HI! I AM LUCY AND MY HUSBAND, MIKE, AND I OPERATE OUR VACATION RENTAL APARTMENT ON SAPELO. IN OUR OTHER LIVES MIKE IS A CONTRACTOR AND I AM A REALTOR WITH COASTAL PROPERTIES OF GEORGIA (912 437-2444. WE'VE BEEN LIVING ON SAPELO FOR 16-22 YEARS DEPENDING ON WHICH OF US YOU ARE TALKING TO. WE LOVE IT. SAPELO CAN PROVIDE TOTAL AND COMPLETE DOWNTIME-SOMETHING HARD TO GET IN TODAY'S WORLD. YOU FORGET HOW MANY STARS THERE ARE. NO TRAFFIC. NO LIGHT POLUTION. NO TEMPTATIONS TO STALK THE MALLS. WALK OUR BEACHES AND LET THE SUN, WIND, AND WATER WASH AWAY YOU CARES, FATIGUE AND FRUSTRATION.
This was my second stay at the "treetop" apartment belonging to Lucy Lea and Mike Sellers on Sapelo Island. It is a wonderful retreat. Your deck is up in the trees, and you are at home with the many species of birds that come to Lucy's feeders. The apartment is very clean, well-stocked small kitchen, nice bath, comfortable bedroom as well as bunk beds and couch. I truly love being there. We were able to experience the various beaches at sunrise and sunset...drive around in the old Jeep we were able to use..and learn about the island and its inhabitants...former and present. Lucy is wonderful to deal with and to give tips and advice about the island. It is truly a home away from home in a wonderful place.
This was our 2nd time staying at Lucy's beautiful retreat on Sapelo Island and it was perfect, as before! The attention to detail in meeting guests' needs is at the top of the list for Lucy. Sapelo is the perfect location for a quiet getaway too! Its simply magical!
A friend and I stayed here for a week in July 2016. The hosts Mike and Lucy are very nice, and very accomdating. The apartment was nicely furnished and clean, and in a great location. And a HUGE bonus was getting to use their spare car - I understand that even renting a golf cart on the island can cost you something like $50 a night (yes, for a golf cart!). So, getting free use of their car to tool around the island on was very much well worth staying here for. Plus, Lucy will give you a tour of the off-limits northern end of the island for a small fee. It was very informative, and great to see lesser-seen parts of the island.
The only thing keeping me from giving it 5 stars are that I really thought we were renting a whole house. I tried to go back and see if I just read the description wrong, or if it was worded poorly, but I can't seem to find the property description again. What you are getting is a small apartment on top of Mike & Lucy's house - it's 3rd floor with one bedroom, one bathroom, and one long common area that includes the living room area, a set of bunk beds, and the kitchen. MUCH smaller than we expected. Plus, the third floor gets pretty hot in July by late afternoon, and the A/C just wasn't up to the task. Lucy was kind enough to supply us with a fan, though.
All in all a good experience!
Two friends and I needed to get away from the city to concentrate on writing and music composition projects. The retreat was perfect for our needs. The musicians had never seen a wild beach before and had a hoot driving the Jeep on dirt roads. The island itself offers a complete relief from urban life. Miss Lucy is a gracious and good-natured host. I can't recommend this place highly enough. We all wished we could stay longer and will probably make it an annual trip.
The pricing was good. The apartment was better than I expected and well appointed. The available rope & pulley to the 3rd floor was a back saver.
I would encourage guest to come well stocked in food, drinks, and any snacks. The "store" on Sapelo is limited.
The ferry is on time, so come early as you will not be the only passengers. Check the ferry schedule as it changes some days. The next time we come I'll mail most of our dry goods ahead of time to save on packing.
Ms. Lucy and Mr. Mike were very nice and full of great advice about our stay. Ask them anything.
Go to the north beach. We saw one person the whole time. Shelling was awesome, sand dollars, whelk shells, and more.
We shall return!
Perfect, absolutely perfect. We had dreamed of going to Sapelo for years. Could not have asked for a better trip. Already planning our next trip to the Island and to Lucy and Mikes place. They were so nice and gracious and the digs were exactly what was advertised.
My Sapelo Retreat is on Sapelo Island which is 4 1/2 mi. from the mainland. On the Island there is only 1 small convenience store and a post office. Several of the things I have commented on are in the historic fishing village of Darien, a frequent overnight before the trip over to Sapelo. For instance, there is a great little salon and spa, Eternity Salon and Spa, in Darien. The restaurants I've commented on are in Darien and there is a fine gourmet wine and cheese store and wine bar there, Waterfront Wine and Gourmet on the waterfront on Broad Street. Some types of activities require hiring a guide, deep sea fishing, kayaking, scuba diving but I can connect you with the folks who do those things. Just ask! I'll be glad to answer your questions.
