Ratanui is a 12.5 hectare hilly farm, which is yours to explore. The accommodation has everything you need for a comfortable stay. You have access to the whole woolshed so there is extra indoor space for sitting or playing games. A massive door opens to the north, providing easy access to the sunny, sheltered, grassy area surrounded by large, deciduous trees. A BBQ, outdoor furniture and fire pit with fuel are at your disposal. You can also use the 130ha farm across the valley.
This is a great place to come and chill out for the weekend - read, sleep, talk, whatever - it's peaceful and lovely.
It's also a great place to bring the kids for adventures in the natural world. Wading up the little Mangaone stream, exploring bush-filled gullies, walking up the vehicle tracks to get a great view across Te Horo to the beach, seeing farm animals, using the swing on the sycamore tree, climbing hills and trees, having a BBQ dinner, sitting around the fire pit, going out in the dark to see glow worms -- it'll make a memorable holiday. Be sure to bring wellies! If it rains, the large indoor space provides room to explore and play - lots of games are provided.
Bring your horses. There is yarding (in sheep or deer yards) and grazing. We can arrange access to various farm tracks. Beach riding at Peka Peka is particularly good. There is an excellent instructor close by if you would like a lesson.
Five minutes drive to Te Horo cafe and to the north end of 6km Mangaone Walkway; 10 minutes to the beach and to the stunning Otaki river; 12 minutes to Otaki township with its outlet stores and eateries; 15 minutes to the Otaki Gorge, where the water is clear and deep; 75 minutes from Wellington.
Join a horse trek on the beach; visit local artists, Southwards Car Museum, Nga Manu Nature Reserve, Loco Miniature Railway and Garden, Trinity Rose Farm; swim in the Otaki river at the Pots Reserve; go to the Lavender Harvest or the Otaki beach kite festival.
