'Little Wheel' is the guest cottage on the historic Riverdance MIll property (circa 1875) in the charming village of New Preston, CT.
The cottage has been totally reconstructed recently. It is bright and airy in the Spring and Summer, cozy and warm in the Fall and Winter and ALWAYS romantic! The cottage has one bedroom, full bathroom with a walk in shower (a hair dryer is included), a living room with a fireplace, dining area and a fully equipped modern kitchen, You will love your stay here in the sparkle of spring bursting with daffodils and tulips, the lush green of Summer with the cool river at your feet, the glorious burst of Fall and all it's colors and the majesty of the snowy winter and a cozy fire. Sit and relax to the sounds of the water wrapping around the cottage with nice glass of wine or a cup of delicious tea. Play croquette and Horseshoes and Bocce Ball on the lawn. Fish in the river. Bike and hike (8 miles)around Lake Waramaug. Hike the Pinnacle for breathtaking views. Dine in the fine restaurants and travel the surrounding Wine Trail. This location offers wonderful hiking, biking, fishing, bird watching and skiing with fabulous shops and restaurants all in the area. This is an antique hunters paradise. The cottage includes local listings of attractions, events, shows etc. If you have children in Prep School or College in New England this the place for you!

Northwestern Connecticut is one of the most beautiful places in our great country and a very special part of New England.
It is so unique, peaceful and private. The proximity to the village and the local towns is important and convenient.
My husband and I usually stay at an historic inn or a B&B for week-end escapes but this time we decided to try VRBO. I quickly realized most of the search results were for large families or extended families with descriptions of 8-11 bedrooms. For the few that were 1 bedroom rentals, most were lacking in character and had plain white walls and that beige worn out couch condo look. I was about to revert to a B&B site when I came across the listing for Little Wheel cottage. It seemed almost too good to be true but the pictures are indeed accurate. If you are looking for a place that has country charm in a good way, this is it! :) We fell asleep to the sound of the river right outside our bedroom window and in the mornings we enjoyed our coffee on the stone terrace custom built by the little waterfall. One evening before dinner while we were sitting there relaxing, a small raccoon came down from the opposite bank and took a few sips of water.
This is the perfect place to decompress and do nothing. There is a tv in the living room but we enjoyed perusing the coffee table books and just vegging out on the comfy armchair and couch and the bed itself had his/her reading lamps. The kitchen and in fact the whole cottage was impeccably clean and the owner, who could not have been nicer, supplied us with beach towels and chairs for the town beach. While we came at the end of the summer, we could see how this would be a wonderful escape anytime of the year, particularly during fall foliage season because of the beautiful mature trees and the woods surrounding the property.
As for activities, we loved that Lake Waramaug was within walking distance, although it's best to just drive to it if you plan to spend time at the town beach. There is an entry fee but they let you use their kayaks…a highlight of the week-end! We also like to hike and went to Mt. Tom State Park (Washington). This park had a $14 or $15 entry fee but it also had a nice lake and beach for swimming. Another day we hiked Macedonia State Park (Kent) There was no charge to enter but that could have been b/c it was Labor Day and the season was over.
We plan to come back one of these days and would also highly recommend this getaway to friends.
My husband and I run a B&B in the Catskills. We wanted to get away for a few nights to relax, unwind, and decompress. This Cottage was the perfect choice for us; it met all of our desires and needs.
The Cottage itself is absolutely darling and full of charm. It is cozy and very well decorated. We appreciated the reclaimed wood used throughout the Cottage, the high ceilings, and all of the nature-themed decorations/details. There are plenty of windows, allowing an abundance of natural light and shades to block it out if desired. The living room is perfectly cozy and a great place to snuggle up and read a book or watch TV, the kitchen is adorable, the bedroom is perfect with a comfortable bed and lights over the bed for reading at night, and the bathroom has a nice, oversized shower.
The setting is tranquil; in a wooded area with a small river behind the Cottage. We enjoyed drifting off to sleep, and waking to, the gentle sound of the flowing river. Lake Waramaug is just a 30 second drive down the road. There are many wonderful restaurants and shops within 2 to 20 minutes, making it a perfect location.
It was simply perfect! Built and decorated with love and care, in an idyllic setting, private, cozy, peaceful, and in a great area. We intended to stay for 3 nights, but decided to stay a 4th. We will certainly return and highly recommend this to other couples looking for a quiet getaway. This is a very special place, so please be sure to respect and honor it.
I spent a wonderful weekend at this lovely cottage. The cottage is so charming, warm and wonderfully renovated. The sound of the water as soon as you open the front door is such a delight. The pictures accurately reflect the appearance of the cottage - it is beautiful. The property was very clean, very well equipped and the bed was so, so comfortable. It was a true delight to spend the days discovering the local treasures covered with a light layer of snow. Most features are exactly as advertised. I didn't find a hair dryer as advertised (luckily, I brought my own), a music library, I couldn't get the TV in the bedroom to work, and I couldn't connect to the wireless internet ( I think more information was needed). These were all token issues that did not interfere in any way with a wonderful weekend at a lovely cottage.
I stayed with my 3 small boys in this lovely cottage, while visiting family on Lake Waramaug. Location was fantastic, and description was right on. The pictures did not do the landscape justice. Gorgeous. My boys were in heaven, as was I, fishing, exploring and sitting by the river. The property was stocked and the owner could not have been more helpful, bringing us extra futon and linens, even showing my boys how to pick up a snapping turtle...and providing the bucket! We will hope to return next summer.
