About Doug 612-408-7817

We are the parents to five wonderful children, and live in Golden Valley, MN

Why Doug 612-408-7817 chose Minnesota

We purchased this year round home as a vacation lake home because the commute from Golden Valley, MN is reasonable with five children to consider, and we have family with lake homes in the surrounding area. It feels private and removed from the cities, yet downtown Battle Lake is just minutes from our home, and Fergus Falls only 18 miles.

What makes this house unique

Our home is located at the end of a cul-de-sac, on a large, private lot on the lake. We enjoy the quiet serenity of the area, the children enjoy the dock, jump-off platform, swimming, boating, water-skiing, and having relay races around the yard and of course roasting marshmallows over the fire in the fire pit near the beach. A favorite stop for the children is Granny's Pantry for ice-cream and candy!

Wonderful lake and home, owner is great to work with

  • 4 of 5

My family has stayed at this property for the past 5 years and look forward to another stay in 2016. Doug is great to work with and his home is very spacious and comfortable for our family vacation. We do have a large family and space is not an issue in Doug's house. The lake is very peaceful and clean, fun for the kids to play since it is a smaller size lake. We enjoy the outdoor life at the lake - grilling, fishing, tubing, playing outdoor games, and relaxing by the bonfire pit. Battle lake is a great community; many restaurants, antique shops, shopping, recreational activities, etc. which we also enjoy visiting.

Nice price lake, home disappointing

  • 2 of 5

If you judge this stay based on the lake only, it was really nice. Lake was clear & beach was fairly free of weeds. Most times, we were the only ones on the lake. Lake was small but big enough for tubing, skiing, etc.

The house was large but was disappointing. Pictures must have been taken over 5 years ago because it wasn't in that great of shape - holes in walls, paint needed refreshing, hardwood floors need to be maintained better, stains on the carpeting. Downstairs furniture in the TV room was uncomfortable & old. King size bed is actually two twins pushed together. We were told we could only enter the house using 2 of the 4 doors. My daughter was stung twice entering the house through one of the allowed doorways. We found two hives underneath those steps. The only other entrance was to walk around to the back of the house. We went to town to purchase Raid. After having taken care of the hives ourselves, we found many cans of Raid in a storage closet. Would have been nice if the owners would have taken care of this before we checked in. They should be looking over the grounds each week when they clean to resolve these issues - they obviously knew they had a problem by the amount of Raid in the closet.

When the owner says the kitchen is fully stocked - please understand that it is not. No crockpot, mixing bowls, 9 x 13 pan, muffin tins, griddle, etc.

When paying this price, I assume that toilet paper will be provided. Nope - we had to go to town that day to purchase toilet paper for the week. Also had to purchase batteries for the remote.

A storm came through one of the afternoons. We lost electricity for 3 hours. We were unable to locate an emergency kit of any kind-no candles or flashlights. Lift station was also run on electricity so toilet water was not being replenished. No generator could be found on the property for these types of emergency situations. We were fortunate that the electricity came on before dark but were worried about what we would do.

Outdoor grill didn't work 3 out of the 7 days we were there.

Home had lots of spiders. One of the basement rooms wasn't slept in after the first few nights as we found a ton of spiders in the closet and the girls found bugs crawling on their bed.

Overall disappointing for the price. I could have overlooked some of the maintenance issues if the price wasn't so high. Owner was told about the issues after our stay & he wasn't apologetic.

Owner's Response: We have had approximately 100 families stay in our home, and with the exception of a couple of small complaints that were fixed immediately, we have received wonderful feedback, with many families returning each year. The complaining family was dishonest with us several times during the rental process (i.e. I sent payment myself so keep waiting, my daughter must have lost it...), and I knew it was a bad idea to deal with people that were not being straight forward. Lesson learned. It is hard to combat this sort of thing on social media because damage can be done with words without regard to truth. We never received any complaint from this party until the day they left, so pretty hard to rectify any legitimate issues at that point for them. Here are the areas covered: Floors: There are wear marks/scratches on the hard wood floors around the dining room table due to heavy usage by families staying with us, but other than that specific location the hardwood floors are in great shape. The carpet is also in good shape, with a couple of stains left by children of families staying with us. There are no holes in any walls. The gas grill has worked for every other family that has stayed with us, both before and after. It is accurate to say that there is no crockpot or muffin tins, but there are numerous pots, pans, electric frying pan/griddle, coffee maker, blender, toaster, serving dishes, baking pans, coffee mugs, glasses of all kinds, cups, plates and silverware beyond what a family of 20 could possibly use. Paper products are not included with rental, and that is clearly stated in the contract. However, we do stock each bathroom with 2 rolls of toilet paper, and paper towels in the kitchen. We have a professional service spray the interior and exterior each year to help prevent for bugs, but bugs do exist. We were accused of having specific knowledge of a wasps nest, and the proof was that there was wasp repellent found in the laundry room. If we had known about it, we obviously would have sprayed it ourselves - makes no sense. To be fair, we do have a responsibility to do everything we can to ensure safety on the property, which we try to do. The nest was under the stairs, on the opposite side of a 2 by 4, not in plain view, and we didn’t see it. Please look at pictures, and call with questions or concerns. This is a large private home, and with the exception of this party, others have made wonderful memories with their families there.

Great cabin and owner

  • 5 of 5

Due to some flooding my family and I (4 kids and 6 adults) found out Saturday morning that the cabin we had planned to rent for the week was not going to be available. After calling multiple other owners Doug was more then willing to drive up that day and get the cabin ready and take care of the paper work.

Everything about the cabin was great. Our kids caught plenty of fish right off the dock and even a few bigger fish out of the boat. The yard, swimming area and fire pit were all wonderful and used everyday.

I would recommend this property to any of my friends.
