Mahia, Oraka and Opoutama are three very safe family friendly swimming beaches nearby. But if you want the surf just walk down to the cove in front of the house, or drive to Mahunga or Blacks Beach, two of New Zealand's best known surf spots.
If you don't feel like firing up the barbie for tea you can get meals at the Sunset restaurant and bar or the best Fish'n' chips ever at the Mahia camping ground cafe and a few minutes walk will get you to the Rocket Lab Cafe.
