About Mark & Sandra Taylor
Mark & Sandra Taylor have been married 25 years & lived for the majority of that time in Sussex in the south of England. They met at Gatwick Airport where they both worked. Mark was a police officer & Sandra worked for a Handling Agent. Mark recently retired after 30 years police service in Sussex & the Metropolitan Police, his last posting was as the Duty Officer in charge of the Royal Palace of Windsor Castle. After leaving the airport Sandra worked in the travel business for various major Tour Operators, her last role as contracting executive covering the Caribbean. It was their dream to manage & own a holiday business, utilising all their skills to provide an exceptional holiday experience for their guests. Vacheroy Gite now gives them that opportunity.
Mark & Sandra Taylor purchased this Cottage in 2014
Why Mark & Sandra Taylor chose Sousmoulins
We fell in love with the house at first sight. We were looking in Charente Maritime as it has a superb climate & great road, rail & air links. On our doorstep are the vineyards of Bordeaux, the cites of Angouleme & Bordeaux & the richness of French rural life. The garden is quiet with lots of space & the Gite ticked all the boxes. We have holidayed all over France & Marks parents had a holiday home in Gascony (nr Toulouse) for 15 years so we know France well. This area really has it all & the house is ideally positioned in a rural location but minutes from all amenities of a vibrant country town.
What makes this Cottage unique
When we bought the property there was no swimming pool but we were able to build the one we wanted rather than take over someone else's. We now have a superb 10x5 metre, in ground, heated pool with a huge 90 square metre sun deck. The pool has been positioned so it catches the sun all day long. Our WiFi covers the house, sun areas & pool so if you love being connected you will not lose that whilst here. Of course, you can just switch off & relax. The garden is large enough to play in, we have table tennis, boules, badminton & croquet! You can relax here or venture out & take in all the fantastic sights, sounds & activities. Fortresses, vineyards, medieval cities & villages, markets, festivals, beaches, lakes, a motor racing circuit, an ostrich farm, superb restaurants........ Did we mention the vineyards?

Stunning property with everything you need
On arrival at 8pm with two children (aged 4 and 6) and a crazy dog we were given a warm welcome by Sandra and Mark who had the pool open and warm to jump straight in which was a lovely start to the holiday along with a great welcome pack.
The house is immaculate and has everything you could need.
The bedrooms were great - comfortable with white, crisp, clean linen and the girls loved The Den especially the glow up stars on the ceiling above their beds.
The bathrooms were spotless, modern with good quality towels. There was wifi throughout the whole property and it even reached the pool.
The garden is stunning with beautiful places to sit and rest. The garden immediately outside our kitchen was fenced off and meant we could leave the back door open at all times knowing the girls could not get into the rest of the garden where the pool was without us.
The pool was warm and huge and positioned perfectly for all day sun.
There is plenty to do in the area - we went to Cognac, an airshow, Royan beach, Blaye, night markets and indoor swimming at Jonzac all easily accessible but the thing we loved doing the most was enjoying the pool and garden.
One of our concerns before we arrived was how it would be having the owners living on site. We didn't need to worry as Sandra and Mark were warm and welcoming but then faded away into the background only appearing when needed and their generosity in keeping an eye on the dog when we went out was amazing.
Because it is also their home everything is to a high standard and small things like making sure the pool is kept at a constant (high) temperature are kept an eye on.
I would definitely recommend this house to anyone with children of any age or adults only. For young children the enclosed garden with swings, slide and amazing wildlife (not least the large family of swifts) will keep them amused for hours. For older children the pool table, table tennis etc should keep them amused if they ever get fed up of the pool.
For those without children this house offers a complete escape with true peace and quiet. There are areas to sit and read a book or just close your eyes and not hear a thing for hours. The house is big enough to accommodate a larger group with a large outside table comfortable to sit at with a few bottles of wine until the early hours.
Thank you so much for this wonderfull review. We loved hosting you all here and we are so glad you loved the place as much as we do. It is very rewarding to have such great guests making lifelong memories with us. We sincerely hope you will visit us again.

Wonderful five star gite
Excellent property very spacious everything you could possibly need for a fantastic holiday. The pool was very clean and well maintained. The owners were very welcoming and couldn't have been more helpful and had great local knowledge. Would definitely return and recommend.
Thank you Mike, it was a pleasure to host you & would be great to see you & your family back here in the future. Regards, Mark & Sandra
Great location in the countryside, surrounded by many sunflower fields, it was picturesque! The Gite had everything we needed and was very comfortable and homely. The girls particularly loved the Den!
The garden had plenty of space to run around. Swings and hammocks for us to enjoy, and of course the beautiful pool. It was all one depth which meant the grown ups could swim comfortably, and the kids could play safely on the floats etc. There were also other games/puzzles/books provided inside the house, as well as outside games like table tennis etc.
There was also an Ostrich farm nearby. The owner was very proud to show off her Ostriches and to tell you everything you needed to know about them.
Also, another restaurant called GIGI'S was close by, we went on a Saturday evening and enjoyed a lovely meal, and it had a great atmosphere.
Mark and Sandra couldn't have made us feel any more welcome, they really made our holiday. Our girls were really taken with their dogs, Ruby and Daisy, who were so gently and friendly.
All in all, it was a great Gite, and not too far away from the beaches and places of interest. Mark and Sandra were great hosts, and we all had a very relaxing holiday!
Thank you from the Meekums family.
Thank you for a lovely review. It was a pleasure to have you & your family here & we look forward to seeing you all back here soon. Take care, Mark & Sandra
Vacheroy is in the Cognac appellation in rural France, local produce abounds. Enjoy the local markets in Montendre or Jonzac, vineyards, country walks, lakes & restaurants right on our doorstep or venture a little further afield for historic cities, beaches, medieval villages, the great Bordeaux vineyards of St Emillion or the Chateaux of the Medoc. On the borders of Aquitaine & Charente Maritime, the area offers thousands of years of history for you to enjoy. Roman remains, walled villages of the Hundred Years War & religious wars & the centre of the wine trade between France & Britain, the wonderful UNESCO World Heritage 18th century city of Bordeaux itself. Charente Maritime reputedly has the second sunniest climate in the whole of France. The countryside here is beautiful with rolling hillsides covered in vines, extensive walking, horse riding & cycling trails, forests, historic towns & villages and bountiful local produce.
Our local town is Montendre, a settlement has been here since before Roman times. It has a small ruined chateau on the hill in the centre of town. A walk up to the Chateaux tower & ramparts is rewarded with beautiful views over the town & surrounding countryside. Montendre is serviced by all the usual small shops so loved here in France. On top of that there are two medium sized supermarkets to ensure you have all you need. If you prefer fresh local produce, the town holds a lovely market every Thursday & Sunday mornings. In July & August there is also an evening Marché Gourmande every Tuesday evening. The centre of town is filled with food stalls and seating for hundreds. Here you can buy almost everything, hog roast, fish & chips, duck, snails, moule frites, salads, Chinese & Italian food. There is a fabulous family atmosphere & a couple of bars & stalls sell local wines at amazingly low prices. (Typically around four euros)
Montendre also has a large boating lake surrounded by forest trail. Plenty of interesting outdoor pursuits including an outdoor gym, sailing, fishing & a large outdoor swimming pool with wave machine. Montendre also has a lovely nine hole golf course & there are riding stables on the outskirts. Montendre Lac is also the home to an annual music festival showcasing French & international bands including in recent years The Kaiser Chiefs & Franz Ferdinand.
Between Montendre & the Gironde estuary the land flattens out and is covered in forest & agricultural land. This area crosses into the Bordeaux wine appellations of Côte de Bourg & Côte de Blaye, both excellent wines. There are many vineyards open for wine tastings & tours. We are not far from Cognac & much of the grape harvest in our area is taken to make that little tipple. As well as wine & Cognac, the area specialises in a drink called Pineau de Charente, a beautiful fortified wine which is usually drunk chilled as an aperitif.
Montendre & it's surrounds host a wide range of restaurants, everything from pizzas & crepes to fine dining & French country cooking. You'll certainly not go home hungry if you choose to eat out here. Our favourite is La Quincaillerie, a Michelin recommended restaurant in the heart of Montendre who are more than happy to cater for vegatarian diners (still quite rare in rural France). For a more relaxed atmosphere the bar/restaurant Chez GiGi is a 20 minute walk or 5 minute drive from the Gite. The menu is small but the food is great & there is live music most weekends through the summer months. See the gallery for pictures.
and that was just Montendre.........
Cognac - a short drive away the town of Cognac hosts many of the famous cognac distilleries, most of which are open for excellent tours & tastings. The old quarter dates back to medieval times, the Charente river flows through the town & there are many bars & restaurants with a great range of food served on sunny terraces.
Blaye - travel through the vineyards to the banks of the Gironde. Blaye is famed for its wine and the historic fortress Blaye Citadelle, part of the fortifications that protected the important trading centre of Bordeaux further downstream. The Citadelle is worth a day out on its own. The large Fortress was built in the 17th Century, protection from the marauding English! Now the Citadelle hosts a hotel, restaurants and boutiques selling arts & crafts. From Blaye you can also take the short ferry trip to the Médoc, another beautiful area filled with the vineyards & stunning Chateaux of this famed wine area.
Jonzac - Jonzac is the administrative centre of the area & has a pretty centre with a lovely Chateau, restaurants, bars & shops. Jonzac is famed for its thermal spa & people come from all over France to take the waters. As well as the medicinal spa, Jonzac has a large swimming & spa complex called Antilles de Jonzac with indoor & outdoor swimming, jacuzzi & steam rooms, fun for all the family, it is also open year round. Jonzac lac is a large lake with beach area & an outdoor restaurant.
