The Forest Gate vacation home is a large, 4000 sq ft two-story house surrounded by forest in a park-like setting, on 10 secluded and private acres. This log and cedar home has a rustic elegance, beautifully furnished and comfortable, even to those with discriminating tastes. An outdoor cooking area under the pine trees has three large picnic tables beside a small pond suitable for casual gatherings.
A baby grand piano graces the main living room, perfect for sing-a-longs in the evenings. A large rock fireplace anchors the sitting room in the log cabin portion of the home and inspires curling up with a good book. Although remote, the house is easily accessible from the highway and only 14 miles from the town of Mena, where there are many opportunities for casual dining. Take the scenic Talimena drive accessed from Main St. in Mena or drive one hour east to Pencil Bluff and rent a canoe from a local outfitter. Enjoy ATVs and horseback riding. We are from the Dallas Fort Worth area and bought this house as a vacation home because we loved getting away to the mountains, lakes and rivers available in the "Natural State" of Arkansas. It is only a 4-1/2 to 5 hour drive and great for a three day weekend.
We bought this property for it's easy access into the National Forest for ATVing and riding our horses right off the property. Our family and friends have spent many great times and made some wonderful memories here over the years.
Thanks so much for being so good to work with. We certainly appreciate all your efforts. Your home in Arkansas is so wonderful – I hope you guys get a chance to spend some time enjoying it too.
We had an absolute blast. The home is beautiful !!! We loved the way the house was set up so that everybody could be together or you were able to have me time if you needed too. The 2 kitchens made it easy to cook for everyone, especially for our oldest brother that is a awesome chef.
The downstairs queen suite off of the kitchen was awesome for our 90 year old Mother. She had a wonderful time and she had no problems getting around because everything is very open.
We had family from Dallas, Austin, Longview and even California and Long Island New York. The family was able to play cards, play horseshoes and roast marshmallows for s'mores. The weather was beautiful for the most part. Nearing the end we had a few nasty days but it didn't matter because it was such a pleasure being at the house. The home gives you a feel of HOME. The furnishings are beautiful and extremely comfortable. The outside surroundings are gorgeous. The area set up outside with picnic tables has a beautiful walkway from the house so you can play horseshoes and visit. I could go on and on because I have so many wonderful things to say. Miss Kathleen and her caretakers think of everything for your stay down to paper towels, toilet tissue, etc, etc.
We went many times into Mena which is a neat little town. We love their Walmart. We also all went to the top of the mountain and had a late lunch one day at Queen Wilhelmina Lodge. Beautiful Place !!
We want to Thank You Miss Kathleen, Mr. Ray and his wife (the caretakers of Forest Gate) for making our stay so memorable. I would absolutely stay again !
Enjoyed thanksgiving with my extended family (6 adults and 4 kids) at this WONDERFUL house. There was a lot of rain for our stay, which kept us indoors for most of the time, but the house was so spacious that we never felt cramped or "on top of each other." We made good use of the two kitchens for preparing the big Thanksgiving feast. The beds were extremely comfortable (and I'm picky). Just a few days before my arrival I inquired if the TV would accept an HDMI connection so I could watch some holiday blu-rays, and the owner had a new flat-screen installed! I couldn't believe how accommodating she was! Mena is a neat little town ~20 minutes away and before the rain started, we did sneak in a beautiful hike at Queen Wilhelmena State Park. I could go on and on about how great the property is, but suffice to say I would highly recommend it!
Ten of us (6 adults and 4 children 5-14) gathered at The Forest Gate for Thanksgiving 2015. The house was big enough with many separate spaces we could all be comfortable. Good thing because it rained every day we were there. The kids claimed the upstairs living space and the adults spread out in the cabin area and living room--reading watching tv or napping. It was a very relaxed vacation. The two kitchens are well equipped with everything you need and more. The bedrooms, each with its own bath were great. The loft with the twin beds was a great place for our only girl. We've stayed in many VRBOs but this is one of the best. It's in a pretty remote location. As one of the locals told us about all that goes on is "hunting, fishing and antiquin'" When the rain let up a little we did find our way into Mena and the antique stores. We would consider returning
We really enjoyed staying at this place - had really wonderful time. Will highly recommend it for any one who would love to have a cozy, wonderful vacation spot. My kids loved the Jacuzzi tub in the master.
- Clean, Spacious Property
- All bed rooms are big size, with clean linens, towels
- I have never seen a rental kitchen with so many good utensils, cutlery and basic cooking items
My wife and teenage kids, along with my parents, and four grad students spent Thanksgiving 2013 at Forest Gate. I've stayed at a number of vacation rental properties in Arkansas and Colorado for a "get away in the woods", and this was one of my favorites. When we first arrived and walked through the house for a quick tour, we were amazed by all the space and the nice furnishings. Having a separate bathroom for each bedroom was great, and balconies off of the upstairs really were a plus for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. In contrast to many houses where we have stayed, the kitchen(s) were extremely well-stocked with cooking utensils, etc. We loved the large lot, the close proximity to the woods, and the outdoor recreation area with horseshoes, firepit, picnic tables, pond, etc.
The things that I enjoyed the most were the great Yamaha baby grand piano, the huge stone fireplace in the living room, and the large master bedroom/bath. I love to get away from everything, and the combination of nice furnishings, remote location, large lot, and generous floor plan really make this place unusual.
The housekeepers were also very helpful with suggestions for ATV rentals and for mailing us some items that we accidently left behind.
About the only "non-standard" feature worth mentioning is the kitchen situation. There are two kitchens: a smaller one downstairs next to the living area, and a larger one upstairs with the upstairs bedrooms. Having two separate kitchens (instead of a single large one) could be good if you have multiple families or age groups that might naturally cook/eat separately (for example, it worked well for us -- my students tended to use the downstairs kitchen, while my family used the upstairs). It could also be nice to have two ovens, two refrigerators, etc. However, if you have a group that really wants to cook together and all hang out in the kitchen to socialize, you may find that this property does not support that well. In any case, the nice thing is that the downstairs dining area is large enough to accommodate 12-14 people easily, so even if you are cooking separately, you can eat together.
We also had a great time on the Wolf Pen Gap ATV trails with vehicles from Black Bear ATV rentals.
In summary, I highly recommend Forest Gate if you are looking for a remote location with great furnishings and connection to the outdoors. We would love to return again some time.
This was my third stay at Forest Gate. It is a fantastic place. Plenty of room for all my family. We come on our motorcycles & love riding the roads in the area. The house is always clean & ready for our arrival. We love staying here. I plan on making more trips in the future & would highly recommend staying here.
Drive the Talimena Scenic Byway and view the autumn foliage. Enjoy a day trip canoeing in Pencil Bluff (1 hr) , or touring the shops and hot baths in Hot Springs (2 hrs). A day trip to Crater of the Diamonds is also suggested (1-1/2 hrs).
