This chalet-style cottage is nestled amid large hemlocks and oaks, facing the western shores of Great Moose Lake. Located in a quiet neighborhood of summer cottages, the peace and quiet is restful and relaxing. The call of the loons is often the loudest sound that can be heard on a lazy summer evening.
The cottage has hardwood floors and pine ceilings. The open concept kitchen/living room has a soaring cathedral ceiling with ceiling fans and the kitchen has a large island that is perfect for inside dining. The kitchen is fully applianced and equipped for preparing meals.
A wood stove takes the edge off chilly evenings but is rarely needed in the summer. The cottage is heated by a monitor heater in the basement, and individual rooms are heated with electric baseboard. There are two bedrooms on the main floor, one with a California king-size memory foam mattress and the other with a queen-size bed. A third bedroom in the finished basement has two twin size beds, An upstairs loft provides additional sleeping space with a daybed and futon. The living room also has a futon that may provide sleeping space. Both the living room and the family room have TV's and DVD players for your entertainment.
A large upper deck provides for outdoor grilling and dining. This entertainment space provides seating around the umbrella table for six. The new lower deck provides shaded seating for siestas on those hot summer afternoons when you have enjoyed enough sun for the day. The lower deck leads to granite steps down to a large patio area. This patio area is surrounded by granite boulders and has a large granite fire pit to roast marshmallows or to just sit by a crackling fire in the evenings.
A set of stairs from the patio area lead down to another deck down by the water. This lower deck enjoys both sunshine and shade, depending on the time of day. There is a large picnic table to either enjoy a meal/snack or play some cribbage while the kids enjoy the water. The lake frontage is crystal clear with a gravel bottom. It's so clear that you can see the bottom up at the cottage. You can gradually wade in from the shore or use the dock to jump in. There are water flotation chairs and lounges so that you can relax in the cool water on a hot summer day and watch the loons swim by. If you prefer being on the water, we have an Old Town canoe with paddles or an Ocean Kayak for your personal boating pleasure. There is a hammock right at the water's edge that is shaded by massive hemlocks and provides a great napping space.
Summer lake activities include swimming, sunning, canoeing, kayaking, boating and fishing. In the winter, lake activities include ice fishing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. Wildlife abounds in the area with bald eagle sightings common and occasional moose visits. The fall foliage with the lake as a background is breathtaking. The winter here is equally beautiful and the cottage is snug and cozy for winter vacations.
Pets are allowed but must be well-behaved (not constantly barking) and not allowed to wander off the premises. Pet waste needs to bagged up and disposed of properly. Pets need prior approval so please discuss situation with owners beforehand.
There are ATV trails in the area. There is an eighteen-hole golf course and a nine-hole golf course within a 10 mile radius of the cottage. There is a village approximately two miles from the cottage that has a grocery store, a gas station, a diner and an ATM. A nearby town has a super Wal-Mart, Pizza Hut, Dunkin Donuts, and various restaurants.
We have spent our summers here since the cottage was built. It has been an ideal place for our children to grow up and give us a place to slow down the hectic pace of life.
Owner/Property Manager purchased this cottage in 2000
We grew up in central Maine and have always found it to be a nice area to live in. The crystal clear lake with gravel bottom is beautiful in any season. It is close to town but seems like it is miles away. Most Maine attractions are within an hour or two drive away.
Great Moose Lake is a beautiful lake that is calm and quiet. Boat traffic is minimal, so it is great place to relax in the hammock or sit by the water during the day and sit on the patio by the firepit at night and count the stars.
We had the pleasure of staying at this lovely cottage in early August. This is the fourth time we have rented through VRBO and this was by far the best rental yet! The owner was easy to work with and responded quickly to any questions. The home was very comfortable, well furnished and well supplied with kitchen items, fun Fiestaware dishes and plenty of sheets and towels. As stated in previous reviews, the pictures do not do the cottage justice! The lake was beautiful and clean, perfect for swimming or boating. The owners provided a canoe and two kayaks, which we took advantage of daily. The dock was great, with stairs for entering the water, which helped avoid the rocky shoreline. There are a fair amount of stairs from the home to the lake, providing multiple patios/decks, with outdoor chairs, which allowed moving from sun to shade accordingly during the day. The night sky was amazing for star gazing and we saw spectacular meteor showers a few nights. There are neighbors on either side, but we rarely saw or heard anyone during our stay. The property as many trees and provided a nice amount of privacy. This is the ideal spot for relaxing and enjoying the outdoors. Our 15 and 16 year old and medium sized dog all have a great time and we all agree that this vacation home deserves a return trip!
We stayed here with 4 adults, a 7 year old child and a dog. We were pleasantly surprised when we arrived because the photos do not do the house justice. The entry level has 2 bedrooms (one with a king bed and one with a queen bed) and a bathroom. The bedrooms were very pretty, clean and comfortable with ceiling fans and air conditioners. The basement level (one level down) has a bigger bathroom and a room with 2 twin beds. There is also a loft area above the living room which had a small sleeping area which was perfect for our 7 year old. The house was clean and well maintained with a nice supply of dishes, towels, etc. We spent alot of time at the waterfront area which was small but worked well for our group. The dock was twice as wide as shown in the photos and more sturdy than I was expecting. The hammock was a terrific place to read and watch the water. The lake itself has boat traffic but it was very quiet and minimal while we were there and we had a great time exploring with the 2 kayaks and canoe that were on the property. It is a great place to fish and swim - there's a rocky entry and bottom for the swimming area but it was fine with swim shoes. One warning that there are alot of stairs to get down to the waterfront so it would be difficult for someone with disabilities and would be alot of work with very young children. But it worked perfectly for a 7 year old and a medium sized dog and gave us extra exercise. The owner was very responsive via email before we arrived and was quick to answer any questions that we had. I would definitely recommend this rental as a beautiful stay for someone looking to relax and enjoy the water!
This past June was our second stay at this beautiful lakefront cottage nestled above the shores of peaceful Great Moose Lake. We have vacationed on the lake for several summers and this is without a doubt the nicest cottage we have ever stayed in. While the pictures online do capture some of it's charm, it is even prettier in-person. It is clean, wonderfully appointed and offers all the conveniences of home while being away. The owners are excellent to work with and also provide two kayaks and a canoe, which our teenagers thoroughly enjoyed. In addition, they also provided assistance in helping us find a local company to rent a small motorboat for the week so we could fish and further explore this expansive lake. It's difficult to put into words how peaceful and relaxing it is by the lake but for us it provides the perfect time to decompress from work and all of life's demands. There were days out on the water where we literally felt we had the entire lake all to ourselves, only occasionally seeing a fellow boater off in the distance likely sharing the same feelings.
One of our favorite things to do each night was to gather on the dock as the sunset and watch the spectacular light show nature provides from the shore of this home. Vivid yellows, orange, reds and purples light up the sky and reflect off the clean sparkling water. Ironically, the largest fish I caught all week after renting a boat was from the dock right before dusk.
One consideration that you should be aware of; the house is elevated on a hillside, so there are several stairs to get back and forth from the dock. However, we didn't mind at all and thought of it as little bit of "forced exercise" during an otherwise restful week.
If your looking to stay at a beautiful, comfortable, waterfront cottage for some well deserved rest and relaxation...you can't go wrong with this choice.

We had a great time at the Cottage and thank the owners for sharing such a lovely spot on the lake. The cottage was exactly as described and the owners were very helpful and responsive in answering all of our questions. We were visting family in the area for the week to celebrate my parents 50th Wedding Anniversary. This is the first place we've rented near my family that my husband said he would go back to!
The cottage has 3 comfortable bedrooms with a bathroom on 2 levels. From the living room, there are large windows looking out over the lake. It was fairly rainy while we there but my favorite thing was to sit on the couch and look out at the lake while the rain was coming down. There's a wood stove in the living room that would make it a cozy place to spend time in the cooler weather. We didn't use it as the weather was fairly warm while we were there. The kitchen was stocked with plenty of dishes, glasses, cups, and silverware. There were plenty of pots and pans. The owners even supplied us with a crock pot (which we requested). Most of the basic spices, etc. were there and a note invited us to us what was available. With a dishwasher, internet access, and laundry provided, I don't think we could ask for anything more!
The Cottage is a couple of miles outside of the nearest town which has a small convenience store and a small grocery store so if you've forgotten anything, it's not too far to go to get the missing item. There are a large number of steps both from the driveway to the cottage and from the cottage to the water's edge but as long as you are able to navigate them, it's well worth it for this place. We highly recommend this property for anyone who wants to stay at a nice place but still have the enjoyment of the quiet and peacefulness of lake side stay in the heart of Maine.
