About Pat Hanlon
We previously had a holiday home in the Dordogne, near Perigueux, then we decided to come and live in France but wanted a larger property. We found this property and we first visited the property on a cold winters day and we liked it a lot, even though there was quite a bit to do, particularly on the exterior, so now after living here for 10 years almost, we are pleased with the improvements and we really enjoy living here. We are both from Bradford, West Yorkshire but we spent 22 years living in other countries and places in UK, due to Adrian serving in HM Forces. Adrian had a job arranged with a French company from when we first arrived in France and is still working for the same company. So, we live and work here and intend to remain here.
Pat Hanlon purchased this Cottage in 2005
Why Pat Hanlon chose Marthon
Firstly, we love the location, we are in the countryside, it's very peaceful and quiet, yet very close to Marthon and Montbron for shopping and lots of other facilities. Close enough to Angouleme and good road and rail connections to the rest of France/Europe. The cottage is separate from our accommodation and we have our own pool and gardens, parking, etc and although we are on site (next door) we are available if required.
What makes this Cottage unique
The great thing for us about living here in this property is that we still feel as if we are on holiday, even though we live and work here and we work hard to keep the whole property in good order, inside and outside, it's still a holiday to us. Lots of sunshine (usually) and pretty much zero air pollution.

Lovely house, great location, relaxing holiday
We have just spent a lovely week at Pat and Adrian's charming house near Marthon. The accommodation is typically french, very comfortable and relaxing, and the salt water pool was perfect for lazy afternoons in the sun! The surrounding garden was a real bonus and the local area is lovely with some scenic walks and pretty little towns not too far away. The house itself was also a great location for attending our niece's wedding nearby.
Pat and Adrian were generous hosts who made us feel very welcome - we definitely wanted to stay for longer!
Absolutely amazing Holiday
We had the most amazing Holiday staying at pat and Adrians.
The gite is lovely, a real home from home.
It is well equipped with everything you could possibly need.
The pool was gorgeous and a welcome relief from the hot Sun.
Pat and Adrian were lovely hosts. Very welcoming and couldn't do more for us.
We highly recommend staying here.
Fab pool, great holiday.
We had a lovely week staying at the property in August 2018. The cottage is really well equipped; the outside space is a real highlight with a great outdooor dining area, and a further built in bbq area. Pat and Adrian are really friendly and helpful. The swimming pool is amazing, was really warm when we were there and is kept super clean.
The surrounding area is peaceful which suited us just fine, nice towns and good cycling nearby.
We always ensure that the property is well presented and prepared in terms of cleanliness, including the pool and outside areas.
The pool is checked daily at sunup to ensure the pool is balanced and safe for swimming.
The guests recycled items and household waste is removed daily straight after the pool check.
Potted flowers and the garden are watered when required, by us, during quiet hours or when guests are absent elsewhere, shopping, cycling, etc.
We are here when needed if an appliance fails or other issues, but keep a low profile so as not to disturb guests.
Great Place to stay
We had a lovely family holiday here. The cottage is clean and very well equipped, the pool is great too. Pat and Adrian are very welcoming and on hand should you need any thing.
The location is ideal. Very peaceful with beautiful views over sunflower fields. Supermarket is short drive away and the area has lots to do. I would highly recommend this holiday cottage.
Great place to stay
We rented this Gite because we were coming to the Chateau de la Coronne for a wedding. Let me say that this Gite is ideally placed for anyone visiting the area for the same reason. Notwithstanding the wonderful wedding we were the envy of several of our friends due to the superb accommodation and facilities La Borderie offers. We stayed for a week and this turned out on many levels to be a really good decision. The peace and quiet of the morning broken only by the screech of rooster or pheasant was incredible. We were very comfortable in this well equipped Gite and were very happy that the swimming pool was an ambient 75 degrees. So hats off to Pat and Adrian for our warm welcome and occasional assistance. We are missing you and La Borderie already!
We spent 3 absolutely wonderful weeks in Adrian and Sue's lovely cottage.
The cottage is in a perfect spot in a beautiful part of France, and is very private despite the owners house being a short walk away.
We had all the amenities we needed for a great holiday with spacious rear grassed terraces, a lovely pool area with sunbeds, and a wonderful veranda at the front of the cottage that was put to good use every evening for meals and drinks while we watched spectacular sunsets.
Inside, the cottage was equipped with everything we needed and more.. with plenty of room, comfortable furniture, and even UK TV to keep us up to date.
We enjoyed our days out to Piegut market, La Rochefoucauld, Angouleme and Brantome - All well worth a visit.
Our day at La Rochelle was also amazing and worth the long car journey.
Having spent many a holiday in France in the last 20 years or so, we can definitely say we have never stayed in more homely and comfortable place or had more welcoming and charming hosts than Adrian and Sue - we really enjoyed your company at our raclette evening and as your guests for the return fixtures.
We wish you every success in the future and we look forward to seeing you both again - we're sure that we will at some point in the not too distant future.
There is plenty to see and do nearby, with a horse riding centre close by, canoe/kayaking just 3km away on the River Tardoire and cycling through woods and the quiet countryside. One of the best outdoor karting tracks in South West France is just 15km. There is also an adventure course set in the tree tops in a tranquil wooded setting near Verneuil. Enjoy 10-pin bowling at Bassiere Badil - visited by Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie! Several lakes within 25km have facilities including bars, restaurants, lifeguards, diving platforms and beaches. Touring around beautiful châteaux such as La Rochefoucauld, Varaignes and Mareuil or exploring the cathedral city of Angoulême will ensure interesting outings! Slightly further afield, the beautiful town of Brantôme is well worth the drive; its ancient abbey provides a focal point for the town, and there are boat trips along the river and restaurants serving mouth-watering regional specialities.
