About marcia doolin

My husband and I and our three daughters have spent many special times at this cottage. We have always been skiers and our girls have developed into serious ski racers. We now spend every weekend here during the ski season and ski at Boyne Mountain when we are not traveling to nearby ski resorts for scheduled races.

marcia doolin purchased this cottage in 1999

Why marcia doolin chose Northern Michigan

We have always loved the close knit community and laid back character of Boyne City. The people are real and the town takes you back to a simpler time when family spent meals and evenings together enjoying one anothers company. We first owned a smaller cottage directly across the street and purchased this one when our family got too big for the one bathroom and two burner stove. We have loved having the two living spaces for friends and family. Everyone is comfortable because they have their own space and conveniences.

What makes this cottage unique

We have spent nearly every New Year's Eve at this cottage creating memories that will last forever. We live on Lake Erie in Ontario in the summer and are not able to enjoy Boyne City in the summer at it's best. That's why we are happy to share this special home with others who will hopefully fall in love with Boyne City like we have and want to return year after year to continue cherished family ties at a slower pace.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Hi Marcia,

Everyone had a wonderful time and there was plenty of snow for skiing. The teenage boys spent two full days at Avalanche Bay and had a great time. My two year old granddaughter took her first ski lessons and even went up the chair lift. The accommodations were excellent with plenty of parking for all three vehicles. Thanks for everything.

Fabulous Get Away for Family Reunion

  • 5 of 5

Our family was looking for a place where we would want to spend Christmas, close to skiing. We were attracted to the size and décor of the house from the pictures, and 2 kitchens were particularly appealing! The actual house was even better than we had anticipated!! And the owner had decorated it for Christmas with a tree and white lights strung along the 3rd floor banister and outside balcony. It was very festive and welcoming! For sleeping, we had 3 couples who were all very comfortable in the 3 bedrooms. Our 7th member chose to sleep on the window seat bed and created her own "space" in the lower living area. Both kitchens were used extensively and were very well equipped (1st floor for meals, 2nd floor for adult beverages!). We enjoyed playing ping pong in the basement and used the 2nd floor living area (where the Christmas tree was set up) for games and opening gifts, in addition to watching football on TV! The 1st floor living area was perfect for people to hang out in, watching TV while meals were being prepared, and for late night movies when others had gone to bed. We had people driving from Michigan, SC and Washington, DC, and found the parking was perfect for 3 cars. We had one issue with a missing garbage can, but the house manager was very accessible and responsive, even though she was away on her own Christmas holiday! In planning our trip, the owner was great - responding quickly, answering questions and providing suggestions for restaurants and things to do. Our only disappointment was the lack of snow, so we did very little skiing, but still managed to get to a couple of the ski areas during our stay. We would definitely recommend this house for winter vacations. It is walking distance to the lake and downtown, so I'm sure it is a wonderful vacation home the rest of the year as well.

Owner's Response: We are so happy Carol, that you and your family loved the cottage as much as we do. This was the first time in 15 years that our family did not spend the week between Christmas and New Years there so I shed a few sentimental tears when I was putting up the little tree and hanging the lights. It warms my heart that your wonderful family enjoyed them instead. Thank you for your comments and all the best in the New Year!

We were blown away by the beauty and comfort of this house! Immaculate and cozy - it was so easy for everyone to have their own space (4 floors! 2 living areas! 2 kitchens!), yet convene for family fun! Ping-Pong and a variety of board games provided wind-down time for the kids. The owner gave us a host of solid recommendations for dining and activities, so we were able to fit so much into our short four nights. We took advantage of the spa, waterpark, skiing, snowshoeing and a sleigh ride at the Mountain. I walked two short blocks from the house for morning Yoga and Spinning classes at Balanced Living. Also within walking distance, were all of the amazing restaurants and downtown shops. Highly recommend!

Beautiful home with comfortable feel

  • 5 of 5

We spent our annual two week long "up north" vacation in this home- what a beautiful home!!! It is very spacious- our party of four adults and two kids were easily accommodated! The most important part to me is that while the home is beautiful, you still feel very much at home and it is easy to find a space to just curl up and read a book or play a game. The kitchen was very well stocked for our trip and easy to use. We enjoyed the fenced back yard to be able to let the kids out back and watch them easily. The games and ping pong table were a welcome distraction when we had a few cloudy days.

The location is perfect- we walked to town nearly every day and it is less than a 10 minute drive to Young State Park. We saw many deer from the kitchen table and enjoyed the birds as well.

The owner is fabulous to work with- very attentive to our questions and concerns. Our little girl left her stuffed animal and she even shipped him back!!!

Highly recommend this property and owner- you will not be disappointed!!!!

Weeklong visit

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful time at the house. Its very spacious especially the upstairs living space (if you are a single family staying there consider making the upstairs kitchen your main kitchen as the living space is bright and spacious and the decks both front and back are wonderful). Otherwise a great place for two families to share together. Location was walking distance to everything including the grocery store. One consideration, there are two circular staircase which may be awkward for elderly residents (although the first floor is very accesible). Also the barbeque was great on the back porch with seating for six. We played a mini game of wiffle ball in the backyard but then expanded our game into the two two wonderful little baseball fields out back. Garage was good for storing bikes and golf clubs. Check out the 'ye nine old holes' golf course up the road for a cheap and fun game.

Best rental in Boyne!

  • 5 of 5

I wrote a review on this same home after our first year in 2011. We've now stayed there every summer since and will be coming back next year for our 6th summer. This house is in the perfect location. When staying in Boyne City, you want to stay in town, not at the beach. The beach is a 3 minute drive around the lake (head to Young state park, or the public access down Nelson Rd.) but all the action is in town. You can walk to stroll the streets, concerts in the park, farmer's market, playgrounds for the kids, and all the restaurants. Boyne City is the perfect location for day trips to Traverse City, Charlevoix, Petoskey, and Mackinac Island. Since we started staying here in 2011 there have been many updates making the house even better. It now has central air conditioning and a fully fenced back yard (with gate latches) making it a great home for families with little kids. The multiple living spaces and kitchens make it great for large groups. The home is clean, comfortable, and well stocked to make your vacation everything you want it to be. Come to Boyne and stay in this house. You will not be disappointed.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at this charming cottage while we were visiting family in town. It's a beautiful home with the ping ping table in the basement and two kitchens. Even though it's advertised as three bedrooms the basement and attic has a bedroom as well as two on the main floor. The backyard is a good size with an enclosed fence which worked really well for my small children. There's a beautiful front porch and a huge balcony off the back. This would be a great house for two families or more to share. It's a very close walk to town and you do not need your car to get around. During the summer on Friday nights Boyne has "stroll the streets" and there's a farmers market twice a week which is very easy to walk to you. We had some common house trouble where the property Manager and homeowner were very prompt, accessible and very easy to work with to make our stay as comfortable as possible. I would definitely stay here again it's a wonderful place.
