When we first witnessed the mountain views at “Graybuck Lodge” we knew we had found something truly special. Now that our house renovations are complete, we are ready to share the warmth of our home and the majesty of our mountains with you.
“Graybuck Lodge' is centrally located in Bat Cave less than ten minutes from Chimney Rock Village and the recreational beach at Lake Lure and it is just slightly farther to Hendersonville, Black Mountain and Asheville. The rest of the western North Carolina vacation wonderland is an easy day trip away.
At more than 3,000 feet in elevation, “Graybuck Lodge” sits on the exposed granite of Shumont Mountain on the western rim of the gorge formed by tributaries of the Broad River. The 280-degree mountain views extend for over fifty miles from Hendersonville at one end to Mount Mitchell on the other. During the fall, the expanse of mountain colors is phenomenal and the higher elevation means the summers are cool and clear with crisp mornings even in August.
The house itself is a lovely three story rustic cedar Chalet which sits on a secure granite foundation. You enter the house into a warm pine accented Great Room and a full “tongue and grove” pine cathedral ceiling will greet you as you snuggle up in front of the stone fireplace. The big screen TV, sound system and DVD player will keep you entertained on the rare days you might want to stay inside.
Across from the great room you will find the dining area. Two tables seat up to twelve people without crowding anyone. You will find wineglasses and essentials in the antique bar in the corner of the room.
The full kitchen is adjacent to the dining area. You will find it complete with microwave, dishwasher, refrigerator and a combination gas and electric range with double ovens. It even has a separate beverage refrigerator and a huge pantry.
The main floor master bedroom provides a king-sized bed and walk-in closet that give you plenty of room to spread out and the completely refurbished bathroom will give you the privacy you desire.
Downstairs you will find the second master bedroom with king-sized bed and a 180-degree view of the mountains. You access the recreation area through the master bedroom. Here you will find a second big screen TV and stone fireplace. The recreation area also contains high-end game table.
The second downstairs bedroom is the most secluded and quietest room in the house and should probably be reserved for the “sleeper” in your group. This room contains a queen-sized bed and also has a vanity that the ladies can use before a night out at the local restaurants.
The downstairs shares the largest bathroom in the house. The washer and dryer and a laundry folding station are built into this bathroom and help you keep the clutter of soiled clothing away from the more traveled areas of the home.
Upstairs over the great room is the “Sweetheart’s Loft”. Its lucky occupants will find it is paneled in warm pine and secluded from the rest of the house with a queen-sized bed and its own private bath. They won’t feel closed in because the glass window-wall opens the room to the mountain views without exposing its occupants to the rest of the vacationers. Fully isolated from the lower house with a glass window-wall, the loft will allow those couples who desire some “privacy” a personal spot to which they can retire and be assured that they will not be disturbed.
The front deck is where you and your companions will enjoy your early morning coffee and your late night glass of wine. From the deck you have an unobstructed 280-degree view of the beautiful Blue Ridge Mountains. Your vantage point is located in the treetops about a 1,000 feet over the floor of the gorge. To the left, you look 25 miles to see Hendersonville on the horizon and to the right, at about the same distance, you see Clingman’s Dome and Mt. Mitchell. As you sit and enjoy the atmosphere, the goldfinches and hummingbirds will visit the feeders and entertain you all day.

Both Wendy and I are retired and we love to travel.
James (Tom) Eddins purchased this chalet in 2006
I wanted a mountain home to visit on vacation. When we walked into this one, we were sold by the fantastic views. After a full renovation, the had the mountain chalet we were searching for. This one is the real thing!
My girlfriend and I booked this property for a romantic getaway to enjoy the fall foliage and apple season in Black Mountain. This property delivers, believe me. The fall colors and the sounds of the wind rustling through the leaves will melt years of stress off of you. You can see from Hendersonville to Black Mountain and have a private deck with no sign of anyone around (you might possibly be able to see the road below in the winter, not sure, but it's still a spectacular view). It was very windy the first night we arrived so the deck was great for brief excursions more than sitting in relaxing (the wind can really rip through the gorge!), but the view from the living room is just as good and when the wind dies down the deck is hard to beat. You don't need to go anywhere else during your trip to have an amazing time.
A couple notes of caution - the property (at the time of this writing) is for sale and because of that I think they've cleared out some of the things you typically find in cabin rentals. There are plenty of pots, pans, dishes, glasses, etc but there are *NO* pantry staples at all. Make sure you bring everything you need the first night (cooking oil, paper towels, sugar, spices, charcoal for the grill, wood for the outdoor fire pit) as well as any OTC meds and bath soap (there was only hand soap available). It also appears many of the board games have been removed from downstairs so prepare if you have easily bored kiddos. If not you may have to make a 30 min trek back into town for essentials (I doubt domino's delivers). If you follow this advice you won't have a care in the world!
Thanks for sharing such a great property with us!
When searching for a location for our vacation, I had filtered the results to only include properties that were handicap accessible. This property is listed as wheelchair accessible and based on the photographs and description, I chose to book the property. The owner was well aware that a member of our party was elderly and handicap when he accepted the booking. However, the description of the property left out some important details for someone with mobility issues. I received information about accessing the property a few days before we left on our trip which included some additional descriptions of the property and the driveway.
This is the information I received "Be careful in the driveway. It is steep and intimidates some people!" and "Be careful driving in and out of the driveway. It is steep! (When backing out try to keep moving and continue straight out onto the stones when you reach the road. If you come to a complete stop before you are entirely out of the driveway, you may spin your tires and you will have less traction when you try to get moving again.) Some guests feel more comfortable leaving their cars up on the road"
Please note that the pictures do not show the driveway, they only show a vehicle parked by the house. The house is actually below the roadway and the second story and roof is what you will see from the road. The driveway is on about a 30-45 degree incline and was impossible to get our vehicle down to the house. My 80 year old mother with severe osteoarthritis and a heart condition could not possibly make it down the drive or back up again. We were unable to physically get my mother to the house and when I called the owner to report that we could not stay there the night we arrived ( yes it was late) he did not want to talk with me about this issue and would call me back in morning to discuss this with me. I did not receive a phone call from him the next day, but did speak with HomeAway customer service which was very helpful and gave me some suggestions to help with this issue.
PLEASE NOTE, this may not be the best property for you if you have someone with mobility issues. I cannot comment on the inside of the house as the driveway was to steep to safely walk down and I did not want to risk falling in the dark. We also noted a realtor sign on the road by the house address so not sure if this property is also for sale.
We spent our July 4th holiday at this lodge and loved every minute of it. Everything was wonderful. The beds were comfortable and there was more than enough room for all of us. We spent most of our time on the top deck just looking at the mountains. We ventured out once so that our grandkids could go fishing. Just a short drive to Morse Park. The owner was more than accommodating and easy to work with. Many restaurants and shops just a short drive into Chimney Rock & Lake Lure. I would definitely recommend this place for anyone that is looking for relaxing and amazing views!
This was our second year staying at the cabin. The kitchen is fully stocked. There is plenty of room and baths for several people. The view of the mountains are spectacular. We enjoy the both decks because we can use the basement deck in the rain and the upper deck on a pleasant day. The walk-in front from the drive is awesome for unpacking and packing. The drive is steep and easy to get used to. We plan to return next year. Recommend the stay
We enjoyed our stay at Graybuck Lodge. The pictures and description were accurate. The view was stunning. The kitchen was well stocked and the beds were comfortable. There was plenty of room for six adults and two toddlers.
The owner provided clear instructions for entry and for finding the home. His response to questions was prompt and communication was excellent.
It was so lovely and comfortable that I hated to leave.
If you are looking for a quiet mountain retreat, I recommend Graybuck Lodge.
We had a great time with our family. It had everything we needed available to us. The view was so beautiful and made for a very relaxing time. I would definitely go back.
