As you drive up our private mountain road you wonder what can possibly be at the end. As you open out onto the plateau you are rewarded as Can Rigall comes into view. A beautiful restored Catalan mas, fusing the traditional features of a three hundred year old mountain farmhouse with Norwegian industrial design.
Our road is 6km long and leaves from Arles-sur Tech. It is fully tarmacked and although narrow in places it is not at all vertiginous. We are the only house at the end of the road so there is very little traffic.
We have 8 Bedrooms sleeping 18 adults or children-
Inside the main house-
The master bedroom - double or twin - en suite shower room
1 large double room - en suite shower room
2 double or twin rooms - en suite shower room
2 double or twin rooms - sharing a shower room up their own private staircase
Part of the main house but access from outside-
2 triple rooms - twin plus single or double plus single - en suite shower room (these rooms have ladder stairs and are not advised for the elderly, those with reduced mobility or those planning to consume a copious amount of wine.
Possibility to also put a child bed in two largest rooms
There are several places to eat together depending on the time of day, sun etc-
The long dining table in the kitchen seats 18
There are three tables on the outdoor terrace that can be configured how and where you like
There is also a long table on the loggia (shown in the photos)
We have the pool, 22m long on one side. The other side is built up with banks to lounge about on. The deepest point is in the middle where it is possible to dive off the rock (see photo) at each end it is about 1m20 and there are wide steps to enter and leave. The pool is protected by a security alarm when not in use. Children must be supervised.
We have a large boule or petanque pitch in front of the house.
We have 6 adult mountain bikes for loan.
There is endless hiking here right from the front door and we can advise on routes according to time, effort, fitness etc.
For shopping - there is a Spar in the local village and a big Intermarché on the main road between Le Boulou and Céret for 'the big shop'
If you want to leave Can Rigall our region is full of wonderful places to visit-
Le Racou is our nearest beach, just one hour away if you want a dip in the Mediterranean.
Arles-sur-Tech has a beautiful abbey and cloister and the 'miracle' of Sainte Tombe.
There is also an artists collective - Les Moulins des Arts where local arts and crafts can be bought.
Céret is a beautiful tourist town, and is great for eating or having a drink on the terraces - during the summer months the sound of jazz often comes from pavement musicians.
For children we recommend Les Gorges de la Fou. Follow a suspended trail for 1.7km through the narrowest gorge in the world! Also the fortress at Prats de Mollo where during summer months there is always 'un spectacle'. Usually this is a costume drama involving cannon-fire, sword fighting, birds of prey and horsemanship. Very exciting!
If you are interested in local specialities we can tell you where to buy the best local produce. Rousquilles, the local lemon cake, were invented in our local bakery and on feast days there is often a queue out of their door!
You won't want to leave Can Rigall often, but tell us what you feel like doing and we'll tell you the best places to go!
