip to Gaslamp. Very close to airport with $15 cab ride from airport to home.

Beautiful home with plenty of space, a very nice heated pool, a large heated hot tub, a very big grill and outdoor fire pit. Master suite on 2nd floor is very nice, basement room is large with a king bed and a queen pull out couch. Bunk bed room had a real bed on top (twin) and a futon mattress (full size) on bottom.

We stayed with 5 people for a convention for 1 week and had plenty of space. The kitchen was big and well stocked, appliances including stove, fridge, dishwasher, 2 sinks, disposal, oven worked very well. Audio system and TV/cable worked great.

Overall, great place for a convention with more privacy and space than staying downtown.

There really is no reason to leave this home, but if you do you’ll find yourself located in the most convenient spot in San Diego! See just how close you would be by using the map link below. You are minutes from the airport terminal, the Balboa Park with all its museums, World Famous zoo, theater, Organ Pavilion and numerous other attractions. You are also minutes from Hillcrest, downtown, San Diego bay, the beaches, Little Italy, Petco Park, the Gaslamp District and many more places. And if you are looking to “go green” and save gas, many of these sites are within walking distance! If you are more adventurous, you’ll find the freeway 2 minutes away to take you anywhere your heart desires…

A damage/reservation deposit of $750 is required. This must be received within seven (7) days of booking the reservation. The deposit automatically converts to a security/damage deposit upon arrival. The deposit is NOT applied toward rent; however, it is fully refundable within (21) days of departure, provided the following provisions are met:
a. No damage is done to unit or its contents (including bicycles, beach chairs, boogie boards & umbrella), beyond normal wear and tear.
b. No charges are incurred due to contraband, pets or collection of rents or
services rendered during the stay.
c. All debris, rubbish and discards are placed in large outdoor trash cans located in driveway (see item 15 below), and soiled dishes are placed in the dishwasher and cleaned. One load of laundry (towels or linens) is started (see “CLEANING” in section 20 below).
d. All keys are returned to lockbox and unit is left locked.
e. All charges accrued during the stay are paid prior to departure.
f. No linens or towels are lost or damaged.
g. NO Early check-in or late check-out (unless agreed to in writing in advance).
