Views of the countryside and plenty of outdoor activities for all ages

Finca Flores Amarillas is a four-star registered B&B located right in the heart of the delightful province of Extremadura in south-west Spain. The house, with a private swimming pool and five en-suite bedrooms, can be found nestled amongst the ancient olive and fig groves typical of this area. We are perfectly placed to offer our guests a marvellous opportunity to explore this diverse and often forgotten part of Spain.

The house sits in about five acres of land and is surrounded with fig and olive trees, with beautiful views of soft-rolling hills and pasture land. Guests will have the perfect opportunity to combine walking and birdwatching excursions with exploring the old medieval towns and villages and sampling the local cuisine.

The building is a typically white Mediterranean house, with shaded balconies, terraces and porches, plenty of flowers and pleasant aromatic plants, and local architectural elements.

Its design is an interesting combination of passive-solar architecture and alternative energy sources. We have our own well to provide us with clean, fresh water and our geothermal installation provides underfloor heating in the winter and cooling in the summer. We also enjoy the luxury of being connected to the national grid, so our electricity supply is not dependant on sunny days.

There are five double en-suite bedrooms, two communal areas and three terraces on the top floor, all offering spectacular views of the surrounding countryside. Breakfast is included and can be taken in the upstairs breakfast room or on one of the outside terraces, weather permitting.

The downstairs has a big, open-plan living room cum dining area that opens onto a spacious porch where meals can be served. We also have a lovely outside kitchen with a large barbecue area available to all our guests.

For guests choosing to book the entire property, there is also a spacious kitchen available.

There are several outdoor areas to relax and have a drink or a siesta, as well as outdoor games, such as table tennis and bowling, to keep our guests entertained when they are not walking in the sierra, birdwatching or sightseeing in the local towns.

Travellers visiting in the colder months can experience a true winter atmosphere. There is an open fireplace in the living room, a wood burner in the kitchen and another one in the upstairs breakfast room.

From August 2017 guests are able to use the new swimming pool which is located a few metres from the house.

About Paul

I am a British expat living in Spain since 2000. My wife Iva and I manage a B&B place in the province of Extremadura, southwest Spain. We have three children aged 8, 6 and 2, a dog and two cats, with plans to have chicken and a couple of donkeys in the near future.

Since moving here from Madrid in 2008 (where Iva and I met), we have abandoned the rat race but also all the good stuff a city has to offer (we do miss some of the things), and basically tried to make our lives simpler and more in sync with nature. We buy locally grown organic produce (fruit and vegetables, meat and free-range chicken and eggs), and we harvest our own olives and figs. We spend most of our free time outdoors. Or cooking.

We enjoy living in the countryside and being a part of a small, closely-knit community. Our nearest village only has 2000 inhabitants and it's a great feeling running into people you know when you are out and about (something that never happened in Madrid).

With three 'free-range' children, most of the nights we can't wait to go to bed, but on those rare nights when we feel we've still got some energy left, we like to sit on the porch, watch the sunset and talk, or stay inside and watch a film or an episode or two of our favourite series of the moment, or simply read a book. And we always enjoy having guests (paying and non-paying) and sharing our rural experience with them.

Now, I know it all sounds very idyllic, and in many ways it is, but with three small children it can get a bit stressful too. Having said that, we have never regretted our decision to abandon a cosmopolitan and multi-cultural Madrid and start a new life on a finca (Spanish for a piece of land, usually cultivated and sometimes with a house on it), and we are sure most people who come here come for the same reason - to briefly get away from it all and enjoy the peace and quiet of the countryside.

Why Paul chose Almoharín

Seeing this finca back in 2007 was love at first sight, and although we continued looking, we always came back to it. We decided to buy it while on our honeymoon and have worked on our project ever since. It's been a long journey designing the house, getting all the licences, having it built and furnished, but we have finally made it and never looked back.

What makes this chateau / country house unique

Finca Flores Amarillas is a newly-built country home in the heart of Extremadura, Spain. The house and the adjacent 5-acre land lie on the sunny side of the Sierra de Montanchez and boast spectacular views all around.

The house has 5 double rooms with en-suite bathrooms, two sitting rooms and three terraces (two are shaded) on the upper floor, with the living-cum-dining room, the kitchen and shaded outdoor spaces all downstairs.

The house is on the grid for electricity, water supply is our own (borehole) and there is a geothermal installation with underfloor heating/cooling, making it possible to enjoy your stay any time of the year.

There are several play areas scattered around the finca, with plenty of sports equipment to keep everyone busy (table tennis, badminton, petanque, sand pit, trampoline...). The fig and olive trees provide shade and cold refreshments are a welcome companion on a hot summer's day.

As a registered B&B with five double en-suite bedrooms, our B&B guests will have access to all of the upstairs, but are always welcome to join us downstairs.

We also offer the possibility of full house rental. When renting a whole house, guests have access to all of the upstairs (5 bedrooms, 2 sitting rooms and 3 terraces) and the downstairs (1 bedroom, a spacious living room and dining room, a kitchen, and all of the outdoor spaces (porch, etc.). Excellent base for exploring Extremadura

We stayed 5 nights and were overwhelmed by the high service level and hospitality from the owners Iva and Paul.

The place is very well suited as a base for birders.

Easy access from highway A5. Very high flexibility in terms of meal times , beautiful views over the surrounding mountains, and located next to an 18 km hiking trail.

Good free WiFi connections, and delicious 3 course dinners at a cost of 20 Euros including choice of alcoholic beverages, to be offered the night before.

Highly recommendable.

Finca Flores Amarillas is a spacious mediterranean-style house. The property can be rented as a whole (max 14 guests), or on a B&B basis (5 double rooms, all with en suite bathrooms).

We are located in the heart of Extremadura, southwest Spain. This location makes us a perfect jumping off point to explore Extremadura and beyond.

Throughout the year there are many cultural and gastronomical events taking place in the area, not to mention local fiestas where traditions and modern age go hand in hand.
