About the property

Charming authentic French house 2 bedrooms, shady terrace, modern bathroom.

Your gite in France, Maison en Val, is set in the lovely village of Montlaur in the Aude. Montlaur is a charming traditional wine producing village nestled in the beautiful Val de Dagne just 23 minutes south east of Carcassonne and 40 minutes north west of Narbonne.

The ground floor of this superbly furnished lovely holiday house/Gite is open plan with a tiled floor, high timber beamed ceilings & French doors opening to a south facing private terrace.

The kitchen has been renovated with all modern appliances. All the original features that would be in a traditional French farmhouse kitchen such as chiminea and porcelain sink have been retained and enhanced. A large free standing island bench and an armoire filled with all the crockery & kitchen wares make this a wonderful kitchen to cook in.

For dining there is a round wooden table and chairs to sit and enjoy your meal or you can choose to dine on the terrace at an outdoor table with traditional French cafe chairs.

About Peter & Helen Stubbings

We are Australian owners of this holiday rental house, Maison En Val, in the village of Montlaur. We are both retired live between our Australian home and our lovely Maison En Val.

We look forward to meeting you soon.

Peter & Helen Stubbings

Peter & Helen Stubbings purchased this cottage in 2006

Why Peter & Helen Stubbings chose Montlaur

We fell in love with this part of France in 2004 and decided to purchase our own little piece of France in 2006. The village is not touristy and is surrounded by vineyards and the people are so friendly. When you go out for a walk you gets lots of Bonjours' even from the children.

What makes this cottage unique

If your looking for a peaceful authentic wine producing French village, located close to Cathar castles and La Cite at Carcassonne , with friendly and welcoming locals then Montlaur is the place to stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Many thanks for a wonderful week. The food, wine and markets have been all that we hoped for' Thank you Peter for your thoughtful advice throughout our stay and for sharing L'Aude with us.

Lovely house full of traditional french character

  • 5 of 5

The house is located in a friendly traditional French village, everyone seems to say 'bonjour'. The owners are very friendly, knowledgeable about the areas attractions and most welcoming. The house is very well equipped and comfortable. There is a convenient shop nearby with all basic needs open most of the day. We had a really great week. Recommended.

Terrific stay in rural Languedoc

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed staying at Peter's in Montlaur. This is to be recommended, should you wish to experience rural southern France. The house is well kept and fully equipped. Those who like to cook will be pleased with the kitchen. Very good quality in a calm and beautiful environment.

Great property - can thoroughly recommend you stay!

  • 5 of 5

We stayed as a party of four adults for a week, and can thoroughly recommend the property. Our friends were very impressed with how well equipped the house was - in particular, the kitchen came with lots of good-quality pots and pans, and plenty of crockery and glassware. There is also a nice outdoor's seating area, and all the mod-cons (dishwasher, tv, microwave etc etc). As others have mentioned, you can hear the church bells, but these were never a problem for us.

The property was very clean, and well located in the village - the village has a little convenience store, and is about 20 minutes drive to Carcassonne, where there were bigger supermarkets.

Peter was very friendly, and ensured we had a good stay, recommending local restaurants and things to see and do. He was also very quick to reply to e-mails.

All-in-all we had a great time!

Owner's Response: Helen I have stayed in many Holiday homes over the years so we have set up our Maison en Val to the same standard we expect when we are away from home, with lots of charm, comfort and most importantly cleanliness. As we also live on site, in converted stables, we are able to respond quickly to guest queries and they have told us that it is very reassuring and secure having us nearby.

perfect place for a wonderfull stay in the Aude

  • 5 of 5

Wonderfull stay in a lovely and confortable house located in a pretty and quiet village. The house is very clean, charming and well equipped and the terrace is very pleasant. The church bells ringing is absolutly not a problem. Peter is very friendly and available. We visited most of the Cathar castles, Carcassone, some beautifull abbayes and pretty villages. We went to the sea for a day (1h from Montlaur). All was perfect !

We highly recommend this home.

Thank you Peter and Helen !

Very good

  • 5 of 5

We are a family of 4, with a small baby of only 10 months, and we stayed here for a week. The location inside Montlaur is perfect, very near the church. The bells are on through the night, but the windows are really good and there is no problem sleeping. The house was very clean and there were a lot of informations about the region, including a pass to get a reduction on some entry fees.

Peter was wery kind, helping us with anything we needed to make the stay even more confortable (including a very good advise about wines). I recommend the house for those who want to spend some time in a very quiet and peaceful village surrounded by vineyards. And I also recommend it for more active people for its great location. From here we visited Carcassonne, Narbonne, Sigéan, the grutes of Cabrespine and Limousis and many other great places.

Owner's Response: The people of Montlaur have maintained many of the traditions of their lovely wine producing village and the bells are a wonderful example. To provide our guests with greater comfort we have installed double glazed windows which, as you see from this review, provide a great level of comfort.

Charming house and wonderful stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband, daughter, our dog, and I had a wonderful one-week holiday at this charming village house. The two-story house is very cozy, charming, and well-equipped. The house's private terrace facing the church is a delightful place to enjoy a glass of local wine at the end of the day. Great nights sleeping with the fresh air, really comfortable beds, and stillness -even enjoyed the church bells ringing in the night! Peter is a very kind and considerate host who made our stay even more enjoyable. The small town has a weekly market with fresh, local produce and the valley has interesting villages to explore. The nearby village of Lagrasse is beautiful - a wonderful brocante and a swim in the river are not to be missed. We had two great meals at La Marbrerie in Caunes-Minervois. All food is homemade and the cassoulet and french fries are the best we have ever tasted! Our week long stay was quietly marvelous and wonderfully relaxing. We highly recommend this charming house and village.
