Are there still some adventurous, Huck Finn type sparks alive in you? Then turn up your Jurassic Big Island experience another notch by staying in this unique, hand-made, GENUINE treehouse built 20 ft. up into 5 living, native Hawaiian ohia trees.
Look down onto the reaching fronds of amazing hapu'us (giant tree ferns) from huge windows and lanais all around, providing 360-degree birds-eye views of this secure, private 4 acre paradise. Witness the thrills of nature's interactions while nestled in homey comforts, including full-kitchen and bath, TV/DVD, music and more to modernize your Swiss Family Robinson experience.
Fall asleep while star-viewing from your comfy bed perched high up in the spacious loft. Some nights, even the volcano's red glow is visible.
A real-deal treehouse... located between two active volcanic vents... in Hawaii... you might never want to leave! But Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and the charming artist colony of Volcano Village are nearby if you do.
Huck Finn says: For the creative, environmentally sensitive types, not the fussy. This truly 'green' structure was intentionally built in the most non-invasive manner, using high grade building wood and reconditioned windows, doors, and most everything else (including the 'kitchen sink!') And after 6 years of testing by various forces of nature, it's structural integrity has been proven to be sound and solid. And the trees are happy, too.

I don't know how many other vacation rental owners meet and greet their guests but I do, it's fun. I so appreciate meeting the kindred spirits who seek out TreeHouses to stay in. I have enjoyed many great conversations and count most of my past guests as my friends now. I delight in telling my new guests about the gathering of the recycled materials and the building of my TreeHouses ( which took 6 years) as well as all the wonderful places to visit and things to experience and hikes to take around the Volcano area, inside the National Park, in Volcano Village, and in Pahoa area near by and other unique places on the Big Island. TreeHouse enthusiasts are my favorite people and an all around good lot.
My husband and I recently stayed in Skye's treehouse with our two kids and my mom. My mom and I found and booked it online and decided to keep it a surprise for my husband and the kids. I wish I'd had video of their faces when they saw where we were staying, and I have to say that even I was surprised. It looked amazing when I saw it online, but being there in person completely blew me away! We've traveled quite a bit over the years, and I have to say that it is truly the most incredible place I've ever stayed! It really made us wish there weren't nearby volcanoes to explore so we could have just hung out in the treehouse for our entire stay.
Skye was excellent to deal with in preparing for our trip and met us on arrival for the grand tour. The treehouse has full amenities while still making you feel that you are alone in the middle of the rainforest, gazing out on the tops of the trees. We all loved meeting Skye, hearing about how the treehouse came to be and getting ideas for how to best explore Volcanoes National Park. My kids also loved hanging out with Monjoe, the cat. :)
Not sure what else I can say other than if you're considering staying here, DO IT! Volcanoes National Park is just a few minutes away, and the drive over from Hilo wasn't bad at all. The only problem is that now we all want to stay in treehouses everywhere we travel!
The Volcano tree house, nestled in an Ohia tree forest, just above the canopy of the hapu’u ferns, is a little slice of Heaven. Having heard of the place for years, I finally got the opportunity to stay recently. And Boy! It did not disappoint! It was actually more incredible than i had expected! We spent 2 nights there as a staycation. Once we were settled in, we did not leave the place. It was truly a magical spot that makes me long to live in it full time. With all the expansive windows, one feels absolutely enveloped in nature. The attention to detail the owner did, makes it even more amazing- that the tree upstairs in the bedroom has branches that go right thru the wall to the outside is incredible! Anytime i find someone looking for a place to stay volcano, I tell them of this place. I cannot wait to go back!
We absolutely loved our experience at the treehouse. The treehouse reflects the exquisite skill and artistry of Skye, who owns and personally built the treehouse. One of the best parts of the experience was getting to visit with Skye about his experience in building treehouses. Both of the treehouses currently available as vacation rentals are equally tasteful, comfortable and authentic. I doubt we will ever have a better treehouse experience. Our stay there met and exceeded our expectations. We only wish we could have stayed longer. Mahalo Skye!
Built among giant ferns and ancient native ohia trees, home to sweet song birds, gentle rains and huge starry night skies, this tree house is a work of functional art!
Perched 20 feet above, yet still inside a tropical rainforest, the extra large glass windows are your open view to the beauty that surrounds you.
The bedroom on the upper deck accessed from a hand crafted spiral staircase is a cozy and welcoming resting place. There is a secret small kine sleeping place that I imagine any aged kid would love. We also used the futon couch/bed downstairs. It was also a comfortable sleeping arrangement to fall asleep snuggly in front of the fireplace (super bonus in my book)!
The kitchen had everything I needed to make a gourmet meal. Two burner propane stove top, an apartment size refrigerator/freezer… what more could I ask for, a slice of heaven from a cooks perspective. There was fresh coffee beans to grind for the morning routine. Only thing is if you don’t like coffeemate, bring your own whitener.
We used the lovely deck to enjoy the morning brew and night star gazing. We stayed for two night and only left to take a walk in the neighborhood.
The attention to detail and the craft of construction is really quite impressive and well-thought out. The tree house has a lovely indoor outdoor feel to it, all safe and sound, glamorous rustic luxury.
The host (Skye) and helper (Krispin) are super friendly and more than accommodating.
And Joe the resident forest cat is a charmer.
I highly recommend and would certainly return, it far out exceeded my expectations. Many thanks for a lovely stay.
What an amazing place! The treehouse is simply magical, like nowhere else we've ever stayed. It is hard to imagine until you see it and experience it, but you will be living IN A TREEHOUSE. A real one. After one night when it was very windy (with lots of creaking and swaying), I decided to look under the house to see what kind of support system it had... there is none. It is a few trees, and that's it. And it's glorious (in a rustic sort of way)-- the "lanai" is a miracle, the view of the rainforest from all parts of the house, the master bedroom feels like it's on top of the world.... Volcano itself is fantastic as well-- it's worth all the time you can spend in the park, and the village is adorable too (try the Thai restaurant! Really good!). Skye was a perfect host, explaining everything you'd want to know about the house. It is a remarkable, once in a lifetime, utterly unique experience you will not regret.
This place is even better in real life than in the photos. I don’t know the grownups or the kids were more excited for our stay. As it turned out this place exceeded everyone’s wildest dreams. It’s like staying in a super comfy work of art. Everything is spotlessly clean and gorgeous. Skye has considered every detail. There is awesome fresh coffee in the kitchen and creamers in the fridge. The shower was warm with great water pressure (no easy feat considering the house is in the trees). Our 2 boys loved the sleeping nooks under the main bed- which was also well planned and cozy. They each had night lights and a window and a secret ladder down to the bathroom (shhh don’t tell your kids- they will love discovering it on their own). There are incredible views of the lush forest from every angle- and it’s all very private. It feels like a completely different world (sorta of like Jurassic Park without the dinosaurs). There are all sorts of decks and an elevated walkway out into the forest (a perfect place to drink that incredible coffee while listening to the birds). Skye is a terrific host (along with being a master builder and artist). He is lots of fun to talk to and has some great tips concerning activities. The location of the treehouse is also perfect. It’s just minutes away from Volcano Park and a 45 min drive to the Hilo airport. We enjoyed the breakfast buffet at the Rim Restaurant in the Volcano House lodge (located within the park). We also enjoyed a day trip to Champagne pond- it was worth the challenges in getting there. Remember to bring a copy of "Hawaii The Big Island Revealed" by Andrew Doughty on your trip- it has some great tips for places to go and things to see all around the Big Island. Also remember to bring a rain jacket- after all it is a rainforest. We hope to return some day to this magical treehouse- until then we will hold on to the memories of waking up in the trees in total comfort surrounded by the sound of birds
The Treehouse is near the Hawaiian Volcanoes National Park, where you can view the glowing crater, it's about 7 minutes away. Also Kalapana, where the lava has been entering the ocean is a 40 minute drive. Hilo is where all the water sports are also the movies and museums and is about 30 minutes away. Another fun event is exploring old lava tubes, with a guide if you like.
