I retired from a career as a dentist and a business managment consultant in 2007. After running 38 Marathons I decided it was time to take it easy in Mexico
Dr. Robert L Fredericks purchased this house in 2007
I have known about San Miguel de Allende since 1975 and always wanted a custom built contemporary home. I found I could afford both in Mexico.
I enjoy living in a beautiful home and experiencing the wonderful warm culture of Mexico and my Mexican neighbors. It is like living in a small town with all the cultural amenities of a much larger city. Great restaurants, shopping, opera, art galleries, and an organic Frarmer's Market.
Bob, the owner was a very pleasant and nice man. The home itself is a perfect example of Mexican contemporary architecture. The Colonial Allende neighbor appears a little rough on the edges but we never felt unsafe and people were pleasant. We walked the streets at all hours. The property is within a 20 min walk of the Centro. Taxis run everywhere and they are very cheap, 50 pesos. Be prepared with good supportive shoes as the streets are all cobblestone and rough on your feet and ankles. There is a fair amount of noise at times but that seemed to be the culture more than the neighborhood. All in all it was a very good value and the home is beautiful. Well kept and equipped and for those of you who need WiFi and U.S. TV, Bob had that as well.
We found the food to be relatively inexpensive and good for the most part. For those of you looking to relocate to SMA the housing market is based on U.S. prices. Very expensive in the Centro area. On the outer edges not so bad in terms of pricing. The architecture is beautiful here.
Make sure to go to La Grutta, a hot spring grotto.
Do the hot air balloon ride, the Canada de la Virgen, pyramid. Botanical Gardens, Fabrica de Aurora, the Jardin, the Parroquia. There is a lot to do. The weather was fantastic!
Cafe Rama breakfast and lunch.
Lavanda cafe breakfast and lunch. Best
Moxie lunch and dinner. Best
Los Milagros lunch and dinner.
LA Luna roof top in the Rosewood Hotel for tapas and drinks at sunset. Incredible views. Best
Thanks Bob we had a great time!

This was our first visit to San Miguel and we will be back again soon! This Casita was so special, as was our "host with the most", Bob! He was a huge help to us while we were visiting and was always so accommodating! His home is conveniently located (not too close to the very active town), very well appointed, open and airy, safe, has great views, easy walk or taxi to town, close to restaurants and other activities....what more can I say!!! A gem of a "home away". If you're thinking of visiting it soon, you won't have any complaints about your stay..it's simply wonderful in every way!!! We just wish it was ours!!!!
Everything was as described on the website...modern, comfortable, and homey, in a residential neighborhood a colorful stroll or very short cab or bus ride from downtown. The owner is gracious and helpful, and is nearby if you need him. We tend to cook rather than eat meals out; if you do the same - or if you like flea markets - you MUST visit El Tianguis market on Tuesday! Even though we only had a week - nowhere near enough time to take in all of SMA - we had a wonderful time here. We hope to return for a longer stay.
i have stayed in San Miguel many times in the past. Never has my visit been so perfect. So much of the perfection was staying in this perfect Allende casita. A wonderful plus is Bob your wonderful host and a charming gentleman who is gracious and helpful in every way possible. Do let him help you with suggestions and any San Miguel questions.
The casita itself is a modern architectural gem .... perfectly furnished and equipped to make your stay one of grace and charm.
The bus to Centro is convenient and only forty cents U.S. Taxis are a modest $3. I found i thoroughly enjoyed making the easy trek on foot .... 20 minutes with small adventures and sights along the way .... which can make it 30 minutes.
A few recommendations .... Lolita a restaurant at Salida a Celaya 52 ....just a 5 minute walk from your casita. Great service .... fine food .... one of the most beautiful rooms in San Miguel. It is perfect for Sunday breakfast. The Longhorn 2 blocks further north has a great Thursday steak night and is a great local hangout. La Noche in Centro is a piano bar that is also a must visit.
A final note ....
Bob's casita would be my go to place in SMA .... except instead i am moving there.
One of the most beautiful places anywhere.
Beautiful modern casita in a great Mexican neighbourhood in San Miguel where everyone says Hola, buen dia!. We always felt totally safe at any time of day or night. The kitchen is very well equipped with great quality appliances and tools – everything that you need for preparing meals at home. The rooms are full of light and have great views. Furniture is stylish, functional and comfortable. Great bed with high quality linens. The water is drinkable due to a high tech purification system. The house is built to be green - very energy efficient. Easy, relatively flat (for San Miguel) walk into Centro (about 20 minutes), the Instituto, the organic market or over to Mega for groceries. The Ruta 7 bus (5 pesos!) is right at the end of the street and is a fun ride into town. Owner, Bob, was always very friendly and helpful, making our stay especially enjoyable.
Our experience with staying at the casita was nothing short of exceptional. The website photos are very accurate. The casita is spectacular and exceptionally clean. The kitchen was well equipped, the bed was very comfortable and the view from the roof top was great at night. Our visit to San Miguel was truly enhanced by Bob's welcoming hospitality and his his thoughtfulness in providing us with useful suggestions/ ideas of things to do as well as a binder of detailed instructions on using appliances, recommended restaurants, list of sites to visit, maps and the many personal touches. All were truly appreciated and served us well. The town was enchanting and from this location, the centre area is a pleasant 20-25 minute walk through a lovely authentic Mexican neighborhood. The centre area of town is very historic and filled with many great restaurants, museums, shops, parks, and a central library where we particularly enjoyed the coffee and pastries. We always choose to walk to and from the centre area even late at night and felt very safe, but a quick cab ride for is available for 30 pesos. A large Mega grocery store is less than a 10 minute walk away and there are also some good local restaurants right nearby on San Antonio Avenue. It is without hesitation, that we would recommend this property.
San Miguel de Allende is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
