A small shop is next door and fresh milk is available from a local farm. The bus outside the door takes you to the shops at Lauterbrunnen (8 minutes) and to the Schilthorn cable car station (3 minutes). These give you easy access to Wengen, Kleine Scheidegg and Grindlewald on one side of the valley, and Murren and the Schilthorn on the other. All areas are superb for a variety of winter activities between December and April, while for the rest of the year there are unparalleled opportunities for walking and hiking among the meadows and mountains as well as many other activities such as river rafting, hang-gliding and mountain biking. We are a young couple from Canada, we stayed at Wilf and Wendy's apartment for three nights and absolutely loved it. The two apartments are located on the 1st floor of a 3 storey house. Wilf and Wendy, a lovely retired couple from the UK, live on the top 2 floors.
The apartment has a spacious living room with views of the snowy mountain tops, a bedroom looking out onto the field behind the house and the falls, a large clean bathroom and a small kitchen that is very well equipped with anything you might need for cooking in (which we ended up doing because the restaurants are quite pricey in this area. Avoid Stechelberg hotel restaurant, the food tasted like it came from the freezer and cost 30 francs a meal! There is a Co-op grocery store in Lauterbrunnen and in Interlaken with fresh locally grown produce, good meat and cheese). If the weather is good you can BBQ. Overall the apartment was extremely clean and the beds were comfortable.
Wilf and Wendy were pleasant hosts, communicating promptly, taking care of our requests, attentive, caring and just generally very nice. Wendy makes amazing jam - make sure to ask her for it. We brought 3 different kinds back with us! They also made sure that there was plenty of information in the apartment about the area's attractions which we found helpful.
Attractions. It all depends on the weather. We didn't know this, but June is an iffy month and you never know if you will get any sunshine at all. We ended up having 2 rainy days and an amazing not a cloud in the sky day, so you really never know and can't control it, especially in the mountains. The valley looks gorgeous even in the rain, though it makes it difficult to enjoy certain attractions when the clouds are covering up the view. On a rainy day visit the Trümmelbach Falls - less than 5 min drive from the apartment; St. Beatus Caves; and drive to the town of Thun. We found that having a car was a must for us. The bus, train, cable car system is great and punctual but it costs way more than a car. Bus from Lauterbrunnen to the apartment was 3 francs pp one way. Car ride is less than 10 min.
On a nice day we visited Schilthorn (the very top) - go first thing in the morning and do the breakfast in a rotating restaurant (106 francs pp including cable cars there and back). On the way back we got off in Murren, took the 1.5 hr walk to Grütschalp, cable car down to Lauterbrunnen, train up to Wengen (absolutely recommend - the view is unbeatable!).
We had the absolute joy of spending 3 nights in the Breithorn apartment. Wendy and Wilf made us feel like family and at the end of our stay we didn't want to leave. The wild flowers were out in the Alpine Meadows and there was enough snow at Kleine Schidegg for our daughter to experience it for the first time, great family memories. The apartment is super clean, very comfortable and the wifi works really well. Cooking facilities are great - there's everything you need to self-cater easily. Wendy and Wilf gave us excellent info on where to go, how to get there and what to do that's also interesting for kids. Make sure you get some bio-milk from the farm next door and don't miss out on bringing the goats in and watching the neighbour's cows come down the road. If you're lucky, they might even have their bells on!
The views from this property will absolutely blow you away. We found ourselves thinking we were looking at a mural on the wall but it is the breathtaking view of the Swiss Alps. Wilf and Wendy were great hosts, anything that we needed they would either supply or give advice on.
We loved the walking tracks at the back. The only issue you will need to be aware of if you don't have your own transport is the property is located 4-5 km out of the town. The buses run regularly and you would not change its location for anything in the world. Thank you Wilf and Wendy for a great experience.
My husband, another couple, and I stayed in this wonderful apartment for three nights. The hosts, Wilf and Wendy, were wonderful and helpful and responsive. The apartment is so clean and it was wonderful to meet the cows next door and buy milk from the farm! At night, laying in bed I could hear the enchanting sound of cow bells and waterfalls. We walked to town on the wonderful "old road" and even walked down the valley to catch the gondola. If I am lucky enough to come back to Switzerland, I would absolutely book this apartment again! I highly recommend it! It is such a blessing to have a comfortable place to stay and such warm hosts when one is traveling. Thank you Wilf and Wendy!
My family and I stayed at the Apartment Breithorn and Apartment Grosshorn for 3 nights in September and what can we say, this place is heaven! The location of the chalet couldn't be more perfect, just one stop away from the Trummelbach Falls and 2 stops away from the cable cars to Schilthorn.
Both apartments were in perfect condition, extremely clean, Wilf and Wendy's attention to details made both the apartments a little home away from home. This is definitely one of the highlight of our 16 days Europe trip and my family and I are already thinking of going back for another trip!
Look no further! This is it!
We stayed 3 nights in this little slice of heaven. The valley was more than we ever could have imagined, breathtaking is an understatement! The apartment was wonderful. It was impeccably clean, well equiped and very large. It offered all the amenities you'd need including some basic supplies in the kitchen, wifi and a bus stop literally on the doorstep. We used the yard each evening, and enjoyed watching for BASE jumpers as we enjoyed a glass of wine and a beer. Wilf and Wendy were the most friendly and helpful home owners we have ever come across in all our travels (and this is the 5th time we have been to Europe and we generally use holiday homes as our base). They were punctual in returning emails and so helpful with anything we needed during our stay. I'd go so far as to say that the owners are what makes this chalet such a wonderful place to stay. They even invited us to watch Wendy in an evening performance of Swiss folk music and dance. Our only regret is we didn't stay longer...we will definitely be returning again! Thank you once again...look us up next time you are in Alberta :)
Lauterbrunnen valley, the valley of the waterfalls, is a wide glaciated valley with steep cliffs on either side giving access to the mountains of the Jungfrau region. It was the inspiration for Tolkien's 'The Hobbit'. The famous Trummelbach falls inside the Jungfrau are 400 m from our front door. 30 mins walk along the valley brings you to Stechelberg with good food and access to superb mountain walking. Access to Murren and the Schilthorn with it's revolving restaurant is 15 mins walk away. A similar walk in the other direction along the stunning valley takes you to the Lauterbrunnen shops, restaurants, banks and post office. Lauterbrunnen station gives access to the car-free mountain village of Wengen and the Jungfraujoch. Interlaken, 20 mins away with its wide variety of shops is also the railway terminus for journeys from the rest of the world, and the airports of Zurich, Basel, Geneva and Berne. In less than three and a half hours you can be at our front door. Car travel from the airports is easy (2 hrs from Zurich).
Ski: Good quality skiing, snowboarding and sledging can be had all around us. The Schilthorn black runs start at 2970 metres at the top of the highest winter sports arena in the Bernese Oberland; in Grindelwald there is the longest sledge run in the world at 15 kilometres; and there is the Schreckfield Superpipe, one of the world's biggest halfpipes. There are good children's slopes at Wengen and Murren, with a creche. A wide range of pistes to suit all abilities can be found everywhere. Ski and snowboard schools are located at Wengen and Murren, providing individual and group tuition for all levels and most languages, including English, and some English instructors.
