From this convenient in-town location enjoy restful refinement while also delighting in being part of the Gloucester experience. This 2800 sq ft, easy-to-live-in home is perched above the sparkling waters of Gloucester's inner harbor. Watch the gulls soar and fishing boats return home from the comfort of your enclosed sunporch or adjacent outdoor deck, family room or spacious, fully-equipped kitchen.
Walk an easy five to ten minutes to great restaurants, our favorite whale watch boat, schooner sailing, harbor water shuttle, fun and funky shops, and maritime and art museums. In a five minute drive you can also be at Good Harbor Beach, Niles Beach, Rocky Neck Art Colony or the commuter rail to Boston.
With a peaceful décor and open floor plan guests tell us this is an especially comfortable place to call home. On the main floor all overlooking Gloucester's inner harbor are the sunroom, adjacent outdoor porch, family room and fully-equipped kitchen; plus there is a half bath, formal dining room and living room with baby grand piano.
Upstairs are three bedrooms, two full baths and laundry. The master bedroom with en suite bath overlooks the inner harbor and has a king bed, reading chairs and desk area. Your other two bedrooms will include one with a queen bed, and one with two twins. These rooms share the adjacent hall bath with double vanity sinks. All bedrooms and the family room have ceiling fans.
Enjoy wireless internet, a 55" Smart TV in the family room, assortment of DVDs, books and games, Bose Ipod player, and Bose wireless speaker to listen to your favorite music from your Ipod, phone or computer.
When you arrive, on the kitchen island you’ll find a garage door opener, extra keys, house and travel directions; a list of favorite restaurants, activities, and links to explore local events, plus brochures for fun activities around town and in Boston.
GARAGE & PARKING
The garage under the house holds two carefully parked medium-sized cars or one larger car. There is also easy, free, on-street parking. Beach and barbecue equipment are in the garage for you. (Weber grill – charcoal included; coolers, six beach chairs, boogie boards…)
RENT & RESERVATIONS
When you inquire or “Request to Book” please tell me something about yourself, what brings you to Gloucester or any special interests you may have.
*Once we both know 'this is the place for you', I will immediately reserve your dates online and send you an email confirmation and rental agreement.
Rent is $325 per night including all taxes and utilities; plus $300 refundable security deposit. Payment via CHECK is preferred. I will assume this acceptable to you unless you tell me otherwise.
If you prefer to use your credit card, you can do so securely through Homeaway / VRBO. They will add a 4 - 10% booking fee to the total rental price to support their online booking services.
If you have already entered your charge card info online, once I add your reservation your credit card will be billed 25% of the total rent, a $300 refundable security deposit, and the Homeaway/VRBO established booking fee ranging from 4 - 10% of the total rental cost. The balance of rent will be due 60 days prior to your arrival. You will receive an automated notice from Homeaway/VRBO several days before the payment is due asking you to approve the balance.
If you decide to leave the house ‘next guest ready’ (basically as clean and neat as you will find it), there is no cleaning fee. If you prefer to do only the ‘standard basics’, I will deduct $150 from your deposit. Both options are clearly outlined in the rental agreement. Whichever you prefer is fine. I will return the appropriate amount of your deposit to you credit within a few days of your departure.
In the unlikely event of your canceling or defaulting on payment fees, all pre-paid payments are the owner's property. If re-rented, I will deduct a $100 cancellation fee and return the entire balance to you.

Cape Ann is inspiring. I love the sea, huge rocks, and rugged, genuine people. Once I knew I wanted to move here, I had a dream in which I saw the exact same view we have overlooking the inner harbor, so the moment I walked into this home, I knew I was in the right place.
Especially love the entire back of the house - kitchen, family room, sunroom, outdoor porch and master bedroom. As they all overlook the inner harbor, there's a peaceful sense of being steeped in the vibrant blend of beauty and everyday life.
This home is spectacular! Lovely view, close to everything and so spacious and comfortable! We enjoyed our vacation in Gloucester and took the whale watch tour (a must see!) It was a short walk to all the fabulous restaurants and only steps away from the famous Crow's Nest where we met the locals and enjoyed the stories and history of this wonderful place! Kathy is great and we couldn't have asked for more in a vacation spot, highly recommended 😀
This house is a gem! The owner is beyond fantastic and the entire booking process through leaving was amazing. The house is perfectly located in Gloucester with an easy walk or drive to Main St. or the train to Boston. The four-season porch is amazing and a perfect way to unwind at the end of the day. Highly recommend this house for anyone staying on the Northeast coast!
This was our second time staying at Kathy's home in Gloucester. It is absolutely beautiful and totally makes us feel as if we are home! Kathy is very accommodating and always available to answer any questions or concerns. We look forward to staying there again!
My 86 year old mom takes at least one vacation with us each year. Finding a location that will work for her as well as my husband can be a challenge. She's no longer comfortable flying, she needs frequent stops if we travel more than 3 hours by car, she needs a full kitchen because she doesn't like to go to restaurants, she needs a view because she's content watching the world rather than going out into it. My husband, on the other hand, wants to be within walking distance to restaurants and wants to have an easy drive to museums or sites of interest. Although we're only three adults, we're used to space and need a place big enough to allow for privacy outside of bedrooms, and multiple bathrooms are a must.
21 Friend St was perfect. The house itself is inviting and Kathy as owner was available without being intrusive. My mom loved the sunroom and to our surprise, also enjoyed the deck. We were able to walk to restaurants - we drove only to Rockport to see the Paper House - and were close enough to Boston and Salem to be able to make a day of either without a lot of travel. But, we didn't. Instead, we chose to let go of the sight seeing agenda we arrived with and just plain relax. It's unusual for us to not make commitments, to not use vacation time to catch up on work, to not stay connected but, without a lot of back and forth that's what we decided to do in Gloucester.
Overall, we were lucky to find a very comfortable home lending itself to a very mellow vacation. And low-key Gloucester turned out to be perfect for us. We would not hesitate to return to both.
We have used Homeaway several times and this was by far the best accomodations! The beds and furniture were very comfortable and enjoyed relaxing in the sun room overlooking harbor. The owner answered several questions prior to our arrival and had a detailed written list for us regarding Wi-Fi access and places to visit. My daughter ran the Boston Marathon this year, and we needed space for six adults for a week. This home in Gloucester fit our needs perfectly.
My wife and I arrived first and found the house easily. Maneuvering our seven passenger van into the garage was accomplished easily enough. Then she and I began our visit immediately with a nap in the comfortable chaise lounges in the sun room. A FABULOUS way to recover from a day of travel.
Our son and daughter arrived soon after with their partners. There was plenty of room for us all. We spent most of our time in the family room just off the spacious kitchen. We enjoyed fires in the wood stove a couple of nights and there were intense games of Chinese Checkers played throughout the week! Occasionally the sounds of someone playing the piano would come from the living room. We made many breakfasts in the well equipped kitchen and one evening we made grilled chicken on the JennAire grill.
We made two day trips to Boston. Driving to Boston was an easy trip. Another day trip was to York Harbor, Maine with many sights to see along the way.
The rest of the week we enjoyed the area of Cape Ann. Hiking and bouldering in Dogtown was a highlight. We also enjoyed the walk out from the Gloucester lighthouse.
Treasures to bring home were purchased in the downtown shops, (an easy walk from this home). In Gloucester we enjoyed visiting the brewery, and we had excellent food at all the restaurants we visited on Cape Ann. On our last night in Gloucester we went to the Seaport Grille, just down the hill from the house. We wish we had found this restaurant sooner during our stay, because we wanted to eat there again!
We had a relaxing home to return to each day after our adventures. I can't think of anything I would change to make our experience with this owner and house better.
I will definitely seek out this home again if my travels bring me back to Gloucester. Thank you, Kathy Eckles, for a great experience.
Gloucester is the oldest working seaport and art colony in America, and prides herself on not being 'touristy'. This is also one of the top five whale watching areas in the world! There's so much to do here: charter fishing, hiking, biking, shopping, kayaking, birding (one of the top areas in the US), sunset schooner cruises, theaters, museums, live music, beautiful beaches, tours, world-class dining. Boston is only 50 minutes away by train or car.
Other Activities: kayaking, deep sea fishing, whale watching, museums, art colonies.

TURNOVER DAY: During the summer months, rentals are typically Saturday to Saturday.

RESERVATIONS: Once you decide 'this is the place for you' I will immediately reserve your dates online and email you a rental agreement to read, sign and return to me with your $300 refundable deposit and 25% of the rent within 5 days. The balance of rent is due 60 days prior to arrival. Please make all payments via PERSONAL CHECK made payable to: "Kathy Eckles".

LIABILITY & DAMAGES: You agree that the homeowner is not responsible for any accident, injury or illness that occurs to you or anyone in your party. Only guests or visitors agreed to at the time of your making the reservation are to be on the property. Any visitors are solely your responsibility. You also agree that you are solely responsible for the safekeeping of your personal belongings. In the unusual event of any damage you cause, you agree to pay for the entire repair.
CANCELLATION POLICY: In the unlikely event of a guest canceling or defaulting on payments, all pre-paid payments are the property of the owner. If re-rented, the owner will deduct a $100 cancellation fee and return the balance to the guest.
