About Tom Watkins

I am working for an NGO that requires I spend time in Geneva, so am often out of New York.

Tom Watkins purchased this apartment in 1982

Why Tom Watkins chose Manhattan

Because it is in a great location from which the city's attractions are easily accessible -- steps off FifthAvenue between Flatiron, just to the south; Murray Hill, a block to the east; and Midtown, whose southern tip begins four blocks to the north. It's in the center of the Persian rug district, two blocks south of Korea Town and four blocks north of Madison Square Park.

What makes this apartment unique

A clean, quiet, calm, orderly and safe place of refuge that is within walking distance of many of New York's attractions.

Great night in Midtown Manhattan

  • 5 of 5

Despite a glitch in our reservation (the apartment had some plumbing issues), Tom got us into a larger apartment in the same building without any problem. It even had an outdoor roof sitting area. The apartment was as advertised - clean and well equipped. We had everything we needed. It was walking distance to everywhere we wanted to go but by the end we succumbed to fatigue and took the subway which was very close by. It was great to have coffee/tea right there in the a.m. and there were numerous options nearby for excellent food. The bed was comfortable, the kitchen well equipped (although we didn't use it). We would definitely stay here again.

Great -- just what we needed

  • 5 of 5

It was such a delight to stay in Tom's apartment. Tom was a perfect host in absentia -- accessible and helpful by phone and email. The apartment is spacious, well furnished and equipped, and clean. The bed is terrific -- great mattress, good-sized queen, very nice linens. We enjoyed having a well-equipped kitchen for breakfasts and some other meals at home, plus a dining table for two. We appreciated having nice quality towels and plenty of them, plus plenty of paper products -- paper towels, tissues, toilet tissue. It was like staying at a friend's apartment -- a friend who is clean and tidy and well-organized and has good taste in art. The location was absolutely perfect for us -- close to the subway and easy to get around. Not overly touristy or crowded, but pleasant and safe and lots of amenities nearby. The stairs are safe and not too steep, and there is a good handrail. And the climb got easier as the week went by! And being up higher made for more light and quiet. And there's a skylight in the bathroom for extra light during the day. There were construction sounds during the day (June 2017), but it was quiet at night. This was our first visit to NYC, and we hope to stay there again when we are in the city.

Comfortable and Convenient

  • 5 of 5

A comfortable apartment in a very central and convenient location. Easy access to subway, buses, etc. The property is well maintained, and had everything needed during our one week stay.

Host was very responsive and provided clear and detailed information on arrival arrangements and on how things worked. His suggestions on places to shop, eat, etc. were most helpful.

As noted by other recent guests, there is significant weekday daytime noise from a building under construction next door, but we knew of this before booking and it was not a problem for us.

Midtown Manhattan apartment

  • 3 of 5

The apartment was quite clean and comfortable. However heat had been turned off and it was very cold. We had to request a heater be delivered. The dishwasher was out of order so had to wash everything by hand. Because of the major construction going on all around the apartment, it was extremely noisy and loud. The location was excellent and the owner was quite communicative regarding our needs.

Owner's Response: Guilty on both counts: -- The building heat had been turned off by late April and the electric space heater that is stored in a closet in the apartment for just such occasions was not working. Within a couple of hours after our Arizona guests complained that they were cold, a new space heater had been delivered. I am sorry they had to endure the discomfort. -- Their comment about the noise is a fair one, but should not have been a surprise, since the description of the property notes that there is construction on the block. The workers begin at 7 a.m. and continue until late afternoon. The work does not extend into the evenings or nights.

Perfect retreat from the New York hustle and bustle

  • 5 of 5

This apartment was clean and spacious and provided everything two busy moms needed for a relaxing retreat. The room was easily 3 times bigger than the room we stayed in at the Marriott last time we were in New York. The mattress was incredibly comfortable. The kitchen was well stocked with everything we would have needed to cook if we had wanted to. The owner provided a wide variety of recommendations for food and shopping near the apartment. He was quick to respond to phone, text, and emails.
