Overview

About the property

A beautiful one bedroomed cottage, full of character, by a wild stream.

Set in the South Hams, an area of outstanding natural beauty, Fingals Folly is in a truly romantic valley setting amongst lush gardens.

The indoor swimming pool is heated and surrounded by exotic plants and has doors to a sauna and a gym. You are welcome to wander in the luscious and colourful gardens, play croquet on the lawn, play tennis on the immaculate grass tennis court (only useable in the summer months of course) and use the Games room with snooker, table football and ping pong on the terrace outside.

Fingals is a mile away from Dittisham, a beautiful village sited on the edge of the River Dart. There are many popular National Trust spots right on our doorstep, including Greenway House, Agatha Christie's recently restored summer house and gardens are just across the river, Coleton Fishacre (a spectacular house and garden designed by Milne (a disciple of Lutyens) in 1925 for Rupert and Lady Dorothy D'Oyly Carte (of Gilbert and Sullivan fame). There are also many delights a short drive away including the renowned Devon beaches, the Sharpham Estate (a huge Grade 2 listed house with beautiful gardens offering courses of different kinds, tours of the vineyard, fabulous food in the Cafe and panoramic views of the river right up to Totnes). Dartington Hall and Gardens (another beautiful Grade 2 listed house with an extraordinary history offering many different courses) and Dartmoor National Park. Below we have listed a selection of some of our favourite things to do locally.

The River Dart for sailing, canoeing and ferries.

We are 6 miles from Dartmouth and Totnes - for wonderful shopping and markets - and near the coast for exploring, swimming and walking.

The South West Coast Path (a short drive away) is England's longest waymarked long-distance footpath and a National Trail and the Dart Valley Trail goes right past out door and is one of the area's truly great walks. This daylong ramble follows the wooded banks of the broad and beautiful river Dart, on a route crammed with gems and jewels of human and natural history.

A stay at Fingals offers you a true break in a different time and will re-charge your batteries and re-light that twinkle in your eye.

About Sheila Johnston

I love living in this beautiful place with my animals all around me - I have two lurchers, three pygmy goats, six Indian Runner ducks and a flock of white doves who fly overhead at all times. My favourite things to do when I'm not at home gardening are to get out into the countryside with my dogs or onto the River Dart in our boat - picnics on the shore are just special.

Sheila Johnston purchased this cottage in 1980

Why Sheila Johnston chose Dartmouth

A luxury self-catering Folly with shared facilities offering peace and harmony for families, country lovers and... lovers ... perfect for honeymooners and couples who like to get away from it all, enjoy visiting National Trust properties, walking on the Coastal Paths, eating, sailing, swimming, playing golf and tennis. A perfect holiday ...

What makes this cottage unique

Fingals is an unusual property, remote and tucked down narrow Devon lanes, but close to Totnes, Dittisham and Dartmouth. I simply fell in love with the position of this place and the extraordinary surrounding countryside and I am lucky enough to call it my home.

Fingals is set in a Devon Valley with lush, colourful gardens, a grass tennis court, croquet lawn, swimming pool, sauna and gym - all of which are free to use by our guests. There is an honesty bar, open all the time, plus a restaurant which serves meals twice a week. A delightful walk of just one mile will take you past Dittisham Mill Creek and the River Dart to the pretty village of Dittisham which has two pubs (one of which houses the village shop and post office), a fantastic waterside cafe and a ferry across to Greenway, holiday home to Agatha Christie now owned by the National Trust. There are other lovely Trust properties close by - Coleton Fishacre at Kingswear, Overbecks at Salcombe, Saltram House at Plymouth and others a short drive away. The River Dart offers all kinds of possibilities for adventures - from crabbing on the village pontoon to endless boat trips, sailing lessons, paddle boarding, kayaking or just pottering. Our closest stretch of the South West Coast Path is stunning - secluded coves and rock pooling beaches, panoramic clifftop views - it can be quite strenuous but there will be a glorious cafe or pub somewhere along your route for a little libation or refreshment. There are two steam trains, a zoo, wildlife park and hundreds of acres of Dartmoor to explore. It can be very quiet here out of season when only the birds and wildlife will entertain you, but if you prefer a more lively time then come when the Dartmouth Music/Comedy/Food Festivals or Regatta are taking place. There really is something for everyone. The only thing we can't provide is a mobile phone signal but there is free wifi and landline phones in all bedrooms. If there is anything else you would like to know please call us - we'd love to help and to see you here at Fingals for a holiday.
