About the property

Chalet Bärli

The apartments are on the ground floor of a typical Swiss chalet. There is a large garden, a meadow with a river at the bottom and stunning views of the mountains. A small shop is next door and fresh milk is available from a local farm. The bus outside the door takes you to the shops at Lauterbrunnen (8 minutes) and to the Schilthorn cable car station (3 minutes). These give you easy access to Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg and Grindlewald on one side of the valley, and Murren and the Schilthorn on the other. All areas are superb for a variety of winter activities between December and April, while for the rest of the year there are unparalleled opportunities for walking and hiking among the meadows and mountains as well as many other activities such as river rafting, hang-gliding and mountain biking. The apartments have been redecorated and refurbished to a high standard and are well-equipped. There is ample parking space. The English owners are on site.

Winter Details: The Jungfrau region is superb for all types of winter sports activity, and Chalet Bärli is perfectly situated for you to take advantage of this. Easy and quick transport from the front door takes you to the centres of Wengen and Murren from where you have access to more than 44 railways cable cars and ski lifts, taking you to over 213 kilometres of pistes, more than 100 kilometres of well-prepared walking paths, 50 kilometres of sledging runs and 30 kilometres of cross-country skiing paths (one of which passes through our meadow). The winter sports pass gives you unlimited travel in the area from our door, whatever you do. There is also a walking and sledging pass allowing you access to everything except ski lifts. Open-air ice rinks can be enjoyed in Murren and Wengen, with ice-karting in Lauterbrunnen

Summer Details: The area around Chalet Bärli provides excellent walking to suit all tastes : woodland, riverside, meadow and mountain. You can start from our front door, or take transport to other areas. Within easy reach is the Schynige Platte Alpine Garden, worth a visit in itself, but also the start of a superb ridge walk to Grindlewald. The lakes of Brienz and Thun are at nearby Interlaken, their wonderful paddle steamers will take you to attractive old places such as Brienz and its wood carvers; Thun and Spiez; more mountain railways; and the living museum of Ballenberg which gives an open-air survey of Switzerland on one site. Sports such as para- and hang-gliding, mountain biking, river rafting, wind surfing, sailing and horse riding are all easily available. Travel passes can be obtained locally, making a visit at this time of year extremely good value.

General Details: Good restaurants are within easy reach at Lauterbrunnen, Stechelberg, Murren and Wengen, providing a splendid sampling of Swiss food, one of the essential components of any Swiss holiday. The cable car to the revolving restaurant at the top of the Schilthorn with its superb views is open most of the year, while the railway to the Jungfraujoch (the highest in Europe) is open 365 days. The rail services from the major airports keep the same times throughout the year, seven days a week, and the local roads for public transport are kept open, whatever the weather.

Perfect location to visit Lauterbrunnen Valley

  • 5 of 5

My fiance and I had an amazing stay with Wilf and Wendy in July 2016. The house is perfectly situated to see Lauterbrunnen, Stechelberg, Murren, and Wengen all in a short amount of time. The sign for the bus is literally attached to the house and buses come every 30 min. during the day. The apartment was clean, updated, and the beauty of the valley surrounds you. Waterfalls are visible from the window and the garden is stunning. Wilf and Wendy live upstairs, but you will not even know they are there, unless you need them! A perfect mix of being available to answer questions but leaving you to enjoy your vacation. This spot is not to be missed, we promised ourselves we will come back and now we dream of retiring to the Alps to have a chalet with a HomeAway in the basement!

Thank you Wilf and Wendi!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed in the Grosshorn apartment for the New Year 2015. Dear Wilf and Wendy, thank you for our great unforgettable ski vacation! Sorry for our late arrival! Wilf was so kind to greet us even in the midnight! There is no better ski area but Jungfrau! The welcome pack could not be more generous! The linen could not be more luxury! The kitchen could not be equipped better! The hosts could not be more friendly! The post bus stop could not be closer to the property! What could be better is this bus schedule! I mean the connection between the mountain railway and the post bus in Lauterbrunnen is too short for after-ski shopping. But this is obviously beyond the owner's control. Hope to return one day!

The Place of Dreams

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I stayed for 4 nights last May, 2010. The location was quiet and beautiful, and the apartment superb. The owners, two very nice people, were very respectful of their guests' privacy, extremely helpful, and the friendliness and warmth which which we were received was very pleasant indeed. The fresh cold bio-milk at the farm next door is not to be missed, and the owners' homemade preserves are a fabulous treat for the palate at a very reasonable price. The bus stop is right outside the entrance to the apartment - as easy as it gets! The area? Well, it is stunning, simply put. The Bernese-Oberland is a magical wonderland of beauty in combination with very friendly people, great food, and stunning scenery; it is a great value, and the perfect getaway place in the center of Europe. Make sure you take a ride with one of the paragliders! The best money you'll ever spend while on vacation, anywhere. Safe, peaceful, and breathtaking.

Wonderful stay in a beautiful location

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful few days staying at Chalet Barli. The owners Wilf and Wendy were really friendly and helpful. The location was perfect for our car free holiday with the bus stop just outside and the amazing Swiss public transport service not failing us once! Memorable trips included the Jungfraujoch and the Schilthorn and some superb walking. The apartment was equipped with everything we needed, even to make our own fondue! I will be sending my friends and family in the direction of Chalet Barli!

This property was perfect .The location with bus stops outside the door was better than staying in Lauterbrunnen. With easy access to Wengen and

Murren in one direction and down the valley to other train and gondola conections and of couse Interlaken and the ferries on both lakes. Our hosts could not be more helpful and the accomodation was very clean with everything you would need. This is an ideal place to base yourself to go on lots of trips and walks.

Lauterbrunnen valley, the valley of the waterfalls, is a wide glaciated valley with steep cliffs on either side giving access to the mountains of the Jungfrau region. It was the inspiration for Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'. The famous Trummelbach falls inside the Jungfrau are 400 m from our front door. 30 mins walk along the valley brings you to Stechelberg with good food and access to superb mountain walking. Access to Murren and the Schilthorn with it's revolving restaurant is 15 mins walk away. A similar walk in the other direction along the stunning valley takes you to the Lauterbrunnen shops, restaurants, banks and post office. Lauterbrunnen station gives access to the car-free mountain village of Wengen and the Jungfraujoch. Interlaken, 20 mins away with its wide variety of shops is also the railway terminus for journeys from the rest of the world, and the airports of Zurich, Basel, Geneva and Berne. In less than three and a half hours you can be at our front door. Car travel from the airports is easy (2 hrs from Zurich).

Ski: Good quality skiing, snowboarding and sledging can be had all around us. The Schilthorn black runs start at 2970 metres at the top of the highest winter sports arena in the Bernese Oberland; in Grindelwald there is the longest sledge run in the world at 15 kilometres; and there is the Schreckfield Superpipe, one of the world's biggest halfpipes. There are good children's slopes at Wengen and Murren, with a creche. A wide range of pistes to suit all abilities can be found everywhere. Ski and snowboard schools are located at Wengen and Murren, providing individual and group tuition for all levels and most languages, including English, and some English instructors.
