The historic Thomas Harrison House is a large fully updated 18th century vacation rental house located on the harbor and the town park in the center of St. Michaels. The house has beautiful water views and is situated within walking distance of all museums, shops (including grocery stores and drug stores), restaurants, farmer's market, town pool, tennis courts, library and other attractions.
A perfect location for family, families, or a group of friends vacationing, or attending weddings, reunions, or other events in St. Michaels and its surrounding areas.
Built around 1795 (while George Washington was President!) by Thomas Harrison Jr., 'house carpenter,' the two-story side hall/parlor clapboard house is the oldest two story dwelling in St. Michaels. It stands prominently on the town harbor adjacent the town PARK. The house is fitted with late eighteenth century style woodwork. The floors are wide plank heart of pine, and the windows have very old glass. The federal style stair, the raised six panel doors, and the period chair rails are original features.
A floor plan is avalable by contacting the owner or clicking on the link below.
On the first floor of the original or 'Harrison House' are the side hall (foyer) and a large PARLOR (living room) with plenty of seating and a spectacular view of St. Michaels Harbor. To the rear of the living room is the LIBRARY having a fireplace, books, a television, stereo, games, cards and puzzles, and the DINING ROOM which can comfortably seat ten. To the rear of the dining room is a one story wing which houses a large, fully equipped KITCHEN. Also on the first floor is a DEN having a fireplace and half bath.
For relaxing outside on the property, the house offers a brick PATIO facing the harbor and the Miles River, and a covered PORCH facing the white picket fence enclosed back yard and gardens.
The second floor of the Harrison house includes the MASTER BEDROOM having a queen size poster bed and a twin trundle bed, a full bath, and an adjacent small sitting or READING ROOM which has a twin sofa bed. The second story of the rear portion of the house includes the BLUE ROOM having a full size converted rope bed, an adjacent 7X7 room with a twin bed, a full bath, and the 8X8 PEACH ROOM having a twin bed. Up a private spiral staircase from the DEN is the 15X11 WING BEDROOM with dormer windows, having a full size converted rope bed and a full bath.
The third floor of the Harrison House is the ATTIC having two rooms including one full bed.
There are water views from almost every room of the house.
Also available for rent are two early 19th century two bedroom fully restored cottages located within one block of the the Thomas Harrison House (click link below).
Seasonal, week and weekend rentals available all year-round.
I purchased the Thomas Harrison house in 1991 and restored it over the next few years. The process of research and restoration of this house, built when George Washington was President, greatly increased my interest in historic architecture and the history of St. Michaels. This interest lead to the purchase and restoration of the nearby Washington Melson, Thomas Blades and John Bruff houses (click on link for info on these two bedroom properties).
Thomas Byrne purchased this house in 1991
The combination of the waterfront location, architecture and the historic character of the area, as well as the residents of St. Michaels, make this a very special place.
This house sits prominently on the harbor in St. Michaels with wonderful water views. It is the ONLY large vacation rental house in Town. Walking distance to everything... shops, restaurants, museums, parks, pool and other attractions.
We had a handful of friends and family attending a wedding in St. Michael's and rented the Thomas Harrison House for a long weekend. It was perfect! The location was great (close enough to everything that I was able to leave the wedding to check on my kiddo and walk back before dinner). The home was authentic with lots of cute nooks and spaces to discover. My favorite moment of the trip was all of us hanging out on the patio on rocking chairs having morning coffee. Great amenities and we would absolutely rent again. My only complaint is that third floor was HOT during mid-July and the AC didn't cool that space effectively.
This was a family rental for 6 to celebrate family birthday.
Upon arrival - location is perfect with a beautiful view of the water and close to restaurants and downtown. It was upon entering the home that we were disappointed. Following lists the issues we encountered:
- All three beds were very uncomfortable and are in desperate need of mattress replacement.
- Bathroom lines are threadbare.
- Kitchen counters sticky and there were ants on the counters.
- Upon our arrival we foud a dirty coffee pot with coffee grinds left in the basket.
- Insufficient kitchenware and cutlery. Toaster did not work properly.
- Very uncomfortable furniture - sofas in main parlor were ripped.
- Peeling paint in upstairs bathroom.
- Water stain on ceiling in entry.
- Insufficient air conditioning - we recognize this is an historic home but in July if the a/c does not work properly; fans would be a good resource in many of the upstairs bedrooms.
Another family member has an historic home on parallel street - historic integrity has been maintained outside and inside. Had we not had this home as our base where we could relax, I'm not sure we would have lasted as long as we did.
We reviewed this home and comments thoroughly on this website before we booked the reservation -- nothing but glowing comments which makes no sense when you see what we encountered on our stay.
The house is very old but we'll kept. There is a surprise around every corner. There were 11 of us and it never felt crowded. Convenient to downtown St. Michaels. Views are lovely but we were there on a rainy weekend so not as spectacular. Would stay again if we visit again.
Despite the unseasonable weather, we had an awesome time! The home was a wonderful environment.
I will definitely consider returning!
This place is fantastic! The house is a block and a half from St. Michael’s main street and is situated on the beautiful St. Michaels harbor. Our group watched the boats come and go, played croquet, and barbecued in the back yard. One final point – the owner also rents cottages across the street, so he can accommodate groups even larger than the number that this house accommodates. Highly recommend this great house situated on the water in beautiful and relaxing St. Michaels.
The Thomas Harrison House is one of a kind...we stayed over a weekend with another party of 5 and there were plenty of rooms and beds for us all. With the house being 225 years old in its main part, over 170 years old in its addition, and authentically furnished throughout, we felt like we'd stepped back in time - but without sacrificing modern comforts! Great location, right on the harbor and a short walk to St Michaels' best shops and restaurants. And the spacious private yard, with horsehoes and croquet supplied, was an extra treat. Amazing that we were just 80 miles from DC; the peacefulness made us feel like we were 1000 miles away. Can't wait to come back.
