About Gayle

I grew up in a Georgia city, but loved visting my grandparents in their rural home. 17+ years ago I married a West Virginia native, yes a 'hillbilly' who's roots were firmly planted in the mountains of Pocahontas County. We decided to create lodging to share this beautiful playground with other folks. There's always something to do, but it is also a great place to relax and get away from the burdens of the world. This year we have added customized retreats for guests who need a little extra tuning up. Retreat offerings include organic garden veggies, fresh country eggs, yoga, nature walks. Massage services can be arranged.

Gayle purchased this cottage in 2005

Why Gayle chose West Virginia

We built our vacation rentals to share our property with other people.

What makes this cottage unique

Because of it's location, you have easy access to the lodge, constant privacy in open space, clear view of the valley and the mountain. Wildlife wander past so viewing from inside the cottage is a plus. Walking trails are abundant. Access to Monongahela is a step away from the property. The property is located within easy travel to all of the points of interest in Pocahontas County.

BEWARE!! Mice stool and human hair on beds

  • 1 of 5

If i could give it 0 stars i would.. this place was in a good location and at first it was charming, but dont let that fool you. The first things we noticed was all the hair on the pillows, we drove 16 hrs to this location and as tired as we were we had to wash and dry all sheets from the beds because they were dirty and smelly and there was hair on the beds, as if that was not enough when we opened the sofa bed there was mouse stool on the mattress, i even saw a mice on the kitchen. Not to mention the mice stool on the towels in the hallway bathroom. We all know how dangerous and nasty that is. The owner responce to that was "what do you expect the house is in the middle of the forest" what do i expcet?! A clean and safe place to vacation with my children an i believe that is what i paid for. The pans in the kitchen were dirty and greasy and the bbq did not work even though i asked her if it was working prior to my arrival. That being said STAY AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Owner's Response: It is difficult to satisfy a guests' concerns if not made aware of them. In this case, many calls were made to the guest prior to arrival to offer assistance with travel directions. Also a number was given to the guest to call with any concerns and she was invited to call if she needed anything. Additionally, there is a maintenance number posted at the cottage for any issues. This guest did not report any issues during the stay. As always, we would have been happy to address the issues with clean linen and if there was a mouse in the house, we would certainly address that. We are a wilderness area and it takes diligence to keep up with such issues. We rely on our guests to report anything they think needs attention. This guest was very upset when she was told that her damage deposit would be partially refunded. A portion of the deposit was used for the extra cleaning required after they left the cottage trashed following their New Years celebration . Also they violated the "no smoking" house rules. This required extra cleaning of the cottage and a delayed check in for the next guests. Also, clean linen was provided for the number of guests listed in the reservation. If more linen was needed, or if there was a concern about the linen, certainly we would have brought clean linen to them. The question I never got an answer to was why they never called for assistance.

Bigger than I thought!

  • 5 of 5

We went skiing and it really wasn't far from the ski resort at all. It's totally worth the extra 10 minute drive to have complete privacy to enjoy the hot tub and to have a fire. The place has beautiful views! Especially in the morning. I will definitely be coming back!

A perfect week!!!

  • 5 of 5

Thank you Gayle and Sam! Your cabin retreat is in a perfect location, private and met every wish we hoped for! We loved hiking your property and the surrounding areas! Sitting by the firepit and relaxing in the hot tub were added bonuses! Roxy and Beau had a great time too and enjoyed all the streams, wildlife and checking out the cows. We will recommend your place to others and hope to return soon! It was hard to return to Northern Virginia traffic today:-(

Gem for the area.

  • 5 of 5

This place is great for the area, close to the mountain and 1/2 the price with 4 times the room. The only down side is the smell of the well water but it is typical of places with well water. I would stay here again in a heartbeat!

Nice Fall Weekend Getaway

  • 4 of 5

Great place for watching wildlife and for your own animals. We had two dogs that really enjoyed the space. The house does have an electric fence, but it is very easy to turn off while your dogs are outside roaming around. The hot tub is a great addition and the fire pit was a nice way to spend the evening. There is one king size bed, one queen and one full. You can also get an internet connection, which is nice since I didn't have any cell service in the area. The owner also worked with us to allow a late check out. Overall great experience and I would recommend to others.

Motorcycle trip

  • 5 of 5

We enjoyed our stay here and the house was clean and comfortable. The hot tub was great after a day of riding. The house sits up on a hill with great views of the surrounding mountains. We had a fire in the fire pit a few nights and sat there relaxing and star gazing. How peaceful it was! I had specifically asked if the long gravel driveway would pose a problem for our motorcycles and it did not. The house does not have air conditioning, but the ceiling fans kept us cool enough. We had fun trying to communicate with the cows that were in the pasture surrounding the house. Overall, a great experience!
