About the property

House, 6 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-9)

The historic yet fully updated Thomas Harrison House is the premier vacation rental home in St. Michaels and has been rented as such since 1992. It is the only large vacation rental in the Town. The 18th century house (built while George Washington was President) is located on the harbor and the town park in the center of St. Michaels. The house has beautiful water views and is situated within walking distance of all museums, shops (including grocery stores and drug stores), restaurants, farmer's market, town pool, tennis courts, library, and other attractions.

A perfect location for family, families, or a group of friends vacationing, or attending weddings, reunions, or other events in St. Michaels and its surrounding areas.

Built around 1795 by Thomas Harrison Jr., 'house carpenter,' the two-story side hall/parlor clapboard house is the oldest two story dwelling in St. Michaels. It stands prominently on the town harbor adjacent the town PARK. The house is fitted with late eighteenth century style woodwork. The floors are wide plank heart of pine, and the windows have very old glass. The federal style stair, the raised six panel doors, and the period chair rails are original features.

The house is furnished with antique and reproduction furniture in keeping with the historic nature of the house.

A floor plan is avalable by clicking on the link below.

On the first floor of the original or 'Harrison House' are the side hall (foyer) and a large PARLOR (living room) with plenty of seating and a spectacular view of St. Michaels Harbor. To the rear of the living room is the LIBRARY having a fireplace, books, a television, stereo, games, cards and puzzles, and the DINING ROOM which can comfortably seat ten. To the rear of the dining room is a one story wing which houses a large, fully equipped KITCHEN. Also on the first floor is a DEN having a queen sleep sofa, a fireplace and a half bath.

For relaxing outside on the property, the house offers a brick PATIO facing the harbor and the Miles River, and a covered PORCH facing the white picket fence enclosed back yard and gardens.

The second floor of the Harrison house includes the MASTER BEDROOM having a queen size poster bed and a twin trundle bed, a full bath, and an adjacent small sitting or READING ROOM which has a twin sofa bed. The second story of the rear portion of the house includes the BLUE ROOM having a queen bed, an adjacent 7X7 room with a twin bed, a full bath, and the 8X8 PEACH ROOM having a twin bed. Up a private spiral staircase from the DEN is the 15X11 WING BEDROOM with dormer windows, having a full size converted (mattress and box spring) rope bed and a full bath.

The third floor of the Harrison House is the ATTIC having two rooms including one full bed.

There are water views from almost every room of the house.

Also available for rent are four early 19th century two bedroom fully restored cottages located within one block of the the Thomas Harrison House (click link below).

Seasonal, week and weekend rentals available all year-round.

About Thomas Byrne

I purchased the Thomas Harrison house in 1991 and restored it over the next few years. The process of research and restoration of this house, built when George Washington was President, greatly increased my interest in historic architecture and the history of St. Michaels. This interest lead to the purchase and restoration of the nearby Washington Melson, Thomas Blades and John Bruff houses (click on link for info on these two bedroom properties).

Why Thomas Byrne chose Saint Michaels

The combination of the waterfront location, architecture and the historic character of the area, as well as the residents of St. Michaels, make this a very special place.

This house sits prominently on the harbor in St. Michaels with wonderful water views. It is the ONLY large vacation rental house in Town. Walking distance to everything... shops, restaurants, museums, parks, pool and other attractions. Adjacent cottages can be rented if size of party exceeds 9.

So Special

  • 5 of 5

We are just finishing up our Labor Day weekend getaway at the Thomas Harrison House. All earlier reviews praise the location, the lovely, cared for home with special touches in every room and the accommodating owner. All I can add is my resounding agreement to the uniqueness and quality of this lovely, picturesque home. What a treat to stay here! We've had a wonderful time. Don't hesitate to rent; you will not regret your decision.

St. Michael's Island was fun to explore; to be able to walk to all sorts of entertainment in this charming town was wonderful! Do visit the Maritime museum it's a great source of information and history of the area (as are the books on the coffee tables in the house). Kayaking was beautiful on the San Domingo creek-paddled right by 3 great blue heron. Enjoyed good meals at many local establishments with the best crabcakes-in our opinion-at Bistro St. Michaels. Enjoy! It's a lovely getaway place!

Wonderful in all regards

It doesn't get any better than this. Location right in the center of town, walking distance to everything, lots of privacy. Superb. Note: This is a spectacular historic home, must like old houses.

great histoic home

  • 5 of 5

We were a combined extended family staying in the house for a wedding that was held at the Maritime Museum . Indeed the combined family and wedding party rented 4 homes from Thomas. The house was wonderful with larger than expected public spaces on the ground floor. As expected for a house from 1795 the floors are not level in many spaces and the rooms are on the smaller size, but wonderful and very well furnished. The location is prefect --in easy walking distance of all of the historic areas. I highly recommend it.

Nice spot, but not for everyone!

  • 3 of 5

This house is located in a fantastic part of St. Michaels, MD. That said it is really appropriate only for those who have an keen appreciation for antiquities. If you prefer a rental with modern conveniences and up to date features this would not be for you. Unfortunately, we had a nonagenarian in tow and the uneven floors, dimly lit and oddly configured bathrooms were difficult for him to manage. Obviously there is no mention of this in the marketing materials so let the renter beware.

Owner's Response: Sorry your nonagenarian had difficulty at the house. However, your review is misleading. My parents (and many guests over the years) who are in their 90s have had no difficulty getting around the house. There is a den the first floor that has a sleep sofa for those who have trouble with stairs. The Thomas Harrison house is a classic eastern shore 18th century house that has been restored and has all modern conveniences. The bathrooms are well laid out but are not as large as a modern house or hotel (there were no bathrooms in houses when the house was built). The house has been furnished (including lighting by table lamps, chandeliers and wall sconces), to emphasize history and character. To state that it is "really appropriate for only for those who have a keen appreciation for antiquities" is wrong. If that were the case, why have more people stayed at this vacation rental than any other in St. Michaels?

Charming House in a Great Location

  • 4 of 5

The charm of the Thomas Harrison house is undeniable. From the old random width floorboards to the antique window glass, you are surrounded by reminders of the past.

Our group of 5 seniors had a pleasant stay in St. Michaels. The location of the house is ideal for walking to shops, restaurants and the Maritime Museum through the charming back streets of the town.

Some features available in a newer building might be missed at first, but one easily adjusts. The house was very clean. As some other reviewers had mentioned, upgrading the towels, etc. would be an appreciated plus. Also, additional electrical outlets, especially in bathrooms, would be a good idea.

I would recommend the Thomas Harrison House to anyone planning a visit to St. Michaels.
