Hakalau House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

Aloha and welcome to Hawaii Paradise by the Sea on the incredible Hamakua coast in historic Hakalau. This is a two bedroom, two bath plantation style home. Your back lanai offers beautiful views of the ocean, incredible sunrises, passing ships and whale watching. You can enjoy all this while relaxing over a refreshing tropical drink at your outside dining table or grilling tonight's dinner. While at home have some friendly competition at the foosball table (table soccer). Take a 5 minute stroll to the cliff's edge or down to Hakalau Bay for a refreshing swim or body boarding.

The locals refer to this part of the island as God's country and it won't be long before you see why. We are minutes away from Umauma Falls, botanical gardens, the grand 442 foot Akaka Falls, Kolekole Beach Park (a nice place to picnic), 2 Zip lines and the small town of Honomu with it's quaint shops and the best shave ice around. Honolii, one of the best surf spots on the island is only 10 minutes away. The historic town of Hilo is 5 minutes further with a farmers market, Tsunami Museum, Rainbow Falls, Liliuokalani Japanese style garden, Banyan Drive, Coconut Island and downtown shopping and dining. Another 30 to 45 minutes South will bring you to Kilauea Caldera-the world's most active volcano, the hot ponds and tidal pools to snorkel in. A 30 minute drive North of the house brings you to breathtaking Waipio Valley, Parker Ranch and golf courses.

The spacious retreat comes with everything you need to enjoy making your special meals or smoothies in this beautiful kitchen with granite countertops. You will find everything you need to make your vacation complete even your own washer and dryer. This home is handicap accessible. Sorry no pets or indoor smoking.

This is a separate rental unit adjoined to our home where you will have complete privacy with your own private entrance and phone number. So come relax, enjoy, and experience Hawaii Paradise By The Sea.

About Sandy and Bob

Bob and I moved from New Jersey at the same time as our home was completed in 2008. After vacationing on the Big Island for many years and never wanting to leave our dream finally came true. We are in awe of the beauty that surrounds us with the ocean view, mountains and beautiful flowers, this is an amazing island and we look forward to sharing it with you.

Sandy and Bob purchased this house in 2008

Why Sandy and Bob chose Hilo District

This property offers a wonderful ocean view for watching the ships, whales or just day dreaming while sipping lemonade. It's walking distance to Hakalau Bay to watch the surf, boogie board, have a picnic or see an occasional monk seal.

Beautiful view, clean and well kept unit.

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Bob and Sandy's home--this is a single story duplex, and we had our own private parking area and entry. The unit is very clean and well maintained with a nice open concept in the large comfortable living room, the dining area and the kitchen. Both bedrooms and bathrooms are modern and clean. We really enjoyed eating and even grilling some of our meals out on the lanai---which has an amazing view of the beautiful landscaped yard and the ocean--we even saw some whales on a couple occasions!

The area has incredible scenery--every morning we went on walks down to the bay--with a spectacular overlook and lush green tropical foliage. Bob and Sandy were helpful in giving us hints on things to do and see, and since we were there for two weeks, they even gave us a couple of bunches of bananas cut off their own banana trees to take with us as we traveled to the other side of the island!

We highly recommend this "paradise by the sea"--Bob and Sandy have given this home a very appropriate name!!

Owner's Response: It was such a pleasure to meet all of you. You had good timing to get a nice view of the whales and were here to see the blue Jade hanging from the trees as well. We too enjoy the walk to the cliff and down to the bay, it's so peaceful and pretty. Next time you'll have to go for a swim down there. Hope to see you again.

What a amazing house. The kitchen is outstanding.

It was so quiet out there. Unfortunately we have to leave after one night. Hope to come back.

Relaxing, and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

We bump into Bob when we reached, and he helped us with the luggage, very grateful as we bought too many local fruits from the supermarket!

The property and the surrounding is wonderful ....If you're not sure about the rules, Sandy has small notes attached everywhere to remind you :).

We have enjoyed our leisure days there just roaming to the Bay, catching people perform nice surfing, locals were very friendly to greet us whenever we saw them ..... I think we didn't realize it is Sandy who we talked to when we purchase the 2 very best ice cream from the Wood Gallery!

The area is quite remote, prepare food before you come in ....but if you don't, Hilo is just 25 minutes drive away. We often have our meals outside the lanai, simple enjoying the breath from the ocean, and the surrounding trees.

Thanks again to Bob and Sandy for having us as guests for your complete equipped house. We sure hope to drop by to say Aloha the next time we visit Big Island. Aloha and Mahalo!

Owner's Response: You two are some of our last guests as we have sold the vacation rental. We still have other rentals that we manage. VRBO #'s 490553, 771926, 678528, 678530 all with beautiful ocean views. So if you ever come back we have other great rentals for you. I remember when you came into the Woodshop Gallery for the ice cream and telling other customers that you were on your Honeymoon. You two were so nice and make a cute couple, and we hope to see again in the future.

Spectacular morning sunrises

  • 4 of 5

The house was so clean and very well equipped for our stay in the Hilo area. Bob and Sandy were lovely hosts and went out of their way to make our excursions to the Merrie Monarch Festivities more enjoyable for us. We were very busy every day exploring the Island but would have been equally happy just staying put at the house reading all day. One of us really loved taking a morning run down to the bay each day. We were here for a week and would love to come back for another stay with Bob and Sandy.

Owner's Response: The Merrie Monarch is such a special event, so we're glad you were able to get tickets to attend. We were more than happy to loan you the chairs and umbrellas to watch the parade as well. The morning walk down to the bay in the morning is so invigorating and pretty. The air smells so clean plus the views of the ocean and rain forest are a bonus, we'll have to join you next time. We look forward to seeing you again in the future. Mahalo and Aloha

Comfortable

  • 4 of 5

This rental is comfortably laid out for 2 couples -- plenty of space and privacy; we didn't get in each other's way. All necessary supplies are thoughtfully provided. The most restful spot is sitting on the lanai staring out at the ocean listening to the birds and coqui frogs and watching the apple bananas ripen. At about 14 miles north of Hilo, it's convenient to waterfalls, bays, old plantation towns and Waipio Valley, and not a long drive to Hawaii Volcano National Park or the Onizuka Visitor Center on Mauna Kea for stargazing. The walk / run down to Hakalau Bay is a pleasant morning waker-upper. The only drawback is its location immediately alongside Highway 19 which provides a lot of traffic noise.

Sandy and Bob were thoughtful hosts, answering many questions even before we arrived. They didn't intrude; in fact, we would have enjoyed visiting with them more as they know a lot of the history of the area.

Owner's Response: The bananas that you were waiting on finally ripened, shortly after you left. Too bad it wasn't sooner so you could have enjoyed them. You adventurous four certainly did a lot while here, there's so much more waiting for you. You probably needed a vacation when you got home to rest up.

Absolutely gorgeous

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I were stopping through the Big Island for the weekend and were late getting in on Friday. Upon our arrival the house was well lit for us to get inside and once we walked inside our mouths hit the floor. It is hands down the prettiest place I have stayed using homeaway. Sandy and Bob had everything laid out perfect with great communication. We cannot wait to come back.

Owner's Response: We are more than happy to have the lights on for our guests arriving at night. It's hard enough to try find a place you are not familiar with but trying at night is even more challenging. We know how special it is to come to the island so having a comfortable place to call home for you is important to us. We are so glad you enjoyed your stay and the island to want to come back. We'll leave the lights on.
