The historic yet fully updated Thomas Harrison House is the premier vacation rental home in St. Michaels and has been rented as such since 1992. It is the only large vacation rental in the Town. The 18th century house (built while George Washington was President) is located on the harbor and the town park in the center of St. Michaels. The house has beautiful water views and is situated within walking distance of all museums, shops (including grocery stores and drug stores), restaurants, farmer's market, town pool, tennis courts, library, and other attractions.

A perfect location for family, families, or a group of friends vacationing, or attending weddings, reunions, or other events in St. Michaels and its surrounding areas.

Built around 1795 by Thomas Harrison Jr., 'house carpenter,' the two-story side hall/parlor clapboard house is the oldest two story dwelling in St. Michaels. It stands prominently on the town harbor adjacent the town PARK. The house is fitted with late eighteenth century style woodwork. The floors are wide plank heart of pine, and the windows have very old glass. The federal style stair, the raised six panel doors, and the period chair rails are original features.

The house is furnished with antique and reproduction furniture in keeping with the historic nature of the house.

A floor plan is avalable by clicking on the link below.

On the first floor of the original or 'Harrison House' are the side hall (foyer) and a large PARLOR (living room) with plenty of seating and a spectacular view of St. Michaels Harbor. To the rear of the living room is the LIBRARY having a fireplace, books, a television, stereo, games, cards and puzzles, and the DINING ROOM which can comfortably seat ten. To the rear of the dining room is a one story wing which houses a large, fully equipped KITCHEN. Also on the first floor is a DEN having a queen sleep sofa, a fireplace and a half bath.

For relaxing outside on the property, the house offers a brick PATIO facing the harbor and the Miles River, and a covered PORCH facing the white picket fence enclosed back yard and gardens.

The second floor of the Harrison house includes the MASTER BEDROOM having a queen size poster bed and a twin trundle bed, a full bath, and an adjacent small sitting or READING ROOM which has a twin sofa bed. The second story of the rear portion of the house includes the BLUE ROOM having a queen bed, an adjacent 7X7 room with a twin bed, a full bath, and the 8X8 PEACH ROOM having a twin bed. Up a private spiral staircase from the DEN is the 15X11 WING BEDROOM with dormer windows, having a full size converted (mattress and box spring) rope bed and a full bath.

The third floor of the Harrison House is the ATTIC having two rooms including one full bed.

There are water views from almost every room of the house.

Also available for rent are four early 19th century two bedroom fully restored cottages located within one block of the the Thomas Harrison House (click link below).

Seasonal, week and weekend rentals available all year-round.

About Thomas Byrne

I purchased the Thomas Harrison house in 1991 and restored it over the next few years. The process of research and restoration of this house, built when George Washington was President, greatly increased my interest in historic architecture and the history of St. Michaels. This interest lead to the purchase and restoration of the nearby Washington Melson, Thomas Blades and John Bruff houses (click on link for info on these two bedroom properties).

Why Thomas Byrne chose Chesapeake Bay

The combination of the waterfront location, architecture and the historic character of the area, as well as the residents of St. Michaels, make this a very special place.

What makes this house unique

This house sits prominently on the harbor in St. Michaels with wonderful water views. It is the ONLY large vacation rental house in Town. Walking distance to everything... shops, restaurants, museums, parks, pool and other attractions. Adjacent cottages can be rented if size of party exceeds 9.

So Special

  • 5 of 5

We are just finishing up our Labor Day weekend getaway at the Thomas Harrison House. All earlier reviews praise the location, the lovely, cared for home with special touches in every room and the accommodating owner. All I can add is my resounding agreement to the uniqueness and quality of this lovely, picturesque home. What a treat to stay here! We've had a wonderful time. Don't hesitate to rent; you will not regret your decision.

St. Michael's Island was fun to explore; to be able to walk to all sorts of entertainment in this charming town was wonderful! Do visit the Maritime museum it's a great source of information and history of the area (as are the books on the coffee tables in the house). Kayaking was beautiful on the San Domingo creek-paddled right by 3 great blue heron. Enjoyed good meals at many local establishments with the best crabcakes-in our opinion-at Bistro St. Michaels. Enjoy! It's a lovely getaway place!

Great location, wonderful large family home

  • 4 of 5

Just returned from a wonderful spring break at this home. We all felt like we had been staying in an incredible colonial home, full of 18th century charm with secret doors and tucked away rooms. Truly charming, particularly the large eat-in kitchen. And the location is unbeatable - right on the water yet in the middle of everything. Don't expect the most up-to-date appliances or cookware (the kitchen has been well used over the years - the only reason not to give this house a 5 star rating which it otherwise deserves) but that's all part of the charm. Thanks Tom for a magical stay in St. Michael's!

Beautiful Historic home in a perfect location.

  • 4 of 5

This is an amazing home right on the harbor in the heart of St. michaels. It has been lovingly restored . We loved the beautiful antiques, wide plank flooring ,water views and tranquil setting. It's within easy walking distance of coffee shops, restaurants ,pubs and a wide variety of shops , antique, clothing, souvenir and even design stores.

We were a multigenerational group and everyone was delighted with their stay.

The only recommendation I would make is an upgrade on the bed linens and towels. They were perfectly clean and adequate but some fluffy new linens would elevate the home to truly 5 star

The owner was responsive and addressed the few issues we had in a professional ,prompt and reasonable manner.

I would highly recommend this home .

Nice Location

  • 3 of 5

House is in a great location. Only a couple of blocks from main street and the museum. Plenty of room for the seven of us. We had a great time visiting the shops, restaurants and the museum in St. Michaels. I understand that the house is old and that’s part of it’s the charm. But the house could use some basic maintenance. A step to the upper level was broken. A couple of the faucets were difficult to operate and need to replaced. The house was furnished with antiques and other well-worn items. The sofas in the living room were thread bare and the cushioning was poking out. One end of the dining room table was held up with a stack of books.

Owner's Response: The "broken step" (cracked lip of a single step going to attic) has been repaired. All faucets are well maintained and in good working order. Dining table leg has been adjusted (tenant had left magazine under leg of dining table to level table). Sofas that had developed a few very small sun damage holes have been replaced.

Girls Weekend Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in the Thomas Harrison house for our 29th University Reunion Girls Weekend. The location and proximity to sights, shopping and restaurants was ideal! It was very clean. The living room and dining room were a good size for us all to convene and talk for hours. Bedrooms were very comfortable, though the upper (third) floor bedroom (with two beds) would be a challenge for older folks. We loved the food at Theo's, Ava's and Limoncello's. We also rented bikes on Talbot Street for one afternoon. Everything was walking distance.
