Villers is 45 minutes away from Reims, the city's cathedral, where the kings of France have been burried, the city of Jeanne d'Arc, and of the champagne wine cellars! The wine grapes harvesting start from mid-August, onward, the best time for visits to Champagne cellars and vineyards around Epernay.

ADELBERT VON CHAMISSO.The castle Boncourt, the birth place of Adelaïde de Chamisso, 7 minutes away from Villers, is no more. But the outlines of the castle moat are still clearly visible. And the castle chapel, where he was baptized in 1781, survived and was recently restored. The Castle of Villers, where his uncle lived and which was the only one of the 3 castles the family possessed in the region that survived the Revolution, is the most important monument in France commemorating him,.His mother is buried here in Villers in the Chamisso family tumb at the cemetery around the very beautiful 14e / 15 century built village church.

THE GREAT WAR 1914 -1914. Villers lies in the on the border of the war zone in the Argonne forest. Many, including German and American, cemeteries and other war monuments, among them for instance the Kaiser Tunnel, are near here. You can see how Germans and Frenchmen lived and fought at 100 meters distance from each other. Verdun is 45 km away. The region is preparing for a large scale commemoration in 2014 of the beginning of that War hunderd years ago.

CULINARY. The Champagne is known for its excellent cuisine and good wines. In the immediate vicinity there are many small restaurants where you can eat very well for surprisingly little money. The bakery passess by every morning (including Sunday ) with fresh bread and pastries on your doorstep.

OTHERS .The estate has its own gardener and a housekeeper. Garage and horse stables available.

Gracious Host

  • 5 of 5

We decided on a last minute Thanksgiving weekend getaway and stumbled upon this listing. Our plans were to find a place in between Verdun and Paris in order to take advantage of limited driving to the WWI sites and sight seeing in Paris. The Hunting lodge was the perfect spot. We arrived to fresh baked goods and a gracious husband and wife care taker team. They quickly had us settled and we started preparing our Thanksgiving feast that we packed along in coolers. The house was perfectly suited for our large family (5 kids, 2 adults) plenty of space and sleeping arrangements. The estate where the house was located was beautiful and provided the kids with plenty of room to play (included a playground, bicycles, and ping pong table). Later in the evening on the first night, we were introduced to the estate owner and he gave us a tour of the grounds and explained the history or the estate. We appreciated him taking the time to show us around and were absolutely thrilled to learn more about the entire estate and the main Chateau. We highly recommend staying here. We are hoping to return there when the weather is warmer and see the estate in bloom. Thank you to our hosts, staff and the fresh baked goods delivery every morning.

Owner's Response: Thank you very much for your review. Very nice to have an American family with five kids staying with us, interested in everything around and farther away, and with such an explorative spirit. Looking forward seeing you again, Johannes.

Beautiful French Chateau in the countryside convenient to many attractions

  • 5 of 5

Overall, we were very pleased with the process of our vacation booking. Mr. and Mrs. Landmann were the most communicative and genuinely concerned every step of the way. The language barriers were minimal however just occasionally caused slight miscommunication we were able to work through. The payment went smooth as they established credit card acceptance. The owner also combined most all of the charges into a lump all inclusive as American often prefer (bedding, towels, wifi, etc). He went above and beyond to arrange a hunt 1 hr away and it was fabulous experience.

We found the area and the food to be amazing and relaxing. Wifi worked great and the local town of Saint Menehould was pleasant to dine. We found the Super U (Walmart to Americans) to be 15 min drive and a real value for food.

The home was quiet, bed comfortable, though if you are used to KING size bed it is not the American size, it would be more equivalent to a Queen. No real worries just in case you have a BIG man it might be an issue. We had a total of 5 in the home and it was perfect. I will note, the staircase is steep (No problem with kids as they have a secure gate at top) however if you have bad knees this would not be for you.

On another positive note, our hosts were very kind and treated us to a champagne reception on our 3rd day, a rare invite in the states and it was much appreciated. We walked the historical home and loved the level and depth of our hosts.

We found the home to be in order and with everything we needed for the most part.

The drive time to Verdun (45min) and the Champagne cellars (55min) were easy to visit and educational. I thoroughly enjoyed staying in the countryside and really getting to know the true French, not what you might find in the big city of Paris. I highly recommend this Chateau and its wealth of history and accommodation.

Idyllischer Urlaub auf dem Lande

  • 5 of 5

The HUNTING LODGE is part of an estate of 6 ha with a park and a XVIth-XVIIIth century castle on a hill top with beautiful views on unspoilt countryside and forests. The chateau belonged for centuries until 1904 to the family of Adelbert von Chamisso, the famous French born, but German poet (1781-1838), biologist, explorer and creator of the worldwide bestseller Peter Schlemihl, the story of the man who lost his shadow.

The lodge is located in the heart of the historical Argonne Forest (central battle ground during World War I) on the border between Champagne and Lorraine, 9 km from Ste. Ménehould, 35 km from Chalons-en-Champagne, 45 km from Verdun in Lorraine, 80 km from Reims, 126 km from Nancy, capital of Lorraine, 168 km from Luxembourg, 196 miles from Disneyland (30 min. TGV ex Reims) and 229 km from Paris.

The estate sits at the entrance of the village of Villers-en-Argonne, described in 1900 as a ' Village coquet bâti sur les rives de l'Aisne a proximité de la foret grande (charming village build on the banks of the Aisne near the great forest. ' The castle, on a hill, overlooks the valley of the River Aisne. The hunting lodge (with two independent wings: The West Wing and East Wing) is luxuriously restored. Here only the West Wing can be booked.
