Saint Michaels House Rental Photos and Description

House, 6 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-9)

The historic Thomas Harrison House is a large fully updated 18th century vacation rental house located on the harbor and the town park in the center of St. Michaels. The house has beautiful water views and is situated within walking distance of all museums, shops (including grocery stores and drug stores), restaurants, farmer's market, town pool, tennis courts, library and other attractions.

A perfect location for family, families, or a group of friends vacationing, or attending weddings, reunions, or other events in St. Michaels and its surrounding areas.

Built around 1795 (while George Washington was President!) by Thomas Harrison Jr., 'house carpenter,' the two-story side hall/parlor clapboard house is the oldest two story dwelling in St. Michaels. It stands prominently on the town harbor adjacent the town PARK. The house is fitted with late eighteenth century style woodwork. The floors are wide plank heart of pine, and the windows have very old glass. The federal style stair, the raised six panel doors, and the period chair rails are original features.

The house is furnished with antique and reproduction furniture in keeping with the historic nature of the house.

A floor plan is avalable by clicking on the link below.

On the first floor of the original or 'Harrison House' are the side hall (foyer) and a large PARLOR (living room) with plenty of seating and a spectacular view of St. Michaels Harbor. To the rear of the living room is the LIBRARY having a fireplace, books, a television, stereo, games, cards and puzzles, and the DINING ROOM which can comfortably seat ten. To the rear of the dining room is a one story wing which houses a large, fully equipped KITCHEN. Also on the first floor is a DEN having a fireplace and half bath.

For relaxing outside on the property, the house offers a brick PATIO facing the harbor and the Miles River, and a covered PORCH facing the white picket fence enclosed back yard and gardens.

The second floor of the Harrison house includes the MASTER BEDROOM having a queen size poster bed and a twin trundle bed, a full bath, and an adjacent small sitting or READING ROOM which has a twin sofa bed. The second story of the rear portion of the house includes the BLUE ROOM having a queen bed, an adjacent 7X7 room with a twin bed, a full bath, and the 8X8 PEACH ROOM having a twin bed. Up a private spiral staircase from the DEN is the 15X11 WING BEDROOM with dormer windows, having a full size converted (mattress and box spring) rope bed and a full bath.

The third floor of the Harrison House is the ATTIC having two rooms including one full bed.

There are water views from almost every room of the house.

Also available for rent are four early 19th century two bedroom fully restored cottages located within one block of the the Thomas Harrison House (click link below).

Seasonal, week and weekend rentals available all year-round.

About Thomas Byrne

I purchased the Thomas Harrison house in 1991 and restored it over the next few years. The process of research and restoration of this house, built when George Washington was President, greatly increased my interest in historic architecture and the history of St. Michaels. This interest lead to the purchase and restoration of the nearby Washington Melson, Thomas Blades and John Bruff houses (click on link for info on these two bedroom properties).

Thomas Byrne purchased this house in 1991

Why Thomas Byrne chose Chesapeake Bay

The combination of the waterfront location, architecture and the historic character of the area, as well as the residents of St. Michaels, make this a very special place.

What makes this house unique

This house sits prominently on the harbor in St. Michaels with wonderful water views. It is the ONLY large vacation rental house in Town. Walking distance to everything... shops, restaurants, museums, parks, pool and other attractions. Adjacent cottages can be rented if size of party exceeds 9.

So Special

  • 5 of 5

We are just finishing up our Labor Day weekend getaway at the Thomas Harrison House. All earlier reviews praise the location, the lovely, cared for home with special touches in every room and the accommodating owner. All I can add is my resounding agreement to the uniqueness and quality of this lovely, picturesque home. What a treat to stay here! We've had a wonderful time. Don't hesitate to rent; you will not regret your decision.

St. Michael's Island was fun to explore; to be able to walk to all sorts of entertainment in this charming town was wonderful! Do visit the Maritime museum it's a great source of information and history of the area (as are the books on the coffee tables in the house). Kayaking was beautiful on the San Domingo creek-paddled right by 3 great blue heron. Enjoyed good meals at many local establishments with the best crabcakes-in our opinion-at Bistro St. Michaels. Enjoy! It's a lovely getaway place!

Nice Location

  • 3 of 5

House is in a great location. Only a couple of blocks from main street and the museum. Plenty of room for the seven of us. We had a great time visiting the shops, restaurants and the museum in St. Michaels. I understand that the house is old and that’s part of it’s the charm. But the house could use some basic maintenance. A step to the upper level was broken. A couple of the faucets were difficult to operate and need to replaced. The house was furnished with antiques and other well-worn items. The sofas in the living room were thread bare and the cushioning was poking out. One end of the dining room table was held up with a stack of books.

Girls Weekend Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We stayed in the Thomas Harrison house for our 29th University Reunion Girls Weekend. The location and proximity to sights, shopping and restaurants was ideal! It was very clean. The living room and dining room were a good size for us all to convene and talk for hours. Bedrooms were very comfortable, though the upper (third) floor bedroom (with two beds) would be a challenge for older folks. We loved the food at Theo's, Ava's and Limoncello's. We also rented bikes on Talbot Street for one afternoon. Everything was walking distance.

Jane

  • 5 of 5

We were in St Michael's for our son's wedding. Other family rented nearby properties. This house was perfect for our needs! Large kitchen and laundry area made life easy. We were close to downtown, the grocery store (walked for groceries!), the wedding venue (Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum), bars and restaurants. There was plenty of room for the 8 of us and the varied living spaces allowed for visiting in small groups or large. The dining tables accommodated us with several guests for meals. Brick patio had rocking chairs for enjoying the outdoors, visiting. Harbor views from many rooms. We were even able to bring family dogs! Can't wait to go back!

What a Spectacular Spot!

  • 5 of 5

My family found this VRBO house online and we rented it for our son's wedding weekend in St. Michaels in September - sight unseen. What we found was a spectacular house on a beautiful site! Owners, Thomas and Amanda, were responsive to every email, and every request. The rehearsal dinner was a 5 min walk to the Town Dock Restaurant, the Groomsmen arrived by boat for dressing in the 2 front salons, the rehearsal and the ceremony were a 5 min walk to the Church and all the guests were enamored by the house décor and history at the Stragglers Breakfast the morning after the wedding. We used the patio for grilling and rented the 2 outer cottages for family members as well. Both the house and its location were really spectacular and I would recommend it highly - we aim to go back soon and just play tourist this time - perhaps for our son and daughter in law's first anniversary? It was that memorable and the house made it all work effortlessly.

Incredible part of history

  • 5 of 5

The Thomas Harrison House is special. St. Michael's is all about the War of 1812 and early American history. At this place you really feel part of it, it was built before the War of 1812. Everything is completely updated, but with the appropriate respect for history (furnishings, prints, etc.) The location is also terrific, you are right on the water, and you can walk to almost everything in the town.
